The mountains were relatively safe during the day, so Wei Xiyin took Wei Lang out of the temple to get some fresh air. Not far away was a bare hillside, and standing on it, one could just see part of the scenery below.
Even from a distance, the vast expanses of land stained red with blood were still faintly visible.
Chang Ying personally led twenty guards down the mountain to get food.
The zombies wandering around the foot of the mountain had already been cleared out once by the guards who had gone down the mountain to explore.
The twenty guards were divided into groups of five and moved in turn, clearing out the scattered zombies outside while quietly approaching the post station.
Waited until outside the post station.
Chang Ying gestured, and one of the groups of people quietly came to the back door of the post station, stood close to the wall, and looked through the open door to see what was happening inside.
A large number of infected monsters then came into view, each covered in blood and with mutilated limbs, looking extremely terrifying.
The monsters were staggering aimlessly in the yard. In addition to the post station soldiers and miscellaneous servants, there were also many companions wearing the same clothes as themselves.
When a guard saw this scene, his eyes turned red and he clenched the knife in his hand tightly.
The monster near the door seemed to have noticed something. It sniffed around with its nose, then moved forward slowly towards the door while sniffing.
As expected, as the investigation showed, the speed of these monsters became very slow.
Chang Ying remained calm and waited patiently for them to approach.
When the monster reached the door, he gave a gesture and the guards immediately raised their swords and cleanly killed the monster in front of them.
Even though many of them were former companions.
After clearing out the zombies at the door, the guards began to enter the inn. While clearing out the monsters, they approached the place where the luggage was stored and soon arrived at the door of the room.
The guards were well-trained and took turns carrying food and preparing to evacuate along the same route.
"Commander..." Cheng Xiu suddenly spoke, calling out to Chang Ying who was about to go upstairs.
He pointed at the bodies of his companions and pleaded sadly, "I want to bury them and let them rest in peace."
Upon hearing this, the others also requested, "Please allow me, Commander."
The dozens of guards lying on the ground were all brothers who had been through life and death together. They were comrades-in-arms and also relatives.
Chang Ying looked at the familiar faces on the ground and was silent for a long time before he said, "Let's transport the food up the mountain first, and then the brothers will send them off together later." As he said that, he turned and went upstairs, not wanting anyone to see his slightly red eyes.
In the room upstairs where Wei Xiyin had stayed, her luggage was placed on the cabinet against the wall, and some of the items that had been taken out were scattered everywhere. In addition to some spare clothes, there were also some personal items that the siblings often used.
Chang Ying packed up the belongings of his two masters, put them on his back, and returned with his guards.
After two or three trips, twenty people finally transported all the food up the mountain.
Chang Ying then suggested to Wei Xiyin that he wanted to give his dead companions a proper burial.
Upon hearing this, Wei Xiyin immediately stood up and said softly, "I'll go down the mountain with you."
Those guards died to protect her and her brother, so it was only right that she should send them on their way.
As she said this, she called Wei Lang over despite Chang Ying's objection.
Wei Lang had also participated in some funerals in Kyoto, so he immediately understood what his sister said. "I know. I will tell the King of Hell and ask him to choose a good family for them."
Some of the guards around him couldn't hold back their tears, and tears dripped down their cheeks. They quickly lowered their heads for fear of being seen.
Chang Ying saw this and stopped trying to stop him.
The group went down the mountain together and buried the dead guards at the foot of the mountain.
Wei Lang helped dig the pit, muttering to himself, "Lord Yama, they are all good people. You must help them find a good family and make them rich and powerful in their next life..."
Wei Xiyin turned around and went to the roadside to pick some wild flowers, and put them in front of each grave. She stared at the tombstones carved from simple stone slabs and stood there for a long time without saying a word.
Human life was worthless in this dynasty. During the years of famine, as long as you gave them a meal and a place to stay, countless people might be willing to die for you.
But Wei Xiyin had received higher education and lived in a peaceful era where everyone was equal. She could not completely ignore the sacrifices of these people and accept with peace of mind that they gave their lives for her.
She stared at the names on the tombstone and said silently in her heart, "In the next life, I hope you can be reborn into an era of peace and prosperity where you don't have to worry about food and clothing."
"Girl, it's getting late. We should go back to the temple." Seeing that it was getting dark, Chang Ying spoke.
Night means danger.
Wei Xiyin nodded when she heard that, and pulled Wei Lang back to the mountain.
At this moment, the guard behind him suddenly shouted: "Who is it?! Come out!"
The guards immediately drew their swords and protected the Wei siblings in the middle.
In the distant woods, a head suddenly popped out from behind a tall cypress tree. Seeing the momentum of this group of people, it was so scared that it quickly shrank back.
Then more heads popped up, and judging by their clothes, they looked like villagers from nearby.
When they saw that it was a living person, the villagers suddenly realized what had happened and ran towards this side as if they had seen a savior, some of them even shouting for help.
The guards also put down their knives, but remained vigilant.
Wei Xiyin glanced at the villagers, then at the sky. "It's getting dark, let's go up the mountain first. If they want to follow, let them follow."
The villagers behind him did not hesitate and hurried to follow.
Wei Xiyin and others returned to the temple safely. The small, dilapidated temple only had one room. The guards blocked the door and did not allow the villagers to approach.
