One hundred and fifty-five

One hundred and fifty-five

Forty-eight candidates entered the main hall one after another to take the exam.

Among the first thirty people, eleven were qualified, but most of them could identify three herbs, a few could identify four, and only one could identify five. No one could identify all of them correctly.

When Yu Ying wrote down a qualified name in the booklet, she noticed the thirty-first person coming in, and the next moment she felt a shadow looming over her.

She seemed to be feeling depressed.

She raised her eyes slightly and saw a pair of big feet wearing straw sandals. She slowly moved her eyes upwards. After seeing the whole picture clearly, there was a moment of surprise on her face.

She said the boy should be between ten and fifteen years old. Although he would look much older due to the hard times, the man in front of her seemed a little too mature.

The coarse linen clothes are covered with patches, which must mean that the family is not well off.

But his family was not well off, so how could he grow so tall and strong at the age of a teenager?

This man's figure is almost as tall and strong as Fu Zhen.

He has a dark complexion and looks honest and simple, and doesn't seem to have a good memory or be quick-witted.

"You..." Yu Ying started to speak, but then swallowed the words to ask about his age. This man might not be qualified, so she would ask again after he passed.

Yu Ying changed the subject and said, "I'll give you that herb, and you just tell me its name, characteristics, and effects. Do you understand?"

The man nodded honestly: "I understand."

Yu Ying lowered her eyes and picked up one of the seven herbs on the table.

The man took a look at it and then opened his mouth and said, "Peucedanum chinense has fan-like leaves, a short, gray-brown, cylindrical stem covered with fine hairs, and a thick, brown root neck. It can resolve phlegm, relieve coughs, and alleviate asthma. Both the roots and leaves can be used as medicine."

The details are exactly the same and it is much clearer than what others have explained.

Yu Ying picked up another one.

"Prunella vulgaris has a creeping rhizome with fibrous roots at the nodes and many branches. Its flowers are purple-red and it has the effects of clearing the liver and purging fire, dispersing nodules and reducing swelling. Both its roots and leaves can be used as medicine."

Yu Ying quickly picked up the next herb, and the man answered them all correctly.

Four, five, six, seven, all correct, almost identical to what she had just said.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. This probably applies to the person in front of you.

Although the requirement for accepting students is around fifteen years old, rules are fixed, but people are dynamic. Good seedlings are hard to come by, and if you really come across an outstanding one, this requirement can be relaxed.

But if you lied, that's something to consider.

Yu Ying put down the last herb, looked at him, and asked, "Excuse me, how old are you?"

The man didn't dodge at all and replied, "Twenty-two. If Doctor Yu feels it's not appropriate, I will leave."

At the end of his words, the man's face showed a hint of loss.

Well, that's honest.

Yu Ying pondered for a moment and said, "Which village are you from, and what's your name?"

The man replied, "Chenjia Village, Chen Minglang."

Chenjiacun is the same village as Uncle Chen and the owner of Wuji Restaurant, Chen Minglang. The word Minglang means bright and spacious. The person who came up with this name is quite knowledgeable.

Yu Ying picked up her pen and wrote the six characters "Chen Minglang of Chenjia Village" on the book. Then she looked up and said, "Although there are age requirements, we are accepting students to help the world. If you answered all the questions correctly, you have the potential. There is no need to be bound by the rules."

Ordinary people couldn't remember the characteristics and effects of seven medicinal herbs almost word for word. As far as she knew, the only person who could remember them word for word was Fu Wei.

A genius like Fu Wei is no longer an ordinary person, so he naturally cannot be used for comparison.

Since Chen Minglang has such a good memory, he will naturally learn things faster than those who have passed the test.

Talent is hard to come by.

When the man heard this, a look of surprise immediately appeared on his dark face.

"Go to the hospital and wait. You can listen to the instructions after all the exams are finished."

The man nodded repeatedly, then turned and walked out of the main room.

As soon as he came out, everyone in the yard turned their attention to him again.

Everyone had the same idea as Yu Ying, and they were thinking - with such a big body, he doesn't look like he's fifteen or sixteen years old!

Although everyone was surprised, no one dared to speak for the time being.

After Yu Ying finished the assessment, she went out into the yard and asked Fu An to take the booklet and read out the names on it.

The qualified names were read out, and those who were called stood aside. As for those who did not pass, some were disappointed and depressed, some could not help crying, and some were dissatisfied.

"I don't accept it. That big guy clearly doesn't look like a teenager. Why did he pass?"

The person who spoke was a young man of about thirteen or fourteen years old. Yu Ying remembered that during the test just now, he stammered before answering the names of three medicinal herbs correctly, but he only remembered the names of the herbs.

As soon as he said this, some people agreed.

Yu Ying asked back, "How many people did I say I wanted?"

The young man replied, "Twenty."

"Then count how many people have passed the test."

The young man immediately counted towards the qualified people. After counting once, he seemed to realize something was wrong. After counting again, he said in surprise, "How can there be 21 people?"

Yu Ying said, "I've hired Chen Minglang as my assistant instructor to help me manage the school's affairs. Adding the twenty students, there are naturally twenty-one people in total. Do you have anything else to say?"

As soon as Yu Ying finished speaking, everyone looked surprised, including Chen Minglang himself.

The young man shook his head grimly.

