Chapter 6: Waves, Waves
How can someone dress like a tropical fruit and still be cute?
Zhuo Manyi couldn't help but think so after seeing Xia Cun.
Xia Cun always seemed to dress strangely. Just like she always carried a colorful bag, her clothes were always colorful. They looked ugly, but on her, they looked strangely pure, as if they were full of life.
What a strange guy.
"Are you going to leave or not, Miss Zhuo?" Zhou Yun stuck his head out of the car.
Zhuo Manyi then walked across the garden holding an umbrella and got into the car.
Xia Cun also got into the black Alpha again and headed to the beach.
The waves were good, and the boys were bobbing on the crests, but she was like a stone, sitting on the beach.
She kept adjusting the focus, pressing the shutter button again and again, but all she captured was a blurry blue wave. So she switched to photography mode, watching the waves rise, watching the crest of the waves lift up the beautiful boy, as if carrying him to a vast, empty world...
Xia Cun found that Jiang Song's hair was glowing, but after a moment, she found that it was his ear bone stud that was shining.
She knew he had pierced ears, only in his left ear, and that he would occasionally wear an earring that made him look unruly and wild from the left side, a far cry from his sheep-like docility.
Suddenly, Jiang Song looked at her from the vast sea, like waves surging into his heart. The camera shook in her hand and turned to the beach covered with white foam.
She turned off the camera, and suddenly a voice came from the side: "Are you secretly filming Jiang Song?"
Turning around, Miao Wen appeared holding a coconut.
Xia Cun tilted his head back, blinked, and asked instead of answering, "Do you like blue glasses?"
It seemed like a nonsensical question, but she was asking Miao Wen.
The girl's eyes flashed with surprise. She immediately sat down on the beach and asked her, "How did you know? Do you like her too?"
Xia Cun nodded, answering her second question. "Blue Glasses" was Xia Lan's stage name, inspired by her name, her love for the color blue, and her severe myopia, which made her inseparable from glasses.
Then he answered Miao Wen's first question: "I saw you in the library. You were reading her comics."
"Oh! That's quite a coincidence!" Miao Wen changed her quiet appearance, unable to contain her excitement at meeting a fellow enthusiast, and asked, "Which work do you like best?"
Xia Cun almost blurted out: "A Cat's Fantastic Journey."
"A debut work!" Miao Wen thought for a moment and said, "So you like cute pets. But did you know that Lan Dahua used her niece as a reference when she drew this one?"
Xia Cun nodded again——
Xia Lan became Xia Cun's guardian when she was eight. She always referred to Xia Cun as "niece," not "niece-in-law." This term was often questioned, and her explanation at the time was a rhetorical question: "Why should I call my sister's daughter niece? Who am I being so rude to?" It wasn't until the past two years that Xia Lan adopted a more profound and powerful term: "What niece? It's simply a product of patriarchal language. Forget it."
"Great, then you must be a real fan!"
Miao Wen hastily concluded, "I only discovered this through archaeological excavations."
"A Cat's Fantasy Journey" was created by Blue Glasses eight years ago when she was still a college student. Unexpectedly, it became popular as soon as it was published because of its surprisingly cute plot and style, and finally got the opportunity to be published.
The publishing house had a short interview with this rising star in the comics world. Blue Glasses mentioned that the inspiration for her to create this comic was the disappearance of her niece. After she found the silly child, she was furious and created a cat model. It can be said that she embarked on the road of comics in order to earn money for milk powder for her child. Of course, the child had been weaned long ago at that time.
Therefore, Miao Wen believes that a girl of sixteen or seventeen who knows about this "old story" must be a true fan.
She grew increasingly excited, holding her coconut juice as a decoration, and continued to chatter non-stop, "My favorite is her martial arts girls' comic. I've read it over and over again, like eight hundred times! It's a shame it's so short, and there's never been a sequel. I also brought this set of paper comics this time! Have you read it?"
"Um."
Miao Wen: “…”
What a bland reaction!
"Aren't you going to praise me?"
“Very cute.”
Miao Wen immediately looked suspicious and wanted to ask if she was truly a fan, but then she realized that Xia Cun had been expressionless and quiet for days, so she stopped questioning. Maybe Xia Cun was just a quiet girl?
By the way, did she want to ask her something just now?
Miao Wen's mind went blank for a moment. While she was thinking, the cell phone in her shorts pocket rang. She took it out, looked at it, and answered the call.
The voice coming from the receiver was worn away by the sound of the waves, and only she could hear it. For some reason, she turned her head to look at the girl next to her, and then said, "Nothing, just chatting about comics."
Xia Cun heard that the matter seemed to be related to her.
She turned her head to look at the crowd and found Zhuo Manyi sitting on a beach chair not far away, holding up her phone and looking at them.
"Oh, then I'll ask her to come over." Miao Wen responded, and after hanging up the phone, she looked at Xia Cun again, "Zhuo Manyi asked us to go over and chat with her."
"us?"
"Go ahead, otherwise I don't know what to say to Tong Anyu when she's not here." Miao Wen pursed her lips immediately after she said that, realizing that she had inadvertently revealed that she wanted to drag others into the water, but Xia Cun didn't seem to hear it, and looked expressionless.
She couldn't tell what she was thinking, so she stood up first. Seeing Xia Cun stand up too, she breathed a sigh of relief.
The two girls walked down towards the coconut tree. Zhuo Manyi had already ordered two iced drinks for them and arranged them to sit on either side. She casually asked Miao Wen, "What comics are you talking about?"
"The one with the blue glasses and the big notebook, do you know her?"
"have no idea."
“…”
Miao Wen fell silent again and glanced at Xia Cun. She didn't expect Xia Cun to initiate a conversation, so she racked her brains to think hard. But then she heard Xia Cun say, "Can I use your telescope?"
