Chapter 6 Borrowing Salt...
The words had barely left his mouth when he stepped out the door, and he heard his son's joyful shout:
"Big Sister Ya!"
Upon hearing this, Liu Limei looked up and saw that it was indeed Miya, whom she had met at the train station.
She quickly approached Miya, and as she passed her son, she slapped him on the head, demanding, "How dare you call me 'Big Sister'? Call me 'Sister Miya'!"
The eldest child's head suddenly fell forward, causing his body to stagger a few steps.
Da Wa looked up at her mother's retreating figure with a helpless expression, muttering unhappily, "It's not like I called her that on purpose, Da Ya Jie is Da Ya Jie."
Ignoring her son's complaints, Liu Limei quickly opened the courtyard gate and looked at Miya with a smile on her face.
"Miya, what brings you here? Come in!"
"Although the military logistics department built the house very well, there were still many things to deal with on the first day of moving in, and it was a mess. Only Da Ni and Er Ni were able to help out."
The eldest child immediately objected, "Mom, I can help too."
"Go away!" Liu Limei waved her hand dismissively. "It's good that you're not causing trouble."
"Miya, have some water."
Just then, Da Ni appeared in the yard carrying a bowl of water, her smile gentle, her demeanor very similar to Mi Ya's.
That's why Liu Limei and her family spotted Chen Yin at the train station. When they asked, they found out they were going to the same place, so they immediately agreed to go together.
On the way, Da Ni and Mi Ya spent the most time together. When Da Ni heard the noise in the yard, she immediately turned around to get water.
"Thank you." Miya gratefully took the water and drank a small sip.
Remembering what Miya had said when they were traveling together, Liu Limei asked anxiously, "Miya, have you found the person?"
Miya nodded emphatically, recalling the tall and upright figure of the current Qingsong in her mind, "I found... Third Brother."
"So you came here to see your brother."
Liu Limei couldn't hide the surprise on her face. She thought Miya had come to the military camp to find her fiancé. Otherwise, she really couldn't understand why Miya always spoke in such a vague way.
Coupled with Miya's shy and timid eyes, she perfectly embodies the image of a young girl experiencing her first love.
Now it seems she misunderstood.
"Now that we've found your brother, you'll probably be staying in the military for a long time too. Where are the houses you've been assigned?"
Liu Limei's curious gaze swept back and forth among the houses nestled in the mountains, as if trying to get a clear look at where Miya lived.
Even Da Ni, who is usually not very emotional, showed a happy smile and said excitedly, "From now on, we can work together as companions."
Miya nodded emphatically when she met Da Ni's joyful gaze, and pointed towards the mountaintop, "My third brother and I live on the mountaintop, and we're the only family here."
The group looked in the direction she was pointing and saw only a few exposed wooden skeletons.
The children, both young and old, didn't know what "damaged" meant. They excitedly surveyed the height of the mountaintop, exclaiming in amazement.
"Sister Miya, you live so high up!"
"Mother, I also want to live high up, with everyone else living at my feet, so that those... mmm..."
Liu Limei immediately covered her son's mouth to stop him from saying anything more foolish.
These days, who would want to live on a mountaintop unless absolutely necessary?
Not only is climbing up and down tiring, but water sources are also hard to find. Otherwise, why would the families who moved into the family compound be allocated houses according to their military rank and position?
Her husband, Lao Zhou, is the head of the regiment, which is why they managed to live in a corner at the foot of the mountain, right next to a stream, making it very convenient for washing clothes and cooking.
Liu Limei forced an awkward smile, inwardly cursing: "Damn kid, he's always causing me trouble."
"Living in the mountains is quieter; there are too many people and too much trouble."
Miya agreed wholeheartedly, saying that when she passed by other people's houses at the foot of the mountain, she heard sounds of fighting and cursing coming from many of them.
Even though Miya thought she was used to it, she still couldn't help but feel a shiver run down her spine.
Liu Limei met Miya's sparkling eyes, changed the subject, and stopped talking about the awkward topic from before.
"By the way, Miya, did you come to visit Dani?"
"No...no no no!"
Miya frantically waved her hands, causing the eggs hidden in her pocket to shake and make a crisp clinking sound.
Everyone looked at Miya's pocket with suspicion. She quickly covered the shaking pocket, took out two eggs, stretched out her hands, and placed them in front of Liu Limei and the other two.
