Chapter 2: Digging a Trench

If you don’t know, then skip this step.

Jiang Xue said, "We can dig some deep pits, cover them with hay, and bury sharpened wood underneath, or throw in some thorny brambles..."

After carefully explaining her thoughts, Jiang Xue added, "Of course, these are just traps. We can also get some thorn wood to build a defensive wall. Combining these two, we'll form a situation that's easy to defend but difficult to attack. I'm sure they won't be able to do anything to us."

She had already surveyed the surrounding terrain, and she knew exactly what thorny vines and thorny brambles were nearby.

It just takes some effort to move them over.

Mu Feng stared at the topographic map she had drawn and nodded solemnly, "That's a good idea. But we don't have any suitable tools right now. How are we going to dig this trap?"

Jiang Xue quickly drew a straight line on the map. "It's easy. Everyone's played in the mud, right? We can dig a ditch to divert the river water to the front. Flooded land is easy to dig. Once the trap is dug, we can just fill the ditch."

This was the only way she could think of to dig a trap quickly.

The productivity of the Snake Tribe is too backward. They don't even have a pot to boil water. They are completely wild. Under such conditions, can we still expect them to use stones to dig a ditch to divert water?

That will have to wait until the year of the monkey and the horse.

"It's just that these thorn trees are a bit troublesome to deal with. But if we want them to survive, we have to dig them up with their roots and transplant them to this area."

As she spoke, she drew a circle on the map.

Mu Feng thought seriously for a while and said, "If we connect this area, how are we going to get out?"

Jiang Xue helplessly drew another circle on the map: "We can build a door here. If the Eagle Tribe attacks us, we can hide behind the door and fight one at a time. If we fight two at a time, we can fight a pair."

Hearing her words, Mu Feng's eyes lit up and he immediately made a decision: "Okay, let's do it!"

The old tribe leader was still upset about Jiang Xue injuring Ashan. She said unhappily, "No, we've suffered too much loss right now. If we don't move, do you think the Eagle Tribe will let us go? Where will we be able to stay in the future?"

Jiang Xue was not surprised at all that she would object, as the grudge between them had already been formed a long time ago.

Before, when she just woke up, she was harassed and followed by her son Ashan. In a fit of rage, she took a stone spear and injured him. It was from then on that the old patriarch disliked her.

Jiang Xue stood up and said, "Well, since you plan to move out, I won't stop you. However, I will still use my actions to prove that this is feasible."

She decided to complete this seemingly daunting project on her own.

She carried the stone spear that had injured Ashan that day, came to the river, found a suitable place, and began to dig the soil bit by bit with the stone spear.

With no one to help her, she was alone and could only try to compress the width of the ditch as much as possible.

The water in the ditch reached the place she expected, soaking the surrounding soil, so it was not too difficult for her to dig.

She was not in a hurry. As long as the water moistened the dry soil a little, she would dig a little.

Starting from the riverside, it took a whole day to repair one-fifth of the ditch.

Although the progress of digging the ditch was unsatisfactory, at least she saw hope.

After the first day of work, she was exhausted and didn't even want to eat dinner. She just fell asleep on the dry and soft grass in the cave.

The next day, Jiang Xue got up early, signed in at the ditch, picked up the stone spear and dug a short distance. Fortunately, it started to rain lightly.

The drizzle quickly turned into a heavy downpour, pouring down on her body and soaking her clothes. Unable to bear the cold, she retreated to the cave and dried her clothes by the campfire.

The rain stopped before her clothes were dry. She couldn't sit still, so she picked up the stone spear and started her previous work again.

Mu Feng stood at the entrance of the cave, looking at her lonely figure and sighed. He picked up a stone knife and started digging a ditch with her.

Mu Feng's joining made the others a little restless. Soon, two more old men joined in the work of digging the ditch.

After a rain, the ground was much softer than before. With help from others, they completed the remaining half after digging for a morning.

She asked everyone to rest and walked barefoot in the ditch, stomping the soil in the ditch firmly with her feet.

This ditch may not play a big role in the future, but it is still very important now.

The work had just begun in the afternoon when two more women joined in. With strength in numbers, the ditch was soon dug to the location where Jiang Xue wanted to set up the fence.

When they arrived here, it was already dark, so Jiang Xue asked everyone to rest and prepare to start work again early the next morning.

On the third day, they split into two teams. One team used the ditch as the midpoint and dug towards both sides, while Mu Feng took two people into the forest to look for the "thorny bushes" that Jiang Xue had mentioned.

By the time he brought back dozens of 'thorny bushes', Jiang Xue and several other people had already dug the ditch, and now all that was left was to widen and deepen it outwards.

Digging the ditch could not be rushed. Even though they had more people and more strength and the soil was relatively soft, they had only widened it outward by about half a meter. Both the width and depth were far from what Jiang Xue wanted.

Mu Feng threw the thorns in front of Jiang Xue and was about to ask her what to do with them. Jiang Xue put down the work in her hands, picked up the stone spear, and planted it along the ditch that had been dug earlier.

Regardless of whether they can survive or not, plants cannot grow without water and sunlight. At present, they do not need to be watered, and the rest depends on themselves.

On the fourth day, without waiting for Jiang Xue to take action, the people of the Snake Tribe took the initiative to join the project.

After everyone worked together, by the tenth day, the trench had taken shape - nearly two meters wide and one person tall, and about twenty-five meters long from east to west.

The thorn trees were also neatly arranged in the valley, forming a dense thorn barrier, leaving only a gap for the tribesmen to enter and exit.

Under Jiang Xue's guidance, they made a chevaux de frise of suitable size at the gap using trees and vines cut from the mountain. They then tied three pieces of wood together with vines and placed them over the trench to serve as a bridge.

As for the excavated soil, Jiang Xue did not waste it. Instead, she piled it by the river to block the gaps on the east and west sides. When the time was right, she wanted to make some more modifications.

The old patriarch looked at them working hard with cold eyes, looked at Ashan who was following him with some depression, snorted heavily, and sat down in front of the fire without saying a word.
