Chapter Eighteen: The Livestock Farm of the Final Fortress

As the lights of the final fortress went out.

A new day has begun.

The fat man opened his eyes, yawned, stretched, and looked at Old Zhang beside him. "Hey, why do you have such dark circles under your eyes?"

"Shut up!"

Old Zhang replied irritably, thinking to himself, "You dead pig, you're sleeping soundly, but you have no idea I almost died."

He didn't sleep a wink last night, fearing that Wang Lan might not understand and rush out to kill him.

So he tossed and turned until dawn before he finally closed his eyes, but soon woke up again and couldn't fall back asleep.

The fat man, having made a fool of himself, didn't ask any more questions. He rubbed his face and stood up. At that moment, Wang Lan came out from the inner room.

Old Zhang immediately stood up, his face beaming, "You're awake, Wang Lan."

Wang Lan glanced at him and saw that apart from the two dark circles under his eyes that made him look tired, everything else seemed normal, as if nothing had happened last night. So she didn't waste any words and said directly, "You come with me to the livestock farm later. Fatty and Sun Muchen will stay here to watch the house."

Upon hearing Wang Lan's words, Old Zhang immediately understood that it was because of his actions last night that Wang Lan had misunderstood him, and the misunderstanding had obviously not been resolved.

And that was indeed the case. Between Lao Zhang and Fatty, Wang Lan was more inclined to believe Fatty. After all, during yesterday's battle, Wang Lan had seen Fatty's fearlessness in the face of sacrifice, while Lao Zhang's actions last night had greatly diminished Wang Lan's impression of him.

Regardless of whether the Golden Umbrella was actually disinfected, Wang Lan had become more wary of Lao Zhang.

When Sun Muchen came out, Wang Lan told him the plan, and then prepared to leave with Lao Zhang.

For this hunting trip, Wang Lan suggested leaving more bombs at home.

On the one hand, it was because Wang Lan had seen the benefits of blasting during yesterday's battle. Whether against people or animals, firearms are arguably the most effective and direct weapons.

On the other hand, it was also to guard against the possibility that Lao Zhang might have more ways to betray him.

Without delay, in order to avoid the reappearance of flying insects and birds, the two set off early.

Before leaving, Wang Lan reminded Fatty to help watch over Sun Muchen's studies and help him accumulate knowledge, reminding him that he should never forget to learn, no matter when or where.

This action naturally earned him a lot of eye-rolls from Sun Muchen.

So he and the fat man stood at the door to see the two off.

With the Vajra Umbrella slung over his back and a thick coat on his body, Wang Lan, after witnessing the teeth of the infected, didn't think a thick coat could offer him any protection. But Sun Muchen insisted that he wear it, saying it was an extra layer of protection and would make him safer.

Old Zhang also received a thick overcoat, but he still needed to carry a heavy iron lump weighing over 100 pounds to detonate mines. So, after walking only a short distance, he was exhausted and drenched in sweat, and wanted to take off his coat.

Wang Lan said, "Have you heard of Murphy's Law?"

Old Zhang was taken aback and asked, "What is that?"

Wang Lan explained, “My sister told me that if something is possible, no matter how small the possibility is, it will definitely happen. In other words, if you don’t take off your clothes, even if you die of heat, no one will be infected. But once you take them off, even if there are infected people all around you, an eagle will jump out and tear you to pieces!”

Old Zhang: "..."

Let's wear it then!

The livestock farm of the final fortress.

A grassy area built next to the final fortress, enclosed by a sturdy barbed wire fence.

The animals in the ranch are said to have been treated with a special drug by the final fortress, retaining their original appearance before the mutation and remaining unaffected by it. They are docile and have delicious meat.

The final fortress's meat supply comes entirely from livestock farms.

Because the people living in the final fortress are extremely picky about taste, and the animals affected by the mutation mostly have tough meat and taste terrible.

This doesn't align with the dietary philosophy of the people in the fortress—to eat well while also being full.

Wang Lan never understood what "fa chai" meant. He always thought that any meat other than human meat was a rare delicacy, and being able to eat it was a great blessing. Why bother with the taste?

The livestock farms of the final fortress are never to be entered by outsiders.

I heard that a long time ago, there was a man who was so hungry that he had no hunting skills, so he mustered up his courage and went to a livestock farm to steal meat, only to be discovered by the people of the final fortress.

Then it was shot and riddled with bullets, thrown into the market, and became food for flies and mosquitoes.

As the saying goes, fortune favors the bold. Although stealing the animals kept at the Final Fortress is extremely dangerous, it is currently the only place that can guarantee the animals will not be infected.

As Wang Lan and Lao Zhang walked, they got closer and closer to the fortress. They could vaguely see the dark outer wall of the fortress, which looked like a straight line extending far into the distance on both sides.

The livestock farm is on the other side of the fortress.

If we take the outer perimeter of the fortress that Wang Lan passed on his way to the market as a reference, the livestock farm is right across from him.

However, since the fortress covered a vast area, it was actually quite a distance from the livestock farm, so the two quickened their pace and walked around the outer wall.

Until I saw a patch of white against the outer wall, like a dull diamond embedded there, that was the livestock farm.

The livestock farm fence was ten meters high, and next to it was an iron platform of the same height as the fence, which served as a sentry post for the fortress to guard the livestock farm.

Because of what happened last night, the atmosphere between the two of them had been particularly oppressive throughout the journey. Now that they saw the glimmer of hope at the livestock farm, their oppressive mood eased somewhat. Old Zhang asked, "Have you ever eaten pork?"
