Chapter 57 The Human World (2) What exactly is the relationship between you three...?
"Why didn't you kill her?!"
As soon as those words were uttered, Xia Ying was shocked and then plunged into a long period of reading comprehension.
Why wasn't he killed? In other words, he should have been killed.
But why does Fenrir feel he deserves to die? Is it because he hates himself?
Xia Ying dismissed the idea with skepticism.
It shouldn't be that bad. He has always had a high opinion of me, and he has helped me out in times of trouble many times.
...Is it possible that he wasn't targeting "Xia Ying" as a person, but rather the human species?
Xia Ying suddenly had a flash of inspiration: That's very possible!
However, racial discrimination is absolutely unacceptable! There are good people among us too!
Xia Ying thought she had sorted out her thoughts, cleared her throat, and was ready to offer some explanations for her species, but Cerberus spoke first.
"Even now, do you still think I'm the same killing machine I used to be? Stop deceiving yourself, Fenrir," Cerberus sneered. "I'm not the same person I used to be. The only one who hasn't improved is yourself. Stop treating me like one of your own!"
"What right do you have to change things?" Cerberus's words provoked Fenrir's anger even more intensely. Uncontrolled magical particles gathered around him, forming clusters of frost crystals. "The reason Mother chose you was precisely because you are cruel and powerful enough!!"
The frost crystals changed shape drastically, condensing into sharp ice spikes. Fenrir's hatred was as sharp as those ice spikes, and before the hostility could materialize into tangible killing intent, Xia Ying grasped Fenrir's hand.
"The reason we didn't kill him was because Cer'er couldn't do it at first."
Xia Ying answered the other party's initial question earnestly.
She turned to Cerberus beside her and asked directly, "What were you thinking about it later?"
"Huh? Huh?!" Cerberus, suddenly being called out, panicked for a second, then tried to cover it up, saying, "Without you, there would be a lot of trouble, right? Like, no one would help me with online shopping, no one would pay the utility bills on time, and no one would eat the meals I cook... In short, it would be a lot of trouble! So I suddenly forgot about it!"
Xia Ying couldn't help but chuckle at his attempt to argue, which provoked Cerberus to shout angrily, "Don't laugh! Don't disbelieve me!"
"Alright, alright, I don't disbelieve you." Xia Ying put away her smile and pretended to be serious. "In short, after careful consideration, we decided that it would be better to spare my life, so we have been living peacefully together ever since."
After she finished speaking, she still held Fenrir's hand, looked at him tenderly, and asked, "Are you willing to accept this answer, Fenrir?"
Fenrir slowly calmed down from his rage. He began to realize what he had said, and his body stiffened slightly: "I didn't..."
“I know your hostility isn’t directed at me,” Xia Ying said. “I don’t know what happened between you and Ker, and I’m not qualified to judge right or wrong, but at least before we return to Cocytus, please try not to make a move, okay?”
Fenrir hesitated for a moment, a glint of light flickering in her eyes, and asked softly, "Aren't you angry?"
“I’m not angry because Fenrir is Fenrir.” She patted his head like she would a restless puppy. “It’s also my responsibility that you were brought here. I will take good care of you.”
"Hmph." Cerberus snorted in dissatisfaction. "I'm not going to cook for this guy."
Fenrir coldly turned his face away: "I won't eat it."
"Huh? What a tasteless piece of trash?!"
Although the two dogs were still bickering, they finally got through the demolition crisis, and Xia Ying breathed a slight sigh of relief. Then she heard her phone ring.
It wasn't the notification sound from the "Student Handbook," but rather Xia Ying's phone ringtone before she entered Cocytus.
Xia Ying rummaged through the house and found her ordinary cell phone, which she had packed away in a drawer before leaving. To her surprise, she discovered that it still had a little bit of battery left.
The caller ID showed the name as my cousin, Xu Lu.
Xia Ying felt a chill run down her spine and quickly turned to the two dogs, making a "shh" gesture. Cerberus asked sharply, "What's wrong? Whose call was that?"
Xia Ying said nervously, "It's Sister Lulu."
Cerberus immediately shut his mouth, his expression also becoming serious.
The house fell silent instantly. Xia Ying took a couple of seconds to prepare herself before answering the phone, saying in a nonchalant, sunny voice, "Hello, Sister Lulu..."
"I called you more than a dozen times, why didn't you answer? Xia Ying, where did you go?!" Xu Lu asked abruptly. "I even went to your school. What does it mean that the department said you took a leave of absence?"
"Hey Lulu, stop yelling, stop yelling." Xia Ying moved her phone away slightly, her mind racing. "I'm staying home quietly right now, let me explain slowly..."
The person on the other end of the phone said, "Explain it to me in person."
Xia Ying was shocked: "Huh?"
"I'll be at your door soon, open it in a bit." After saying that last sentence, Xu Lu hung up the phone quite decisively.
