Chapter Thirty-Nine: Fire Rat

This bizarre sudden situation caused both the hunters and the carcass birds present to stop. Animals are naturally better at anticipating danger than humans, so the moment they stopped, they flapped their wings and took off, quickly leaving the area, leaving the hunters steadying themselves and looking at each other in bewilderment.

"Danger!"

One of the hunters shouted.

"Damn it, can't the idiot see the danger?!"

Some of the hunters were also swearing.

Wang Lan was about to leave with Sun Muchen when the tremors on the ground suddenly intensified. Several muffled thuds were heard, and the ground around them inexplicably exploded, creating craters. Sand and gravel were blasted into the air from the craters, and at the same time, the ground beneath their feet collapsed.

The sudden turn of events caused everyone to lose their footing, and some even fell to the ground. Wang Lan and Sun Muchen helped each other up and managed to steady themselves, but then they heard a series of rapid and excited squeaking noises.

One by one, gray heads poked out of the burrow, fluttering and rapidly looking around, their white eyes scanning the hunter.

The hunters immediately felt a chill run down their spines.

They weren't unfamiliar with rats; as the rulers of the underworld, rats had never been absent in any era. And with the occurrence of the mutation, their bodies underwent a qualitative leap, becoming even more powerful.

Even so, rats will not attack humans unless they are in danger or have plenty of food.

Of course, it's different if you get infected with a contagious virus.

At this moment, more and more rats emerged from their burrows, their squeaking and chattering filling the air. The savory aroma of living human flesh made them drool.

As the number of rats increased, reaching at least eighty to a hundred, all the hunters present swallowed hard, because their current position was far from ideal. They were right in the middle of the collapsed area, surrounded by rats on all sides.

Wang Lan was also dizzy from watching, and the rats kept running out of their burrows, their numbers constantly increasing. He wondered how spectacular the scene would be when the entire rat army was assembled.

But it was clear that the rats, who were in the vanguard, couldn't wait any longer. They stared at the different species on the field, eager to try their luck.

Similarly, the hunters didn't want to wait any longer.

Waiting any longer would only exacerbate the danger.

Wang Lan and Yu Bin exchanged a glance, communicated with each other, and then nodded.

The hunters grabbed their weapons.

Wang Lan looked at Old Zhang not far away and said, "Get the bomb ready. Light it, count to four, and throw it out. We need to run the moment it explodes!"

"Okay!" Old Zhang nodded repeatedly. He was so scared by the rat that his limbs went weak. Hearing Wang Lan's command, he took out the bomb without saying a word. But who knew that a rat would suddenly squeak out.

Old Zhang was startled and jolted so hard that he lost his grip on the bomb, which rolled and fell to the ground. He reacted quickly and reached out to grab it, but he missed and the bomb continued to fall close to his hand.

Old Zhang was stunned. He subconsciously raised his foot to kick the thunderbolt, but unexpectedly kicked it back by accident. He reached out and grabbed the thunderbolt.

"Ha!" Old Zhang let out a strange roar of relief, but before he could finish speaking, he heard the squeaking of the rats suddenly become louder.

Immediately following was Wang Lan's shout of cursing, "I'll f*** your mother!"

Old Zhang shuddered. It turned out that his action of catching the thunderbolt had completely alarmed the rat swarm, and now the rats were rushing towards them like madmen.

Wang Lan grabbed Sun Muchen and ran outside without a second thought, no longer caring about Lao Zhang and Fatty, and even wishing they would die there.

These two troublemakers are more likely to cause trouble than to accomplish anything.

He wielded the Vajra Umbrella, slashing and hacking to clear a path for the charging rats. But compared to creatures like the Corpse-Pecking Bird, the rats seemed to have a much stronger will to live. Even though Wang Lan used all his strength in each of his umbrella strikes, the rats that were knocked away would simply roll over and charge back up again, their attacks becoming increasingly fierce.

Indeed, rats have always been the most hated species, regardless of the era.

Old Zhang and Fatty were in a terrible predicament. Facing the rats that were almost knee-high, they were completely helpless and could only dodge. But the rats were incredibly fast. They hadn't dodged many times before one of the rats came crashing into them and knocking them to the ground. They were almost bitten.

Old Zhang quickly got up, because looking at the rats from his lying position was even more terrifying. They looked like giant beasts rampaging around, and the sense of oppression increased dramatically. But in his panic, Old Zhang had a sudden inspiration. He saw the rats' shiny gray fur and thought to himself, "Why not use gunpowder to burn these monsters to death?"

Thinking of this, Old Zhang immediately got excited and called on Fatty to start disassembling the grenades, then threw them at the rats. In no time, the rats attacking them were covered in gunpowder.

Wang Lan saw this scene but didn't understand what the two were trying to do. He assumed they had given up and were waiting to die. In that moment of distraction, several large rats rushed over. By the time Wang Lan came to his senses, the rats had already opened their mouths and were biting at his ankles.

Wang Lan shuddered, and cold sweat poured down her back. Sun Muchen, standing beside her, paled and screamed.

But just then, a white light flashed before his eyes and then fell straight down, landing right next to Wang Lan's feet. Only then did Wang Lan see that it was Yu Bin who had returned, holding a machete to block the rat's open mouth. Then, with a twist of the blade, he slashed forward and cut the rat in half.

Thank you!

Wang Lan nodded and grabbed Sun Muchen, ready to run away.

Yu Bin was taken aback. He hadn't expected Wang Lan to say "thank you" so readily, and he certainly hadn't expected her to leave right after thanking him. It seemed that her "thank you" was completely insincere.

However, he seemed indifferent and turned to save Old Zhang and Fatty. Suddenly, a violent explosion rang out, deafeningly loud. It sounded like a thunderclap and was not far from him. Accompanying it was the squeaking of rats, which was violent and chaotic.

When Yu Bin turned his head, he saw several rats that had been blown into the air and were now falling down. Strangely, the flames from the explosion easily ignited the rats' fur. The rats were now like speeding fireballs, and the burning pain made them even more agitated, running around even faster.

Old Zhang looked bewildered and said, "Old...Old Zhang, have we gotten ourselves into trouble?"
