Chapter Sixty-Two: Knocking on the Door

The carpet bombing of the final fortress continued, and no one knew how much stockpile they had; the bullets seemed inexhaustible.

"With this kind of fighting style, who can withstand it!" Old Zhang shouted excitedly. "Even if more monsters come, they'll all die here. The Final Fortress is really amazing!"

That's really impressive...

Wang Lan did not deny this at all. After all, he had seen the power of bullets, which were weapons that ordinary people could not withstand. The high-density and high-intensity suppression of the final fortress was truly a devastating blow!

Wang Lan couldn't understand why, if this force was devastating, they couldn't defeat the mutated monsters when the anomaly occurred. These monsters were originally just ordinary animals; there was no reason why they were forced to flee and hide, routed, and ultimately forced to rely on building survivor cities to survive.

Just as Wang Lan was puzzled, other voices rang out.

From the dense but orderly "da da da" sound, a muffled "dong! dong! dong!" sound suddenly rang out. A moment later, a sound like a thunderclap followed.

Old Zhang's face was filled with boundless joy. "This, this is a howitzer! That's amazing! They actually used a howitzer!"

However, Wang Lan and Sun Muchen, the brother and sister, looked puzzled.

But listening to the deafening explosions outside the umbrella, and smelling the pungent stench of gunpowder with every breath, one can only imagine what kind of scene it must be.

Perhaps they were riddled with bullets and then blasted to smithereens by howitzers!

As Sun Muchen thought this, he suddenly felt a pang of pity for those monsters.

Then, at that moment, they suddenly heard the sound of an explosion that caused the earth to crumble. It turned out that a howitzer had hit the outer wall of the fortress behind them, and huge rocks from the broken wall were about to fall down, burying them.

...

I don't know how much time has passed.

The gunfire finally stopped, and it was as if the whole world had fallen silent.

The outer walls of the final fortress had completely disappeared, and the air was filled with the stench of gunpowder and burnt flesh and fur, which was nauseating. The ground was a mess, with the blood and bits of flesh of animals stained black by the smoke and dust of the explosion, mixed with the original red of the blood, creating a scene of purgatory.

On this plain, only an egg-shaped building stands there alone.

Several voices came from a pile of rubble.

Old Zhang spoke first: "Wang Lan, are you sure you can push these stones open? They're completely immovable, so incredibly heavy!"

"Why...why...can't!"

Wang Lan pushed the stone upwards with all his might, but he didn't know why the stone was so heavy. Even though he tried his best, he couldn't move it an inch.

"It's all over, it's all over..."

Old Zhang looked utterly desperate. "Now that the monster hasn't eaten us, we're going to suffocate and starve to death."

"What nonsense are you spouting!"

Wang Lan cursed, took a deep breath, raised his hands above his head, braced them against the stone, gritted his teeth, and suddenly exerted force, as if trying to push the stone away with a burst of strength. But suddenly he felt the stone lighten, as if an invisible force rushed out from the ground beneath his feet, and the stone pressing on them flew away in all directions.

This scene left Old Zhang stunned. He opened his mouth wide, stammering but unable to utter a single word.

"Brother, let's go quickly!"

Sun Muchen nudged Wang Lan, who also looked puzzled.

The two of them came to their senses one after the other. Sun Muchen continued, "Don't assume that all those monsters died here. I estimate that quite a few escaped. Be careful they don't come back."

Wang Lan nodded, then, as if remembering something, said, "But is it safe for us to walk across like this?"

“It should be fine,” Old Zhang said. “I think the defense mechanism of this final fortress is triggered by ground sensing. Only when the ground receives a certain amount of gravity feedback will the fortress start to fight back.”

After thinking about it carefully, Wang Lan realized that there was some truth to what he said, so he didn't say anything more, and the three of them quickly ran towards the main gate of the final fortress.

Although the path was not long, it was extremely difficult to walk on. Due to the heavy bombing earlier, the asphalt surface was gone, exposing the soil beneath. Many animals had died here, their blood flowing like a river, causing even more of it to seep into the ground. So, walking on it was incredibly sticky and muddy.

After a great deal of effort, the three finally arrived at the gate of the final fortress.

Once this door opens, it means they will come back to life.

Old Zhang volunteered to take on the task of knocking on the door, because he said it was better for an older person to handle such matters.

He was smiling and straightening his tattered clothes, seemingly taking the ritual of knocking on the door very seriously.

After making ample preparations, Old Zhang raised his hand, half-clenching his fist, ready to knock on the door.

However……

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

But Sun Muchen, impatient with his dawdling, punched the door three times and shouted, "Is anyone there?"

Old Zhang, "..."

Wasn't I the one knocking on the door?

Are you digging for food?

After a while, no one responded.

Sun Muchen glanced back at Wang Lan, who frowned and said, "Continue!"

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

Three more punches.

Wang Lan also began searching around the gate for any unusual mechanisms, but after searching for a long time, she found nothing.
