Chapter 37 Premature Birth

After some time, Sun's errand boy, Shunfeng, whom they hadn't seen for over a month, finally reappeared.

This time, Shunfeng wasn't the only one who came; there was also a shy, unfamiliar young servant.

"Madam Cheng, it's been a long time!" Shunfeng greeted her as soon as he entered, introducing, "I brought quite a lot of things this time, so Second Madam had Shunda come with me!"

Cheng Ruyi looked at the large box and was startled. "What's going on? Why are so many things being sent over all of a sudden?"

"The second wife really wanted to see you in person, but she just gave birth to the third young lady the other day, so she probably won't be able to go out for a while. That's probably why she thought of bringing you more things this time!"

"What! Liu'er gave birth? Wasn't her due date next month? How come it's earlier?" Ruyi was really shocked this time. Premature birth usually means that something unexpected has happened.

Unfortunately, Shunfeng stammered and couldn't explain it clearly, only saying that his second wife had written a letter, and that he would know after reading it.

Ruyi opened the box and found a box of red eggs, a thick box of letters, other daily necessities such as cloth, and finally two ten-pound pieces of pork belly.

It seems the Yang family slaughtered another pig after they found out Liu'er had given birth. The pork looks quite fresh; it was probably delivered just yesterday.

Unable to finish reading her best friend's letter, Ruyi could only choose two of the largest rabbits from the rabbit cage, along with a large pot of nourishing water and some fresh vegetables as a return gift, which she then had the two servants take back.

Unfortunately, the first litter of rabbits will not be fully grown for some time. The two largest rabbits are only about seven or eight pounds. The second litter of rabbits were only born recently. Ruyi can only send two rabbits over after the first litter has reached adulthood.

Shunfeng and Shunda were shocked when they saw the two live rabbits, and it wasn't until they stood in front of the Sun family's gate that they slowly came to their senses.

After returning to her room, Ruyi carefully examined the thick stack of letters written by Yang Liuer and finally learned about the recent events that had happened in their family. It just goes to show that reality is always more exciting than fiction...

On the day the wealthy family in the north of the city was robbed for the second time a while ago, the Sun family's house was also broken into!

Not only were grains and meat stolen from the house, but a lot of silver and jewelry were also stolen. However, the thief used some unknown method to come and go freely in the Sun family's house without leaving a trace.

At first, the old master of the Sun family thought it was an inside job, but after searching the house thoroughly, he found no stolen goods. With no other option, he had to report it to the authorities.

However, the government was also preoccupied with its own problems. They simply registered the losses and sent two constables to conduct a cursory inspection before disappearing from the scene.

Seeing that the thief could not be caught and the stolen goods might never be recovered, the atmosphere in the Sun family suddenly became very bad. Yang Liuer felt that the thief would definitely strike again after tasting the sweetness, so she remembered the simple trap written in Cheng Ruyi's letter and asked someone to set it up in her own yard.

Sure enough, the thief reappeared a few days ago and was caught red-handed!

An investigation revealed that the thief had a close relationship with Wu, the mistress of the first wife.

The thief kept claiming that he was Wu's lover, and even that the child was his. He said that he had only been away working for a short time when Wu turned around and hooked up with Sun Wenkang, and even abducted their son.

The Sun family felt utterly humiliated after hearing this. Wu immediately denied it and swore that she was innocent. She said that the thief was just a neighbor she had met a few times before, and that someone must have wanted to kill her and her son.

As they talked, everyone became increasingly agitated. Suddenly, Wu said she would die to prove her innocence, and she dragged her son toward a pillar next to Yang Liuer, causing chaos to erupt in the scene.

Finally, Wu was knocked unconscious, and Yang Liuer was knocked to the ground by someone, and immediately went into labor, bleeding profusely.

Fortunately, Sun Wenhui had the foresight to know that his wife's pregnancy was not very stable, so he hired two midwives to stay at home early on. In addition, Cheng Ruyi sent a lot of nourishing pills, vegetables and eggs during this period, so Yang Liuer's health was generally quite good, which is why the child and the mother were able to be saved.

