The hunters adopted Yu Bin's suggestion and formed a hunter group simply because the combination of the infectious virus and the eternal night made them realize that they would likely not survive if they fought alone. Only by relying on the strength of the group could they possibly wait for the support of the final fortress.
Their purpose is very simple.
That's all it takes to survive.
However, if any external factors hinder their progress toward survival, the hunters will undoubtedly remove the obstacle immediately to ensure that they can ultimately achieve their goal.
What Lu Ren is doing now is clearing away the obstacles.
He witnessed Old Zhang sprinkle gunpowder on the rats and then ignite it with a thunderbolt, turning the rats into fire rats and the rat plague into a fire disaster.
Regardless of whether Lao Zhang's intentions were good or bad, this action resulted in the death of half of the hunter group, and even nearly led to their complete annihilation. It greatly hindered the survival of the others. For both moral and rational reasons, Lu Ren had to eliminate these two people to stop the damage in time.
The other hunters, recalling what had just happened, were all terrified, and their eyes now held a clear murderous intent as they looked at Old Zhang and Fatty.
"Let's take them down!"
"Useless trash, only dragging things down!"
"Get away from me, lest the smell of blood attract the monster."
The hunters were enraged, and their calls to kill the two grew louder and louder.
Sun Muchen cautiously asked Wang Lan, "Brother, what do you think?"
“I’ll just stand here and watch,” Wang Lan said, rolling her eyes at her. “What these people are saying is true; those two are indeed a real drag on.”
Sun Muchen couldn't bear it, "But Fatty saved me before..."
“I saved him too. A life for a life, we’re even,” Wang Lan said, looking at Sun Muchen. “Put away your useless kindness and stop worrying about other people’s lives. Right now it’s Fatty and Old Zhang, but in the future it could be you and me. Don’t forget, this is the end of the world, a chaotic era. You need to face reality. We are not saviors, just people struggling to survive.”
After saying that, Wang Lan seemed to remember something else, "Oh right, come on, cover your eyes. It's better for a young lady to avoid watching scenes of dead people."
As Wang Lan reached out her hand, Sun Muchen slapped it away, saying, "Hey, it's not like I haven't seen this before."
Wang Lan shook his hand, thinking to himself, "Why does this girl seem to have gotten stronger?"
He turned his head away.
After hearing the other hunters' criticisms of Lao Zhang and Fatty, Lu Ren's eyes flashed with intense killing intent. He nodded vigorously to the crowd, then looked at Fatty and Lao Zhang with a cold smile.
"I will give you the quickest way to die, which is better than experiencing the pain of infection after being bitten by an infected person. However, you don't need to thank me."
As Lu Ren was speaking, Sun Muchen suddenly laughed and whispered to Wang Lan, "I don't think they'll die."
Wang Lan was taken aback. "Why?"
Sun Muchen said, “I read in a book that there is a law called ‘villains die from talking too much.’ Of course, that guy is not a villain, but often the killer has enough opportunities to kill the other party, but he insists on talking. As long as he opens his mouth, the victim will definitely not die.”
"There's such a law?" Wang Lan wondered. Just then, he heard Yu Bin shout, "Wait!"
Unexpectedly, Yu Bin rushed out, shoved Lu Ren aside, and quickly untied the iron chain from the fat man's neck, throwing it to Lu Ren.
Lu Ren frowned and asked, "What are you doing?"
Yu Bin said, "You can't kill him!"
Wang Lan was stunned, her face immediately filled with disbelief.
Yu Bin looked at everyone and said, "We must unite. We should fight side by side. Otherwise, we will all die in this eternal night. Only by uniting can we survive. Killing each other will only make us die faster!"
“Look,” Sun Muchen pointed at Yu Bin and said, “he didn’t die, did he?”
“Something’s not right…” Wang Lan said to Sun Muchen, “Although I don’t know much about Bin, I have heard some things about him. He’s a hunter who likes to chase the thrill of killing, and even roams the border wall to fight monsters outside for the thrill of killing. Do you think he would be kind enough to save someone?”
“I believe it,” Sun Muchen said. “The book says that people are inherently good at birth.”
"I don't really believe it..."
Wang Lan shook her head.
He had personally witnessed children in the safe zone stomping on ants, crushing them half to death with each step, leaving them struggling or fleeing on the ground, while the children would laugh happily.
I've also seen a child kick a palm-sized carrion beetle chick around like a ball until it was bloody and mangled before he was satisfied.
Wang Lan never believed that human nature is inherently good; otherwise, morality would not have become a mere formality in this chaotic world, and order would not have collapsed to the point of being irreparable.
Learning, in this context, is the process of correcting "evil."
Wang Lan believed that without Aunt Yang's guidance from childhood, and without his later encouragement of Sun Muchen's studies, the two of them might have been like the others in the safe zone, resorting to any means to survive, even if it meant eating raw meat and killing their families.
So he simply couldn't believe that someone like Yu Bin, who was almost addicted to killing, would choose to save people.
The hunters looked at Yu Bin protecting the two men with disbelief. They gripped their weapons, seemingly wanting to rush forward and kill Yu Bin as well.
But then Yu Bin drew his machete and said, “I can allow you to die in the mouths of the infected, but you absolutely cannot die at the hands of our own people. If you don’t give up the idea of killing them, you are standing on the opposite side of me.”
