Chapter 216 He Transformed into a Vanguard General

Chapter 216 He Transformed into a Vanguard General

The centurion struggled as he suffocated.

But he was too weak to exert any strength, and soon Feng San smothered him to death.

This was Feng San's first murder.

As he watched as he easily killed the burly centurion, his heart pounded and his whole body trembled violently.

But this is not because of fear or apprehension.

Instead, it was excitement.

An unprecedented feeling of excitement rushed to his head, making him feel as sweet as if he had drunk a delicacy.

Thinking back to how he was just a poor peasant who could freeze or starve to death at any moment, and how he has become a soldier in the Zhenhuang Army and will soon become a general, his rise to prominence has come so quickly, it's exhilarating.

"Lord Feng, the General requests your presence." A voice sounded from outside the tent.

It was too late for Feng San to slip away now. But then he thought that the centurion's men all knew that the two of them were drinking in the tent, and that if he tried to escape, it would only arouse suspicion.

Then, on a sudden inspiration, he filled a wine bowl on the table, which was bigger than his face, with wine, then submerged the centurion face down in it, and then lay down on the ground with the wine jar in his arms.

"Lord Feng, Lord Feng?" The subordinates outside the tent, not hearing a response from the centurion, called out a few more times.

The tent remained quiet.

The two subordinates had no choice but to lift the curtain and peek inside.

The centurion was slumped over the table, and Feng San lay on the ground, both motionless.

"Are Lord Feng and that young man both drunk?"

"No, we must wake Lord Feng right away; the General is still waiting for him!"

The two quickly walked into the tent.

They stepped past Feng San and came to the centurion's side, one on each side.

"Lord Feng, wake up..."

"grown ups?"

"Something's wrong... Why did the master suddenly collapse into the wine bowl!"

The two men panicked and hurriedly tried to straighten the centurion, but he tilted his head to the side and fell down, revealing a bloodless face.

"Lord Feng! Lord Feng!"

His men shouted and shook the centurion's shoulders. When he did not respond, they mustered their courage and checked his breathing and pulse. They then discovered that he was dead.

The two men were horrified and immediately grabbed Feng San by the collar, slapping him repeatedly across the face. "Feng San! Wake up! Wake up!"

After enduring several slaps, Feng San pretended to be slightly sober, his words slurred and his eyes blank, "Um... what happened? Why did you hit me?"

The two subordinates glared angrily.

"Lord Feng is dead!"

"What exactly happened?! Tell me!"

Feng Sanxian looked incredulous.

He deliberately hiccuped, grinning as he said, "You guys... what... what are you joking about... isn't my godfather... drinking with me... oh... oh, he's dead. Come on... you guys... drink with my godfather too, I really can't drink anymore..."

"Drink your mother's ass!" One of his subordinates slapped him twice more, drawing blood from his mouth. "Wake up, you bastard!"

Another subordinate dragged Feng San to the corpse and shouted, "Open your dog eyes and take a look!"

Feng San pretended to look at it carefully, even checking its breath, then threw himself onto the centurion and wailed, "Godfather! My good godfather! How could you suddenly die! Didn't you say you wanted to drink with your son until dawn? Godfather!"

The centurion's two men had originally planned to get some information out of Feng San, but it seems they have no choice but to give up now.

Soon after, the camp doctor learned of the news and rushed over to examine the centurion's body.

The conclusion drawn was that the centurion had drowned.

Based on what his two subordinates saw when they came in, it was quite obvious that he was drowned because of the large bowl of strong liquor in front of him.

He was so drunk that he fell headfirst into the bowl of wine, his face submerged and unable to breathe. He also lost consciousness due to drunkenness and was drowned by the large bowl of wine.

"Waaah... Godfather! It's all my fault!" Feng San cried his heart out. "If I hadn't been such a terrible drinker and gotten drunk before you, Godfather, you wouldn't have suffered this fate! I deserve to die!"

Although the centurion's men felt there was something fishy about the matter, the current situation proved that the centurion had died unexpectedly, and there were more important matters to attend to, so they had no choice but to stop thinking about it.

"Feng San, stop crying!"

"The General wants to know more about the food, clothing, and bedding. Lord Feng is dead, so you'll have to go and tell the General!"

Faced with the two urging him on, Feng San was overjoyed inside, but his face still showed a look of unbearable pain.

He cried and wailed, saying that he had just told his adoptive father everything, and was waiting for his adoptive father to finish drinking so that he could report to the general. He never expected that in the blink of an eye, they would be separated forever.

I am in so much pain that I am afraid I will not be able to see the general.

