Chapter 49 Gunshots...
With all the fieldwork done by Ren Qingsong, Miya, having nothing else to do, couldn't help but think of going back to the place where she had collected ramie last time to look for newly grown ramie.
For some reason, she always felt restless when she was idle.
Having made up her mind, Miya immediately told Ren Qingsong about her decision.
Ren Qingsong, however, was thinking of something else. “Are you short of fabric at home? I have some fabric coupons that were just issued. Miya, if you like, go and buy some more.”
Upon hearing this, Miya raised her hands and waved them in refusal, "No...no, I was just thinking that if they grow and aren't harvested, wouldn't they all be wasted?"
Upon hearing this, Ren Qingsong couldn't bring himself to say anything to stop them; the concept of thrift was ingrained in the very bones of people at that time.
However, it was too dangerous for Miya to go up the mountain alone, so he couldn't agree to it.
“If you want to go, I’ll go with you next time you take a vacation. We can go hunting in the mountains, and we’re almost done with the preserved chicken and dried rabbit at home.”
"Thank you, Third Brother!"
Both of them are decisive people, and once they make a decision, they will definitely do it.
When the appointed time arrived, the two got up early and headed towards their location on the mountain.
Miya had gone there with her mother before, and her mother led the way. Before they had gone far, the sharp-eyed Ren Qingsong spotted the prey's trail.
"etc!"
Suddenly, a hand blocked Mia's path. She looked in the direction of the hand with a puzzled expression, and listened intently, vaguely hearing the sounds of other creatures.
Before she could figure it out, Ren Qingsong had already given the answer, "Don't worry, it's just a pheasant."
Having said that, he extended the slingshot in his hand and aimed at the target.
Ren Qingsong strode forward, and a brightly colored pheasant appeared in front of him.
After saying "Continue," the two continued walking forward.
This was the first time Miya had clearly seen Ren Qingsong hunting, and she couldn't help but admire him even more, making her steps more steady.
After walking for almost two hours, we finally arrived at our destination.
Ren Qingsong checked the surrounding environment and confirmed that there were no large animal tracks. "Miya, you cut ramie here. I'll check this hilltop for other prey. If there's any danger, shout and I'll appear immediately."
"Third brother, you go ahead. I can manage on my own. Last time I came with Mother, nothing happened."
Miya smiled sweetly and waved goodbye.
She then squatted down, grabbed a handful of ramie with one hand, and swiftly swung the sickle close to the ground with the other, causing the ramie, which was almost as tall as her, to fall to the ground.
Once he started working, he became completely absorbed in it. After confirming that there were no obstacles around him, Ren Qingsong turned around and went up the mountain.
Looking at the lush ramie bushes, Miya became more and more energetic as she worked, her body seemingly filled with endless power.
In addition, she was so focused on observing the ramie roots under her feet that she didn't pay attention to the path she was harvesting. Before she knew it, she had cut right through the dense ramie clump again.
Noticing the different light in front of her, Miya quickly raised her head, her eyes dazzled by the bright light.
In the dim light, she seemed to see a figure on the opposite mountain.
Once my eyes recovered, I looked closely and found nothing there.
Miya thought she was seeing things, shook her head, and continued with her work as if nothing had happened.
Amidst her busy schedule, she even managed to grab a cornbread she had brought.
Then they continued working, and most of the once lush ramie bushes collapsed.
Suddenly, a sound like thunder exploded on the mountain, "Crack!"
Miya was startled by the sudden sound and fell to the ground with a thud, looking in a daze in the direction from which the sound came.
If she wasn't mistaken, it was the sound of gunfire.
That was the direction Ren Qingsong had just come up the mountain. For a fleeting moment, all sorts of unpleasant thoughts flashed through her mind.
She wasn't the only one frightened; other "creatures" in the mountains were also startled.
In the chaos, the concealed figure was exposed.
Miya gripped the ground with both hands, pushed off with all her might, and her legs moved incredibly fast as she ran towards the place where Ren Qingsong had just climbed the mountain.
Before she even reached the foot of the mountain, Ren Qingsong, covered in weeds and fallen leaves and looking rather disheveled, suddenly appeared before her.
Miya sped up again, looking at the other person with a nervous expression, "Third Brother, what's wrong? Did you hear me...?"
"Don't be afraid, I just encountered a wild boar and had to use a gun."
Hearing that Ren Qingsong had fired the gun himself, Miya finally felt relieved and her tense gaze involuntarily turned to look behind Ren Qingsong.
A family of wild boars strung together by hemp rope suddenly appeared before our eyes.
Just one glance made Miya swallow hard in fear; she couldn't imagine how terrifying it must be for Third Brother to face alone.
"Third brother, you..."
Before Miya could finish speaking, Ren Qingsong interrupted her.
"It's getting late. I think we have enough ramie. Let's go back and deal with the wild boar."
“Okay,” Miya nodded subconsciously in agreement.
By the time she came to her senses, she was already carrying the ramie bundles over her head and heading towards home.
Ren Qingsong, standing beside him, was working even harder, dragging a wild boar in his hand and carrying a load of ramie on his back.
Perhaps the gunshots had attracted too much attention, because just half an hour later, the two encountered soldiers who had come to investigate.
"Battalion Commander Ren, you're amazing!"
When the squad saw the wild boar family in Ren Qingsong's hands, they grinned from ear to ear, their minds filled with images of feasting on the meat.
"Come on, we'll take care of you. Battalion Commander Ren, you can rest."
"Girl, just give me the stuff."
"Battalion Commander Ren, were you the one who fired that shot just now?"
Upon hearing this, Ren Qingsong nodded, "That's right. I didn't originally want to use a gun, but the wild boar came on strong, so I had to fire one shot for the time being. I will report back to Commander Zhou when I get back."
The soldiers nodded and excitedly dragged the wild boar back.
With their help, Miya's journey was much easier, and the time it took her to get home was about the same as the time it took to get there.
Upon arriving at her own hilltop, Miya had someone place the ramie by the pond, preparing to soak it in water for a while.
Ren Qingsong led the soldiers to transport the wild boar back to the mess hall.
The sight of the group carrying wild boars was seen by the residents of the family compound, their eyes filled with undisguised joy.
"With so many wild boars, it looks like the cafeteria will have plenty of meat to eat!"
"Wow! It's Battalion Commander Ren again. He's really something!"
"Quick, quick! Grab a bowl and follow along, you might be able to catch some pig's blood."
...
The lively scene stretched from the family compound all the way to the bustling canteen. The head chef of the canteen saw the wild boar as if he had seen a relative. He waved his hand and told the soldiers to clean up the wild boar before going back, in exchange for eating more meat.
But he still had to explain the gun issue to Commander Zhou, so leaving early was at least the official reason given to everyone.
