Chapter 1 Returning Home

It is already autumn, but the weather is still hot.

Wei Xiyin sat in the carriage. The narrow compartment was like a moving steamer, stuffy and hot. She could only keep wiping the sweat from her face with a handkerchief.

There was an ice basin at her feet. The ice inside had long since melted, but the tall boy still held on to the basin tightly. His face flushed red from the heat, and he breathed out, "Sister, I'm so hot."

It would have been fine if he hadn't said anything, but as soon as he did, Wei Xiyin couldn't help but burst out with anger. She turned around and glared at him, "You deserve it! Who told you to sneak out?"

The team was halfway out of Beijing when Ningshuang suddenly heard some movement under the carriage. She hurriedly called the guards to check, and only then did she discover Wei Lang hiding under the carriage.

Wei Xiyin wanted to send the man back directly, but he refused to do so. When forced into a corner, he lay on the ground and rolled around, unable to get up.

Wei Lang pouted with a look of grievance and explained, "Dad only let my sister chase grandfather, and I want to go and play too."

"Are you going out to play?" Wei Xiyin stretched out two fingers and poked his head. "Grandfather left Beijing in anger, and my father was worried about his safety, so he asked me to bring Chang Ying back to serve him."

She withdrew her hand and sighed softly, "Forget it, you won't understand even if I explain it to you."

Upon hearing this, Wei Lang showed an innocent expression, "I understand. Big brother said that grandfather is angry with His Majesty, but what does this have to do with my sister?"

Wei Xiyin turned her head away, not wanting to pay any more attention to him.

A few days ago, there was a severe drought in many places. The farmland was barren and many people starved to death. Then a plague broke out in the south... My grandfather Wei Ji submitted a memorial to the court requesting the dispatch of medical officers and allocation of grain for disaster relief.

The emperor approved it and ordered the five major granaries to each transfer 50,000 shi of grain to the disaster area.

However, when the special envoys arrived at the granaries in various places, they discovered that tens of thousands of stones of grain had disappeared, which accidentally led to a widespread corruption case.

Not long after this incident, my grandfather submitted a memorial to retire and return home. Without waiting for the emperor to ask him to stay, he packed his luggage the next day and set off for his hometown, Qinghe County, with a group of attendants.

In fact, everyone in the family understood that my grandfather pretended to be angry and took this opportunity to retire. In addition to expressing his attitude towards the corruption case and making His Majesty feel guilty, it was also because he was old and had to consider the younger generations of the family.

According to the imperial system, relatives were not allowed to hold important positions together or be in a superior-subordinate relationship. Since the Qinghe Wei family had produced a minister of the Central Secretariat, the highest position among all officials, the rest of the family had struggled to advance.

Wei Lang certainly didn't understand the twists and turns of officialdom, and Wei Xiyin was too lazy to explain it to him.

As for why she followed her grandfather back to his ancestral home, one reason was that her family was worried about her grandfather returning home alone; the other reason was that she had reached the age to get married.

Sixteen years old is the prime of life. In modern times, she would still be in high school, but here it is the time to talk about marriage. Her father asked her to follow him back to her hometown, not only to fulfill her filial piety to her grandfather, but also to arrange her marriage.

A big family like the Wei family pays attention to matching the two families' social status. She is the eldest daughter in the family, so her marriage naturally needs the approval of her grandfather.

Wei Xiyin was also helpless, but the general environment was like this, so she could only compromise and agree to it first, and then make a long-term plan after returning.

At this time, the sound of horse hooves was heard outside the carriage.

Chang Ying, who was at the front of the group, rode back and reported through the curtain, "Miss, the front is the border of Youzhou. Should we order a rest?"

Wei Xiyin lifted a corner of the curtain, glanced at the sky, and said to the outside of the car: "Go directly to Youzhou, and rest after arriving at the official post station."

"yes!"

In recent years, natural disasters have occurred frequently, refugees have been everywhere, and there has been unrest in various places. This time, there are more than a hundred soldiers escorting Wei Xiyin back to her hometown.

When the long team arrived at the post station, the local postmaster immediately came forward to greet them.

Ning Shuang got out of the carriage behind him, walked forward and lifted the curtain. Wei Xiyin asked the postmaster, "Did you see your grandfather passing by here?"

The postmaster quickly replied, "My lady, the Duke of Wei stayed here for a night two days ago and left at dawn the next day."

Wei Xiyin nodded and thanked him after hearing this.

She set out a day later and carried a lot of luggage with her, so her speed was naturally not as fast as her grandfather who traveled light.

I guess I can’t catch up with anyone.

Wei Xiyin didn't worry about it. If she couldn't catch up, then she couldn't catch up. She would just get home a few days later than her grandfather.

Seeing Chang Ying watching the guards packing their luggage, the brother and sister went into the house to rest under the guidance of the postmaster.

Post stations were official inns set up by the imperial court along the way. They had special courtyards for passing officials to rest. Officials of different ranks naturally received different treatments.

Although the Wei siblings did not hold any official positions, thanks to their elders, they were able to live in a courtyard of decent specifications with two floors. Standing in front of the window, they could see the mountains in the distance. The dense jungle covered the entire mountain, and the view was full of green.

It makes people happy just looking at it.

After entering the house and settling down.

Ningshuang began to get busy, moving some of their belongings into the house, taking out their own quilts and remaking the beds, and then asking the kitchen to bring water and make tea...

Wei Xiyin was sweating a lot. After a whole day's journey, she felt sticky and uncomfortable. She couldn't wait any longer, so she went into the house, grabbed some clothes to change into, and went into the bathroom.

When she came out of the shower, dinner was already on the table.

Wei Lang was sitting at the table, staring at her eagerly: "Sister, eat."

Wei Xiyin had already calmed down by this time. Seeing him like this, she said in a gentle tone, "You eat, I'm not hungry." How could she have an appetite in such hot weather?

"Oh." Wei Lang didn't think much about it. After getting the response, he immediately picked up the chopsticks and started eating.

He looked as if he had been hungry for several days.

Wei Xiyin shook her head repeatedly upon seeing this, and sat down next to him to serve him the food, "Eat slowly."