His two subordinates panicked, pulled him up from the ground, and gave him a long talk of persuasion and comfort, telling him to consider the bigger picture.

Feng San then pretended to be reluctant, wiping away his tears and saying, "Since that's the case, then... I'll go see the General. Please lead the way."

Soon, Feng San arrived at the tent of the General Who Guards the Wasteland.

"This humble one, Feng San, greets the Great General." Feng San prostrated himself and knelt in respect, then introduced himself as one of Centurion Feng's men.

General Zhenhuang frowned. "Why did I send you? Where is he?!"

Feng San feigned sadness and told the general that the man had drunk too much in his excitement and accidentally drowned in the wine bowl.

General Zhenhuang was stunned for a moment. "Such a thing is true? That's really strange."

"If the general does not believe me, he can call the army doctor and others to question them."

"No need. He was just a centurion; he's dead, so be it. But..."

"General, actually, the reason he was able to obtain those rare items was because I told him. If you want to know anything, just ask me."

"Um?"

General Zhenhuang beamed with joy. "So it was you who truly made the contribution. No wonder when I appointed him as a centurion and asked him to explain in detail, he said he wanted to go and reward his brothers first, and would come back to tell me the details later."

Feng San cursed the centurion in his heart, then looked at the general with a smirk, without speaking immediately.

The General Zhenhuang then said, "Since you are the one who made the contribution, and he has died unexpectedly, then you shall take over his position as centurion."

Feng San rubbed his hands and said, "General, I have always been determined to serve the Great Wilderness, but fate has played a cruel trick on me. Even though I have the ability to lead troops into battle, I have never been appreciated..."

"Hehe," the general laughed, "Judging from your words, you have lofty ambitions. Do you look down on the position of centurion? Surely you don't aspire to be a chiliarch?"

Feng San sneered inwardly.

Centurion?

That's still not quite right!

I need to at least become a general!

Otherwise, why go through all this trouble, betraying Niujia Village, killing the centurion, and putting on such a show?

“Reporting to the Great General,” Feng San knelt down and said solemnly, “those unique foods that are delicious and filling, as well as the thick cotton clothes and bedding that are rare in the world, actually all originated from the Xuanhuang Mountains.”

General Zhenhuang frowned. "What do you mean? Are you trying to tell me that those things grew in the mountains and were picked up by the villagers of that Niujia Village? Do you think I'm a fool?"

Feng San quickly said, "Such rare things certainly couldn't grow out of the mountains on their own. There's a military camp in those mountains! These are the military supplies and provisions from that camp!"

General Zhenhuang slammed his fist on the table. "Absurd! The Xuanhuang Mountains are deep in the forests, how could there possibly be a military camp there?!"

"General, please calm down and let me tell you the whole story. If I have told you anything false, you may do as you please!" Feng San then vividly recounted how he followed several people from Niujia Village into the mountains to hunt, and how he discovered the Xuan Kingdom's camp and obtained the supplies.

After hearing this bizarre story, the General of Zhenhuang was filled with astonishment.

He simply couldn't believe that the Xuan Kingdom actually had the ability to set up a camp inside the Xuanhuang Mountains.

Although what Feng San said was bizarre and exaggerated, it didn't seem like something that could be made up out of thin air.

He frowned and thought for a moment, then asked in a deep voice, "The terrain in the Xuanhuang Mountains is so complex and the environment so harsh! How could the Xuan Kingdom possibly set up camp and station troops there! They simply couldn't do it! Tell me! What exactly are you trying to achieve by making up this nonsense to fool this general!"

"General! Everything I said is true!" Feng San panicked and hurriedly kowtowed.

General Zhenhuang stood up, drew his sword, and held it to the back of Feng San's neck, coldly saying, "If you don't tell the truth, I'll cut you down right now!"

Feng San was so frightened he almost wet his pants, but he still insisted that he was not lying.

General Zhenhuang was actually trying to put pressure on him and test him. When he saw that the guy was about to die but still didn't change his mind, he began to believe him a little.

Feng San noticed that the knife at his neck hadn't come down, and quickly said, "General! You saw the food, clothing, and bedding with your own eyes. It's beyond our comprehension. Although we don't know how the Xuan Kingdom's Zhenxuan Army obtained them, it proves that they must have been able to secretly set up camp in the Xuanhuang Mountains thanks to these excellent supplies!"

The General of Zhenhuang raised his long sword slightly. "That's interesting. Continue."