Upon seeing the eggs, the eldest child's eyes lit up instantly, his mouth watered, and he almost licked his lips until they were smooth.
The little boy stared longingly at the egg, then quickly turned to his mother, begging to have a taste.
Suddenly, a burning gaze fell upon Liu Limei. Suppressing the flutter in her heart, she frowned and said:
"Miya, what are you doing?"
"Sister-in-law, I'd like to trade you some salt so I can make a pot of wild vegetable and egg soup. Are two enough? I have some more in my pocket."
Seeing that Miya was about to pull her hand back and continue taking out the remaining items from her pocket, Liu Limei immediately spoke up to stop her.
"No need, no need, it's just a little salt. We brought everything with us from home, and we still have some salt left."
"Da Ni, go and get some salt."
Upon hearing the order, Dani turned and walked towards the main room where kitchen utensils were stored, intending to fetch salt for Miya.
Miya quickly followed, stuffing the two eggs in her hand into Da Ni's arms, and then quickly letting go after confirming it was safe.
Dani caught the egg off guard, feeling a burning sensation in her palm, and looked at her mother helplessly.
"Mother...this..."
"Why are you being so polite, Miya?" Liu Limei looked at Miya with disapproval.
She could tell at a glance that Miya was holding wild eggs. Based on her observations along the way, she knew that Miya's family was not well-off and didn't even have a thick cotton coat.
Therefore, the wild eggs that Miya gave them must have been found by herself during the time they were separated.
Even if she was tempted, Liu Limei would never take away a child's food.
Just as she was about to return the eggs to her daughter, she saw Miya with a smug smile, holding four identical wild eggs in her hand.
"Sister-in-law, look! I have more."
"I've only ever collected bird eggs in the village before, Sister Miya, you've collected so many eggs at once! Please teach me! Teach me!"
Liu Limei felt irritated by the chattering around her and once again used her "silencing technique".
Are wild animals so easy to find? If you encounter a wild boar or a wolf, it will be too late to regret it.
Miya noticed the fear in her sister-in-law's eyes and quickly stuffed the eggs back into her pocket.
"So sister-in-law, just give me a little bit of salt. My brother's comrades up in the mountains helped repair the house, and I want to cook a bowl of hot soup for everyone."
Upon hearing this, Liu Limei stopped refusing and instructed Da Ni to fetch some salt and wrap it in paper.
Miya accepted the gift with a smile, expressed her gratitude again, and turned to leave.
When Da Wa heard that Sister Miya was going to climb to the top of the mountain to make something delicious, he couldn't control his legs under the double temptation and followed Miya's footsteps out, which made Liu Limei's heart burn with anger.
The drawn-out syllable jolted the eldest child's nerves, startling him.
But considering the height of the mountaintop and the boredom at home, the eldest son tried hard to suppress the fear his mother felt when she called his full name, and innocently said:
"I want to go to the mountaintop with Sister Miya."
Hearing this, Miya turned around and looked back, meeting Da Wa's pitiful yet expectant eyes. A thought struck her, and she continued to persuade him:
"Don't worry, sister-in-law, I'll take good care of Da Wa. My third brother and other soldiers are up there too, nothing will happen."
"Yes, yes! I'll go take a look. It's the first time I've ever seen such a high mountain."
Miya's words dispelled the fear in Da Wa's heart, and he jumped up and down excitedly, his eyes filled with longing for the mountains.
Liu Limei glanced at the dust kicked up by her son's bounding footsteps, closed her eyes in annoyance, and waved her hand, "Go away! Remember to come back for dinner tonight."
Da Wa's joyful shouts echoed through the sky as he excitedly ran ahead of Mi Ya, babbling incoherently and making a jarring, noisy noise that made Liu Limei and her daughter cover their foreheads and shake their heads.
Miya watched as the big kid was about to run out of sight, and quickly followed, suddenly remembering the military overcoat she had borrowed.
"Sister-in-law, I've washed the clothes you borrowed and will return them right away."
He hurriedly tossed out a sentence and shouted at the top of his lungs toward the older boy in front of him, "Big boy, slow down, be careful not to bump into people!"
A note from the author:
I feel like midnight is a lucky time for me, so I'll update at midnight for now.
