Chapter 49 Lack of Medicinal Materials

The drawbridge slowly lowered.

Wei Xiyin and the others felt relaxed as they were finally home. They no longer had to worry about zombies that might appear at any time, nor did they have to shiver in the wind and snow and endure the cold.

Seeing the cheering guards on the city wall and the tribesmen who came to greet them, Wei Xiyin felt that although this trip was hard, it was worth it.

After not seeing him for many days, she saw the familiar face again and she could understand her grandfather's thoughts more and more.

Because this is her home, her roots, and these people are her relatives, all of whom are of the same bloodline. No matter how difficult the environment is, as long as people's hearts remain together, she firmly believes that life will get better.

After everyone entered the fort, the tribesmen immediately surrounded the brother and sister and asked about their situation.

"Wu Niang has suffered a lot." An elder asked with concern, "Did you encounter any danger on this trip?"

Wei Xiyin's heart warmed, and she replied, "Fortunately, everything went smoothly. We found a hundred carts of food outside, enough for the fort to last the entire winter."

The tribesmen were startled and only then noticed that the hundreds of wooden oxen and horses were piled high with grain.

Before anyone could cheer, Wei Li's face changed. "You only found food? Where are the medicinal herbs?"

Suddenly, there was complete silence all around.

Wei Xiyin noticed that the atmosphere was not right and asked hurriedly: "What's wrong? Is someone in the clan sick?"

The tribesmen around looked at each other, not knowing how to tell her.

Wei Li was silent for a moment, his eyes dimming, "It's the clan leader..."

Before he could finish his words, Wei Xiyin's face turned pale, and she turned around and ran home without caring about anything.

Seeing this, Wei Lang also ran after his sister.

Wei Xiyin's head was buzzing and in a mess. She couldn't remember anything at the moment. She only knew that Wei Li said her grandfather was sick.

I’m sick…

How could you get sick when you were fine?

My grandfather was in such good health. He never got sick even after a long journey and walking thousands of miles under the scorching sun. He also never got sick when the clan encountered a disaster and monsters were rampant. Why did he get sick at this time?

Wei Xiyin disregarded etiquette and just left everyone behind and ran straight home.

The brother and sister ran all the way back to the old house. As soon as they entered the main courtyard, their eyes became red.

Uncle Wu at the door suddenly saw them and was startled at first, then he immediately came forward and asked, "What happened to Wu Niang and Er Lang?"

Wei Xiyin choked up and said, "Grandfather's illness..." Tears were about to fall as she spoke.

When Uncle Wu saw her like this, he immediately understood that Wu Niang might have already known the news.

He lowered his head and whispered, "The doctor has examined him. He said that he was exhausted after the long journey. He hadn't taken any proper care and had been trying to hold on. The temperature had dropped sharply recently, with alternating hot and cold weather, and he had caught a cold..."

In simple terms, it means not getting enough rest and overwork, which leads to decreased resistance and illness.

Uncle Wu saw that she looked unhappy and hurriedly comforted her, "Don't worry too much, young lady. The master of the house will be safe."

How could she not worry!

With today's medical conditions, a common cold can be fatal.

"Grandfather, do you have any medicine?" She remembered the scarcity of medicinal herbs in the fort before they set out, and Wei Li's reaction when he heard that they didn't bring back any.

Wei Xiyin immediately understood and raised her voice, "You knew that we were going to break into the granary to transport grain and it was impossible for us to bring back any medicinal herbs. Why didn't you send people out to look for them?" As Wei Ji's confidant, Uncle Wu could not have been unaware of this.

Uncle Wu bent down silently, enduring her anger, "It's the head of the family who won't allow it."

Wei Xiyin was furious. "Uncle Wu, you're called foolishly loyal, don't you know? Are you just going to leave it alone if Grandfather doesn't allow it?"

Her voice was so loud that it alarmed Wei Ji who was inside.

Wei Ji coughed twice and asked outside the house, "Is Wu Niang back?" His voice was indescribably weak.

Wei Xiyin felt uncomfortable listening to this. She took a deep breath, adjusted her emotions, and tried her best to control her voice from trembling. Then she slowly replied to the person inside the house, "Grandfather, it's my granddaughter who's back."

"Come in."

Wei Xiyin pushed open the door and immediately frowned. The doors and windows in the room were closed. There were several braziers in the corner for heating. The hot charcoal fire was burning, and clouds of smoke were rising.

It is warm, but in a closed indoor environment, burning charcoal will produce a large amount of carbon monoxide. If there is not enough oxygen, people will easily suffer from poisoning reactions.

Seeing this, she hurried forward and opened all the windows.

Uncle Wu was shocked: "Wu Niang, you can't do that! The master of the house has already caught a cold, how can we open the window? What if he catches a cold again?"

Wei Xiyin was still angry, angry that Uncle Wu was so loyal and inflexible that she was too lazy to explain to him.

After all the windows were opened, she hurriedly ordered the servants to remove all the braziers. After doing this, she slowly entered the inner room and walked to the bed to visit her grandfather.

The old man on the bed had a thin face, a haggard expression, pale lips, and a pale complexion. His former majesty was gone.

Wei Lang followed behind his sister and saw that his grandfather had changed. He burst into tears out of fear, "Grandfather, are you angry with me for being like this? I will never dare to sneak away again next time, woooo ...

Wei Ji was both angry and amused when he saw him like this. He was angry that he ran away without saying anything, but also amused at the grandson's careless words. He supported himself on the edge of the bed and tried to sit up.

Seeing this, Wei Xiyin hurried forward to support him, picked up a cushion and placed it on his back for him to lean on.

This cushion was made for her when she was a child because she felt uncomfortable sitting on it. Later, her family members all found it useful, and it spread somehow and became popular in Beijing for a while.