Feng San secretly breathed a sigh of relief. "The people in that secret camp can casually give so many supplies to Niujia Village, and they are still so generous even though winter is coming. This is enough to prove that they have more supplies stored in the camp than we imagined! This can further lead us to deduce that the Zhenxuan Army is preparing to attack our Great Wilderness!"

The General of Zhenhuang was filled with doubt and uncertainty.

The Xuanhuang Mountains have always been an insurmountable barrier between the Xuan Kingdom and the Great Wilderness.

It's impossible to get across from there, and it's also difficult to get across from here.

If there is a dispute, the two sides must cross mountains and valleys to meet in the mountains before they can fight.

Neither side wants to do something that's thankless and exhausting.

What's more, they would raise an army to cross the mountains and attack the enemy.

Wouldn't that mean losing most of your own troops first, only to be handed over to the enemy to be beaten?

Who would do something so stupid!

Especially in winter, when heavy snow blocks the mountains, soldiers and horses entering the mountains are doomed to die.

Therefore, no one in the Great Wilderness ever imagined that the Xuan Kingdom would launch an attack under such circumstances.

"General..." Feng San continued, forcing himself to speak, "Our soldiers here are starving and freezing, completely unprepared, while Zhenxuan Pass in the Xuanhuang Mountains has already begun its covert operations. Perhaps... perhaps one day we'll wake up and open our eyes to find the Zhenxuan Army of the Xuan Kingdom already at our doorstep!"

General Zhenhuang shuddered and dropped his long sword to the ground with a clang.

He was originally just one of General Liu's subordinates. He only took over the position of Grand General after General Liu died. He hadn't even had a chance to enjoy the benefits of being the commander-in-chief of the border before he was about to face the attack of the Xuan Kingdom's army.

The King of the Great Wilderness recently issued an order that even the distribution of supplies has been cut off this year, requiring each border post to resolve the issue on its own.

If the Xuan Kingdom's army really comes to attack, Zhenhuang Pass will be powerless to resist!

"General, don't panic." Feng San picked up the long sword, raised it above his head with both hands, and presented it. "Now that we know about Xuan Kingdom's secret plot, we can prepare in advance."

The General of Zhenhuang took the long sword, thought for a moment, and then helped Feng San up. "What's your plan?"

Seeing the general's drastic change in attitude, Feng San knew that becoming a general was a sure thing, and his ego grew even more inflated.

"It's actually very simple," Feng San said confidently. "As long as we catch them off guard and take over the Xuan Kingdom's secret camp in the Xuanhuang Mountains, their painstakingly built camp will become our territory, and the abundant resources within will also be ours!"

General Zhenhuang said, "Since they have the ability to secretly build a camp there, they must not only have sufficient supplies, but also be very well prepared. In military operations, conquering strongholds has always been a difficult task. If I were to send troops into the Xuanhuang Mountains, in such terrible weather, I'm afraid my soldiers would perish in the forest before we even reach their camp."

Feng San chuckled and patted his chest, saying, "I know their camp inside and out! And I'm familiar with the terrain. Even if the mountains are blocked by heavy snow, I can still lead my men to charge in! If the General trusts me, please allow me to serve you faithfully!"

"Great, that's wonderful!" General Zhenhuang had been waiting for this, and his face lit up with a smile. "How many men do you need?"

Feng San recalled what he had observed in the camp.

Unfortunately, he was mostly staying in a tent at the time and was being watched, so it was impossible to get to know everything. He had just made a boast only to try and get a chance to become a general.

He pondered for a moment, then analyzed with an air of seriousness, "There should be at most... two thousand people in that camp. Please give me five thousand soldiers, General, and I will surely wipe out all those Xuan Kingdom people!"

He asked for 5,000 men, mainly because he was unsure of himself and had never led troops in battle before. He thought that as long as he had enough men, he could win even with his eyes closed.

Seeing his confidence, General Zhenhuang agreed without hesitation, "I will now appoint you as a vanguard general and allocate 7,000 Zhenhuang troops to you. If you can capture that camp, I will promote you to deputy general of Zhenhuang Pass!"

Feng San was surprised that the general had given him more men than expected, and even more surprised that he had directly received the title of vanguard general, and even more surprised that he could become the deputy general here. He was so excited that he knelt down and kowtowed three times.

"I am deeply grateful for the General's kindness! I... this humble general will certainly live up to your expectations!"

"Hahaha, General Feng, please rise!"

Upon hearing the title "General Feng," Feng San felt elated and eagerly replied, "General, I will set off immediately! If I fail to capture the Xuan Kingdom camp in the Xuanhuang Mountains, I will offer my head in retribution!"
