Chapter 23 Outside the Fort

Wei Xiyin's heart was beating violently.

Previously, due to the obstruction of view by buildings inside the fortress, people could only see the monsters on one street or the entire square at a glance, and could not see all of them.

In addition, when the plan was originally formulated, she was only responsible for clearing out the remaining zombies in the castle, so she did not have a very intuitive feeling.

Now looking at the dense zombies below, Wei Xiyin's heart instantly covered with goose bumps. It was conceivable how much her guards had risked their lives to lead all these zombies out.

The two men stood on the wall, staring down in silence.

In front of the fortress, there are endless fields on both sides of the road across the moat. Those are the ancestral fields of the Wei family. Now the crops in the fields are leaning all over the place and have been ruined beyond recognition. Every piece of land is crowded with people, and zombies are staggering around in the fields.

In the moat below the wall, densely packed zombies were lying in the water, all still moving.

This scene makes one's scalp tingle.

Wei Xiyin calmed herself down before asking with trembling lips, "Did Uncle Seventh tell us the number of casualties in the fort?"

Chang Ying was silent for a moment, then replied, "The exact number hasn't been announced yet, but I heard from Qin Shan that there were still many caravans in the fort at the time of the incident. Not counting those outsiders, the number of casualties among our clan is probably no less than 3,000."

The total number of people infected by the troops and the Wei clan members exceeded fifteen thousand, not to mention the many servants and outsiders, or friends and relatives who came to visit.

Wei Xiyin immediately retracted her previous thoughts and said solemnly, "No, we can't let these zombies stay outside."

There were so many of them that she originally thought she could clean them up slowly, but she forgot that these zombies could survive in water.

Not only does the moat fail to serve as a barrier, it will also allow these zombies to further pollute the water source.

The river water has been polluted, and who knows whether the river water will seep into their well water through the ground.

If something happens to the well water, the consequences will be unimaginable.

The more Wei Xiyin thought about it, the more she felt that she couldn't delay any longer, so she decided to return home immediately to discuss countermeasures with her grandfather.

Seeing his sister leaving in a hurry, Wei Lang hurried to catch up, but Wei Xiyin told him to stay in the camp.

"Where's the long tasseled spear my sister gave you?"

"Take your weapons and train with the guards later."

Wei Xiyin hurriedly said a few words, left Wei Lang behind, and returned to the ancestral home alone.

When she came back, she happened to meet Wei Mingze at the door of her house.

"Seventh uncle." Wei Xiyin saluted quickly.

Seeing her hurried look, Wei Mingze asked with concern: "Wu Niang is so anxious, what happened?"

Wei Xiyin smiled bitterly and said, "I have something to discuss with my grandfather."

Wei Mingze didn't ask any more questions after hearing this. He nodded and said, "It just so happens that I have something to ask the clan leader as well. You can come and listen too."

The two of them went to the main courtyard together.

Wei Ji was sitting in the corridor drinking tea. Seeing them come in together, he raised his eyelids and asked, "What's the matter?"

Wei Mingze saluted and said, "Headmaster, it's about the people Wu Niang and the others brought back. I want to cordon off Zuoxiang to house them."

Zuo Lane was originally the residence of the servants in the fortress, but now many houses are empty.

Wei Ji said: "You can make the decision on such a small matter yourself."

"Yes." Wei Mingze replied, glancing at Wei Xiyin before continuing, "But those people don't seem to have much food left. Wu Niang asked them to hand over ten kilograms of food each. The rest probably won't last long. My nephew is worried that they will cause trouble in the future."

Wei Mingze paused, then smiled and explained to Wei Xiyin, "This isn't to say Wu Niang is wrong. It's just that everyone is trapped in the fort right now. If we just give them food, then the ten kilograms of food Wu Niang collected earlier would have been wasted."

"If we don't take them, my nephew is afraid that they will starve to death in the fort, which will ruin our reputation. So I came to ask the clan leader for advice."

Wei Ji nodded. That was the truth. He turned to ask his granddaughter, "Wu Niang, do you have any solution?"

Wei Xiyin glanced at her grandfather, not understanding what he meant, but still replied, "The fort is in great need of people right now. Uncle Seventh can let those people work in exchange for relief."

Let them help with the work and use food as wages.

Wei Ji nodded with satisfaction and said with a smile, "Mingze, let's do it this way."

Wei Mingze also thought it was feasible and nodded in agreement.

"Also, regarding the water source issue," Wei Mingze continued, "in the past, the tribe used river water to wash and irrigate the fields, but now the river water is polluted, and the tribe only has a few wells for use. People have to queue up every day to draw water. My nephew thinks we should dig a few more wells..."

Wei Xiyin's eyelids twitched when she heard that. The water source was her biggest concern, so she simply asked, "Seventh Uncle, does the river pollution have any impact on the well water? The river water is so close, will it seep into the well through the ground?"

Wei Mingze's back stiffened and his expression changed instantly. He thought about it carefully and felt that it seemed very possible.

If the well water is contaminated and the tribesmen drink it without knowing it...

Wei Mingze's face turned pale and he said anxiously, "The drawings for digging the canal are still in Mingjing Hall. I'll get them right away." Then he left in a hurry.

Upon hearing this, Wei Ji sat up straight and his expression became very solemn.

Drinking water is related to the survival of the entire family and cannot be taken lightly.

After Wei Mingze left, Wei Xiyin immediately told him about the situation outside the fort.

"Grandfather, I think we must get rid of the zombies as soon as possible." Wei Xiyin pursed her lips tightly. "I was not thoughtful enough before. I didn't consider the impact of the zombies on the water source."
