Chapter Seventy-One: The Past World

That night.

Wang Lan and Lao Zhang clinked glasses countless times.

Sun Muchen had no idea how much good food he had eaten.

Although the red wine had a low alcohol content, Old Zhang was still a little drunk.

Wang Lan, on the other hand, despite Lao Zhang's repeated advice that the liquor was strong and he shouldn't drink too much, otherwise the alcohol would make him dizzy and cause him to feel lightheaded, drank one cup after another without feeling drunk at all.

After much thought, it's possible that after he awakened his bloodline, he possessed a self-healing factor within his body, which directly neutralized the harm alcohol caused to his body after he drank the liquor.

Let's raise our glasses once more.

Old Zhang downed the wine in his glass in one gulp and said, "This is the difference between the final fortress and the outside world. Outside, people live like animals, always in danger. If you want a good meal, you have to risk your life to hunt. One wrong move and you're left to rot in the wilderness. But here, there's wine and meat, and life is comfortable..."

Listening to Old Zhang's lament, Sun Muchen asked curiously, "Was the world like this before the mutation?"

Old Zhang nodded and said, "Every household is like this, and there aren't so many ulterior motives among people. There is freedom and harmony everywhere, which is completely different from life in the safe zone."

As he spoke, Old Zhang looked at Sun Muchen and continued, "Do you know that in the world before the mutation, a girl your age should be in school studying, wearing pretty clothes, and eating delicious snacks? That's what a girl your age should be doing, not struggling to survive like this."

"Is that world really that wonderful?" Sun Muchen asked, resting his head on his hand, completely puzzled. "Sigh, although I've read about that world in books, I could never really imagine it. Now that you've told me, it really does seem wonderful..."

Looking at Sun Muchen's hopeful expression, Wang Lan had a sudden thought and asked Old Zhang, "Do you think it's possible for us to return to the world before the mutation?"

"I think...maybe."

Old Zhang said, "Don't think that humans are weak. They may not be as strong as other animals in terms of physical strength, but the human brain is the strongest weapon. Humans are intelligent and can think. As long as we find the source of the mutation and control it, with the existing resources, it is only a matter of time before we can return to the state before the mutation."

"But..." Sun Muchen said with a hint of melancholy, "What if we're left with just the three of us...?"

“No,” Old Zhang said. “There may only be three of us left in this safe zone, but I believe there are still many survivors outside.”

At this moment, Old Zhang's gaze suddenly became incredibly firm: "As long as we can find them and unite everyone, we will definitely be able to turn the tide!"

"Yes, we can definitely turn the world back to how it was before!"

Inspired by what Lao Zhang said, Sun Muchen raised his fist and made a bold statement.

Seeing Sun Muchen's expression, Wang Lan felt as if she had made a decision and nodded in agreement.

Then he looked at Old Zhang and said, "After entering the final fortress, you're like a completely different person."

“Has it changed…” Old Zhang gave a wry smile. “This fortress does give me a very familiar feeling, but… I’d rather be familiar with the world of the past.”

Wang Lan asked curiously, "You seem to know a lot about the world of the past."

“I wouldn’t say I understand,” Old Zhang pointed to his head, looking suspicious. “Actually, it’s a very interesting feeling. I can’t even say where I learned about the past world. It’s like it… has always existed in my mind.”

At this point, Wang Lan suddenly remembered the scene that the system had appeared on, and he asked, "Have you seen this thing before?"

As he spoke, he dipped his finger in water and drew the white-bordered blackboard he had seen before.

Old Zhang looked completely bewildered. He watched as Wang Lan drew a large rectangle, then a smaller rectangle from within it, until at the bottom where the two rectangles overlapped, Wang Lan drew several strange symbols. Old Zhang suddenly realized, "Are you drawing a television?"

Sun Muchen was taken aback and also got up to look over. After Wang Lan finished drawing all the symbols, Sun Muchen was stunned. "It really does look like a television! Brother, how do you know it's a television?"

Sun Muchen had read about television sets in a book, and it was exactly the same as what Wang Lan was drawing. But the problem was, Wang Lan had never seen a television set before, so how could he draw it?

Wang Lan looked puzzled. "A television set? What's a television set?"

Old Zhang said, "It's a device that uses electronic technology to transmit images, videos, and audio data. Through television, you can see many things that you can't see directly."

Old Zhang chuckled, "If I didn't recognize the rectangle you drew at first, these symbols made me absolutely certain. But how did you know it was a television? These things are rare, not even in the final fortress, let alone in the safe zone. No, whether a television even exists is another matter!"

"I..." Wang Lan hesitated, seemingly lost in thought.

Then he looked at Sun Muchen, who also said in surprise, "Yeah, brother, when have you ever seen a television set?"

The two men's statements are consistent.

It seems that the blackboard with a white border that I saw in the system really is a television.

In other words, the images he saw came from the television.

But... why am I seeing a TV in the system?

Wang Lan was completely baffled.

Seeing that Wang Lan was lost in thought and didn't answer, Sun Muchen was about to press her for an answer when Old Zhang clapped his hands to stop him, saying, "Alright, I guess your brother's had too much to drink. You won't get anything out of him even if you ask. Go to sleep."

Old Zhang staggered to his feet and walked toward the largest bedroom, saying as he went, "I'm going to sleep now. I've had too much to drink. You guys should get some rest too. It's finally a bit peaceful now, I'm going to sleep until I naturally wake up."

Wang Lan only then came to her senses, as if waking from a dream. Sun Muchen leaned over and asked, "Brother, have you had too much to drink?"

Wang Lan shook her head and said dejectedly, "I didn't drink too much, I'm just a little tired. You should go to sleep early too."

"oh…"

Seeing his reaction, Sun Muchen didn't ask any further questions, simply nodded, and headed upstairs to the small pink bedroom.

Wang Lan finished the rest of the wine in her glass and went to lie down on the sofa.

This was the most comfortable place he had ever been.

Wang Lan lay on the sofa, pretending to doze off.

Suddenly the door was pushed open, and a figure rushed in, shouting, "I, I am the resident of the fortress... Ah!"

The figure was only halfway through his sentence when Wang Lan threw a dagger that struck him squarely between the eyebrows.

Wang Lan was taken aback, sat up from the sofa, and belatedly muttered to herself, "Uh...it's a living person?"

He hurried over, only to find the man looking horrified and dead. Wang Lan sighed, drew his dagger, shook his head, and said, "Alas... wine doesn't intoxicate, people intoxicate themselves."

With that, he picked up the corpse by the foot and threw it far away…