Yu Ying retracted her gaze and continued, "The exam is over. It's noon now. I've had people prepare some water and steamed buns. You all can eat before you go back."

After all, they are all teenagers, the youngest is only ten years old. Nowadays, children of this age are at most in high school.

Those children whose families are poor cannot afford to ride in ox carts, so they may be rushed to the county town before dawn.

Yu Ying had thought of this possibility a long time ago, and asked someone to prepare some food for today. Those who came in the morning were given a steamed bun before leaving.

Most of the people present were children from poor families. They were originally depressed, but when they heard that there was food, their eyes lit up.

Yu Ying had someone bring a large basket full of steamed buns into the yard and asked them to line up to get two each.

The steamed buns were steamed today and are still warm.

Some people ate one or half of it, and put the rest away, apparently to take home and eat with their family.

The weather in February was still cold, so Yu Ying had someone boil two large buckets of ginger sugar tea in the morning to warm the children.

Ten bamboo tubes and a bucket of water were placed in front of the teapot. After the person in front finished drinking, he would scoop out the water and rinse it for the next person to use.

After eating and drinking their fill, no one had the nerve to find fault anymore, and everyone thought that Dr. Yu was a kind-hearted female Bodhisattva.

Yu Ying said, "Children from each village should gather together and go back together. They can't run around."

She glanced at it and pretended to be serious and said, "Do you understand?"

The children immediately became well-behaved and responded loudly, "Got it, Doctor Yu!"

Yu Ying smiled and nodded, saying, "While it's still early, you should go back earlier. Those who are qualified should report here before sunset the day after tomorrow."

A large group of children left one after another.

Yu Ying called Chen Minglang and asked him to stay first.

After everyone had left, Yu Ying said, "You're not old enough, and keeping you here would be unfair to others. So I'm going to ask you to help manage the school's chores, cook for the children, and keep them in check, so they don't get into trouble. You can also sit in on the class on weekdays. Are you willing?"

The ones who came were all teenagers, at the age when they could go fishing in the river and take bird eggs from trees. If no one was watching over them, I was really afraid something might happen.

It just so happened that the person in front of me was tall and strong, and quite intimidating.

Chen Minglang nodded quickly: "If I can stay and learn some skills, let alone manage chores and cook, even if I have to wash their clothes every day, I'm willing to do it!"

He knew a lot of words and had a good memory, but some people were afraid to use him for good jobs because of his size, so he could only do some heavy work.

Suddenly I heard that the clinic was recruiting students. Not only could I learn skills, but food and accommodation were provided, and it was free. I was eager to try.

Even after hearing that only teenagers were wanted, I still decided to give it a try after a little disappointment. I never thought that he would actually succeed.

"No, they should take care of their own personal belongings and take turns cooking with you. You don't have to do any yard chores, but you'll be the one to arrange them. You have to make them fear you, and only then will they obey you. Don't let them think you're a big, stupid person who can be bullied."

Upon hearing this, Chen Minglang touched his head and grinned, "I understand."

Yu Ying nodded, glanced at his figure, and then said, "There will be some heavy work for you to do in the future. Are you willing to do it?"

The staff of Yongxitang are all women with limited strength, so heavy work such as transporting medicinal materials and using water has to be done by others, which is rather troublesome.

Chen Minglang nodded repeatedly: "Of course I am willing!"

Yu Ying said seriously, "Of course, asking you to be my assistant is not an excuse. If you become my assistant, you will be provided with food and lodging at this medical school, and I will pay you 90 cents a month."

Chen Minglang waved his hands repeatedly: "No wages, no wages, you can still make an exception and let me study medicine, how can I be so ungrateful and still accept wages!"

Yu Ying, however, said in a businesslike manner, "I will only ask you to do something if you pay me. Don't refuse."

Chen Minglang was about to say something when Fu An, standing beside him, jokingly said, "If you don't want to take the money, do you not want to be my deputy anymore?"

Such a tall and strong man was immediately at a loss for words after hearing these words.

Yu Ying glanced down at Fu An and tapped his head: "Don't try to bluff me."

He retracted his gaze and looked at Chen Minglang. "Although you're my deputy, the conditions, aside from the marriage, are the same as everyone else's. You're not allowed to start your own practice or work as a doctor in another clinic within five years of your medical training. You must work under me for a full five years. If you have no objection, you'll come the day after tomorrow to sign and seal the agreement with the others."

Chen Minglang nodded, but then said, "I'll come tomorrow. If you need any help, I can help."

Yu Ying thought about it and realized that the medical school had just opened and there was indeed a lot of miscellaneous work, so she nodded.

After Chen Minglang left, Yu Ying looked around the yard. She had never thought that she would be teaching and educating people in this era.

Thinking that I would also leave my mark on this generation, I suddenly felt cheerful.

After returning home, she wanted to write a letter to Fu Wei to tell him about opening a medical school.

Thinking of this, I couldn't help but look towards Yuzhang.

Fu Wei had to help County Magistrate Zhou resolve the unjust accusation he had received and the unrest in the north. This meant he had to stay in Yuzhang for a long time, which meant he and his wife would not be able to see each other for a long time.

Although she is currently busy with the affairs of the medical school, once she has some free time, she can't help but miss him.

I miss the warmth of his body when he hugged her, the warmth of his breath whispering in her ear, and the delightful way he smiled.