The girl stared at the yellow telescope on the table, like a dog staring at a flying saucer.
Zhuo Manyi glanced at her and said, "It's up to you."
Xia Cun took the telescope and searched on the sea.
In fact, before she made up her mind to buy a camera, she also considered buying a telescope so that she could spy on Jiang Song remotely, just like now.
She asked Xia Lan which was better, a telescope or a camera, and Xia Lan replied that it was a telescope. When she asked why, Xia Lan changed his words and said that it was a camera. Xia Lan didn't even want to answer her seriously.
But she continued to ask. She wanted to know which one was real, the clear picture seen through the telescope or the blurry picture seen with the naked eye. However, Xiao Lan just asked her to stop asking strange questions.
"Aren't they tired?" Zhuo Manyi put down her drink and complained, "I wouldn't have come if I had known."
"Can you surf?" Xia Chuan put down the telescope and asked her.
"What can't I do? But there are so many people here, I'm too lazy to join in the fun..." Zhuo Manyi said this, as if she had thought of something. She suddenly pushed up her sunglasses, picked up her tablet, found a video and put it on the table. "Besides, this video is enough for surfing."
In the video, the weather seemed gloomy, and giant green waves pushed outward like a wall. The crests rolled, one after another, threatening to swallow the boy like a beast. But he always managed to cut away at the last second before the wave collapsed, his board tail scraping against the white crests, leaving behind a beautiful, clean water mark. The waves roared, but he was light and free, while the person recording and others on shore cheered him on.
"Is this Jiang Song?" Miao Wen asked.
"Bingo!" Zhuo Manyi said, "I downloaded this from his Instagram. It seems to be a video from Byron Bay last summer."
Her tone was inexplicably proud, making people confused about what she was proud of.
“Can you send it to me?”
Zhuo Manyi frowned at Xia Cun's unexpected request, and a strong sense of displeasure surged up. She closed the tablet with a stern face and said in a cold voice: "I advise you not to have any unreasonable thoughts."
The girl's naturally aggressive beauty exudes a deterrent power at this moment.
Xia Cun stared at her for a while and asked, "Why?"
It was almost like a disguised admission that she had improper thoughts about Jiang Song. Zhuo Manyi frowned even deeper: "Why? Don't you have any self-awareness?"
"What about you?"
"What do you mean!" Zhuo Manyi raised her voice because of her questioning.
During the confrontation, cheers came from the shore not far away. When they looked over, Jiang Song had already come back to the shore after the waves. He took the long towel handed to him by his assistant, covered his wet hair with it, and walked towards the surfing center.
He always easily catches other people's attention.
Zhuo Manyi saw Xia Cun looking over as well, and her eyebrows raised: "Don't you think you are from different worlds?"
"What about you?"
"Hey, what do you mean? What's wrong with me? Am I terrible?"
How could the only daughter of a fund tycoon be so unbearable? Xia Cun certainly didn't mean that. She just asked her again: "What about when he returns to Japan? Will you go there too?"
"What do you care if I go or not? You're so freaky." Zhuo Manyi picked up the tablet and muttered angrily, as if she was very angry. She turned around and said, "At least I can't be like you, begging for mercy and trying to get here. It's just a dog-skin plaster."
Xia Cun said nothing, but after a few moments of silence he stood up and walked away without a word.
The remaining two girls looked at her. Zhuo Manyi seemed to be hesitant to speak, while Miao Wen had a serious expression and seemed afraid to speak. Finally, she looked at her nose with her eyes and her heart with her nose.
Xia Cun left the bustling beach and walked to the nearby residential area.
Mangoes, mangosteens and green coconuts were piled in front of the fruit stall. The owner was chopping coconuts with a chopping knife in his hand. Two children in beach pants were squatting beside him eating Qingbuliang.
She touched the net bag she carried across her body, and finally bought a bottle of ice water worth two dollars at the convenience store.
After passing through two residential courtyards, there was a low stone wall leaning against the sea. Fishing boats were moored on the shore, and bamboo racks for drying fish swayed in the sea breeze. Xia Cun sat down against the wall, unscrewed the cap, and gulped down half a bottle of water. The water droplets on the outside of the bottle wet his palms.
"Xia Zunsheng! Can you please stop sticking to me like a dog-skin plaster?"
"I'm your aunt, not your mother!"
If "dog-skin plaster" is the nickname Xia Cun hates the most, then what she hates even more is that someone uses "dog-skin plaster" to refer to her.
She rarely saw Xia Lan cry. After all, Xia Lan always looked so low on energy that she didn't care about anything. However, she always had an unforgettable memory of Xia Lan crying.
She cried so ugly, her glasses were thrown away, her hair was stuck to her face with tears, her face was wrinkled and red, as if she was back to the day when she was first born as a baby, crying loudly.
It was a kind of catharsis, an outburst of emotions after a long period of accumulation, a young woman or girl crying out in pain.
Is Xia Cun just a dog-skin plaster for Xia Lan?
So what about her to Jiang Song?
What was it that she had been stalking him for a whole semester?
She pulled her phone out of her net bag and opened a chat box. The other person's note was "Haruka." She asked Haruka, "Do you think I'm a dog-skin plaster?"
The chat box was very quiet. After staring at it for an unknown amount of time, a figure appeared over her.
Xia Cun raised his head and saw Jiang Song standing sideways in the sun. He had a pretty face, damp hair, and the blue diamond earring in his left ear was sparkling.
"どうしたの?"
Again, he asked her what was wrong.
Clear, pure, like an angel.
Xia Cun thought that she couldn't let Jiang Song know that she was following him.
