Chapter Twenty-Six: No Next Time

If the white gas initially released from the meteorite caused the first global impact and the first major anomaly, then...

So this state, where the creature's appearance changes drastically, yet it remains neither dead nor alive, and only knows how to attack and bite, can definitely be called a second mutation!

Wang Lan finally understood that sentence.

In today's world of global evolution, we must be extra careful of all species other than humans!

He probably only heard the vulture's mournful cry for a second, followed by the terrifying sound of piranhas tearing flesh apart in a dense mass, a sound that made one's heart ache.

Then, a thunderbolt flew out from the side and landed in the piranha school, exploding with a loud bang!

At this moment, Old Zhang hurriedly shouted, "What are you standing there for! Run!"

Wang Lan and Sun Muchen seemed to wake from a dream, turned around and helped each other leave.

But the explosion and the two men's movements also attracted the attention of the piranha swarm. The shadow spread out rapidly, revealing the vulture that had been swallowed earlier, but now only a skeleton remained. Wang Lan's dagger could be seen stuck in the skull's eye socket, and several piranhas were greedily gnawing on the remaining flesh and blood on the bones.

Old Zhang quickly stepped back, then pulled out a grenade and held it in his hand, ready to go. As Wang Lan and the others walked past, he shouted, "Take Fatty with you, I'll cover the rear!"

"good!"

Wang Lan readily agreed, and she and Sun Muchen helped the fat man away.

Old Zhang: "..."

He had no choice but to grit his teeth, turn around, and scatter the gunpowder from the grenade in front of him and ignite it.

The bright flames emitted a pungent stench, deterring the piranhas from approaching. But Old Zhang's eyes were filled with unwavering determination. He pulled out a grenade and threw it, blasting the piranhas to pieces and clearing a path for them.

Old Zhang took a deep breath and rushed forward.

...

Wang Lan and the others had run far enough away that they were completely in the darkness. The sound of the explosion could only be faintly heard by them, but the sound of the piranhas was incessant, hissing and never stopping, as if they were following closely behind.

Wang Lan wanted to speed up, but unfortunately, the fat man's leg injury was too severe, and he couldn't run fast at all. He could only stagger along, which was a huge burden.

The explosions behind them were no longer audible. Perhaps they had run far enough away, or perhaps Old Zhang was already dead, his bones devoured by the piranhas, and the piranha swarm continued its advance, catching up sooner or later.

Piranhas are numerous, small in size, and highly destructive. Their danger level is even greater than that of birds and beasts. Moreover, they have now evolved limbs, making them even more difficult to deal with. Wang Lan would never encounter them unless absolutely necessary, so running away is the best option at the moment.

But... the injured fat man undoubtedly became a burden.

In that short time, Wang Lan had figured everything out.

In order for himself and Sun Muchen to survive, he had to give up the fat man!

Although the fat man saved Sun Muchen's life and never had any ill intentions, morality and kindness cannot keep a person alive, let alone help them through chaotic times.

There is no inherent definition of right and wrong.

Moreover, in chaotic times, the sole purpose is simply to survive, nothing more.

So he silently placed his hand on the Vajra Umbrella.

It's better for him to kill the fat man than for the fat man to die in the mouth of piranhas and suffer the pain of being torn apart and eaten. This can be considered as repaying the fat man for protecting Sun Muchen.

But then Sun Muchen suddenly spoke up, "Brother!"

The single word is powerful and concise.

Wang Lan knew Sun Muchen's personality and also knew what she meant by calling him "brother".

At this moment, the fat man seemed to sense something and said, "Wang Lan, I know I'm a burden to you now, but please, for the sake of me being injured while protecting Sun Muchen, don't abandon me!"

You're overthinking it!

Wang Lan said firmly, "I swear on my integrity that I have never thought of abandoning you, because we are allies!"

After saying that, he patted him hard on the shoulder and continued.

"No next time!"

The fat man was taken aback. "What...what are you doing?"

Sun Muchen was silent for a few seconds after hearing this, then said, "Yes!"

The fat man's expression was strange. "Choking...choking to death?"

Wang Lan shoved him hard, then stopped in her tracks, drawing her Vajra Umbrella and shouting, "The fish are catching up! Protect Sun Muchen and go!"

He had already heard strange noises behind him, but unlike the hissing of the piranhas, it sounded more like the sound of a light object bouncing and landing.

So he wondered if the piranhas had undergone some kind of evolution and had mastered the technique of jumping.

He opened the Vajra Umbrella to shield himself, and then heard something hit the leaves of the Vajra Umbrella, making a crisp "snap snap snap" sound.

Just as expected!

Wang Lan was absolutely certain of her thoughts.

Piranhas have evolved limbs that can support their bodies to jump, which makes them much more dangerous. Moreover, as they keep crashing into the umbrella leaves, Wang Lan noticed that both the force and the frequency of the impacts were gradually increasing.

The piranhas have gotten stronger!

Their main force arrived shortly afterward!

Wang Lan knew very well that he could not continue to sit and wait for death. Otherwise, when the piranha swarm arrived in full force, his fate would be no worse than that of the corpse-pecking birds. But at this moment, the night was dark and visibility was poor, and he really had no other choice.

Just then, Wang Lan suddenly felt a sharp pain in his back. A piranha had circled around to his back and jumped onto it, tearing at his flesh with ferocity and greed. The pain was excruciating. Wang Lan could not bear it any longer and screamed as he reached back and grabbed the piranha!