Xia Ying stared blankly at her phone, muttering, "Oh no, Lulu's coming over."
The phone finally ran out of battery during the call, and as the screen went black, Xia Ying jumped up from the sofa and quickly got to work.
“We’ll think of an excuse later. You two can’t just stay here like this.” She gasped. “If people think we’re living with some unknown man, Lulu will kill us all.”
Fenrir stood up, his expression hardening: "Then I'll kill her for you first..."
"No, no, no, this is just a description!" Xia Ying quickly grabbed Fenrir. "I'll explain later. Can you and Cerberus transform into small dogs first? Don't make them too big. We don't have any dogs taller than the ceiling here."
Suddenly, a rapid knocking sounded at the door, followed by Xu Lu's hurried shouts: "Xia Ying, open the door!"
Xia Ying turned her head and responded, roughly gesturing to indicate the size: "It's good if it becomes this big. Change it right now. I'll go open the door first."
She walked to the door, and behind her came a slight sound of transformation magic, followed by a dog's loud barking.
Xia Ying felt a little relieved and opened the door. Ms. Xu Lu, a white-collar worker in a business suit, was slightly out of breath, looking like she had run all the way here.
Only when she actually saw Xia Ying's face did Xu Lu breathe a sigh of relief and pull her into her arms: "Where did you go? I almost called the police!"
Xia Ying lowered her head, beginning to feel a little guilty: "I..."
"Sit down and tell me."
Xu Lu let go of her and walked into the living room first, then suddenly stopped.
Xia Ying closed the door and walked towards her, puzzled. Then, she too froze at the sight in the living room.
There were indeed dogs in the living room, but only a small black dog. A handsome man with silver hair and blue eyes was still standing in the same spot, bearing the marks of his struggle with the small black dog.
"Xia Ying," Fenrir said with a somewhat helpless look, "can't turn back."
The bag in Xu Lu's hand fell to the ground with a "thud," and the sound of an impending storm rang out.
"Who is this man, Xia Ying?"
####
"We're friends."
Thus, the situation became one where Xia Ying and Fenrir stood side by side, facing Xu Lu's interrogation together.
"Is it necessary to bring friends you meet while traveling home?" Xu Lu looked at the two of them suspiciously. "Are you just after Xia Ying's good looks?"
Xia Ying protested, "No way! When have I ever been that kind of person!"
"So, what's your friend's name?"
Fenrir.
“Oh, Fenrir.” Xu Lu turned to Frostwolf. “Is the situation consistent with what my sister said? Are you friends with her?”
Fenrir replied calmly, "Yes, I love Xia Ying."
Xu Lu exclaimed in surprise, "Ah?!"
Xia Ying shouted, "That's not what Fenrir meant! He's a foreigner and doesn't understand Chinese!!"
The little black dog barked wildly, "Woof woof woof woof woof woof!!!"
A loud bark drowned out all other sounds, interrupting Xu Lu, who had to cover her ears: "Why is Ker'er so agitated today?"
"Maybe I'm just excited because I haven't seen you in so long, haha." Xia Ying took the opportunity to pick up the puppy with one hand and drag Fenrir with the other towards the inner room. "Let's take Ker to the bedroom first, and we'll talk later."
After entering the bedroom, she immediately closed the door.
"What exactly happened?" Xia Ying lowered her voice, facing the person and the dog. "Why can't Fenrir turn back?"
The demon hound angrily pointed at Fenrir: "Why is Fenrir the only one who can be human?! And he said those things! What if Xu Lu thinks he's your boyfriend?!"
"Isn't that because Fenrir can't turn back? And I've been explaining this to Lulu all along!" Xia Ying was equally exasperated. "What are you getting angry about, Cerberus?!"
"Can't I even get angry?" Cerberus immediately brought up old grievances, "Xu Lu comes several times a year, and every time I'm turned into a dog! Compared to Fenrir, I'm clearly more like your boyfriend... boyfriend..."
Cerberus suddenly fell silent, his ears turning red.
In the midst of what resembled a couple arguing, Fenrir suddenly asked, "Does 'boyfriend' mean 'partner'?"
Caught off guard by the question, Xia Ying instinctively replied, "Hmm? More or less."
Fenrir's icy face blossomed into a gentle smile, like spring snow, and she reached out to embrace Xia Ying from behind, softly saying, "I'm so happy."
"..."
Cerberus flew into a rage and snatched Xia Ying back into his arms.
"Don't even think about it!"
The situation descended into chaos once more, and in the midst of the scuffle, Xia Ying failed to notice that the bedroom door had been pushed open.
"...And who is this man?!"
Xu Lu's voice boomed out of nowhere, and Xia Ying turned her head to meet her cousin's incredulous expression.
"What exactly is the relationship between the three of you?!"