After reading the letter, Cheng Ruyi couldn't help but sigh, "It's so nice to live in my family; it's so simple."

No matter how many twists and turns the Sun family's affairs take, she has no say in them. All she can do is try her best to take good care of her best friend's health.

When everyone asked about Yang Liuer's situation during dinner, Ruyi told them about the Sun family. She didn't mean to gossip, but she felt that her family members lived a relatively simple life, especially the children, who didn't know much about social customs and the inner workings of the household. She thought it would be good for them to hear more about these things so that they wouldn't be taken advantage of in the future.

Snap!

Xu Cui reacted the most strongly after hearing this. She slammed her hand on the table in anger, then stood up abruptly, exclaiming, "This is outrageous! This Wu woman is clearly a wicked devil!"

Everyone in the Cheng family present had just felt the table vibrate unusually, and Cheng Ruyi, who was sitting next to Xu Cui, could see the cracks on the table very clearly!

Ruyi was extremely surprised. She knew that Xu Cui was strong, but she didn't expect her to be this strong!

“But…maybe Wu really was wronged…she even took her own life to prove her innocence, maybe there’s more to the story?” Lin Xiaoman said weakly. She had also attempted suicide before and understood that people only despair when they are driven to the brink, so she couldn’t help but feel some sympathy for Wu.

For a moment, everyone couldn't help but wonder if Wu was really innocent.

Whether Wu was wronged or not, the truth of this matter is probably unknown for the time being. However, according to Liu'er's description, everyone was very emotional at the time. In the chaos, she noticed Wu glancing in her direction several times. Feeling uneasy, she deliberately retreated to a corner as far away from Wu as possible.

"Since Wu was so enraged that she wanted to prove her innocence by dying, shouldn't she have chosen the pillar closest to her to smash her head against for the most convenient reason? But instead, she dragged her son along, crossed the crowd, and traveled a long distance to smash her head against the pillar furthest from her. Isn't that very strange?"

Before Cheng Ruyi transmigrated, her favorite thing to read was ancient romance novels. Most of these novels were about palace intrigue and family feuds. Having been exposed to them all this time, she thought she was fairly familiar with these rather simple and clumsy methods.

“I understand now. This Wu woman didn’t actually want to commit suicide. She just wanted to harm Aunt Liu’er. But why would she want to harm Aunt Liu’er?” Cheng Yun’an followed her mother’s line of thought and came to this conclusion, but she didn’t understand it.

At this moment, Xu Cui calmed down as well. "Didn't we say before that the thief was caught because Liu'er set a trap in her own yard? Is Wu blaming Liu'er for catching the thief?"

"Isn't catching the thief a good thing? Why should we be blamed?" Now it was Cheng Yunle's turn to be confused.

"Is it because that thief made false accusations and damaged her reputation that she took her anger out on Aunt Liu'er?" Lin Xiaoman shook her head unconsciously as soon as she finished speaking. "That doesn't make sense either. The one who harmed her was clearly that thief. Aunt Liu'er is completely innocent!"

Seeing that everyone was puzzled, Cheng Ruyi spoke up again: "Let's not worry about why Wu did this, but she clearly knew that Liu'er was pregnant and about to give birth, and she deliberately led the crowd to her position. She definitely had ill intentions! Even if Wu didn't mean it at the time, her actions were indeed the main reason why Liu'er fell and went into premature labor."

The Cheng family members all agreed after hearing this, nodding in agreement.

"People's minds are always complicated. Sometimes you may not have done anything wrong, but some people will think you are wrong. So you should not have the heart to harm others, but you should not be without the heart to guard against others!"

Ruyi has always cherished her life. Even though she lived in a relatively stable society governed by the rule of law, she was always careful and cautious about her safety. Now that she has come to this feudal society where there is almost no rule of law and wars are everywhere, she has already died several times in just a few months if she is not careful.

Afterwards, everyone had a very lively discussion on this topic, and they almost forgot to eat dinner. It was only because Cheng Yan kept reminding and urging everyone that they finally finished dinner before dark.
