Chapter Ten Battle
The two cars were parked deep in the poplar grove, their bodies covered by fallen leaves and branches, forming an inconspicuous mound.
Zhao Bohan, whose ears were still ringing, and Su Qingran stayed by the car, while the remaining four split into two groups and made their way to a hillside overlooking the service area.
Of course, it's still very far away; you can only see it with a telescope.
Zhuang Xiao's sensory enhancement value is 7, and his farsightedness is comparable to a 4x scope. He and Yu Shuang are at the forefront.
Qi An and Tang Long were on a small hill further back, mainly serving as lookouts and backup.
They were all dressed in brownish-yellow field camouflage, with hand-woven straw rings on their heads. Two groups of four people lay prone on the ground, practically a piece of skin on the hillside.
Yu Shuang's voice came through the earpiece: "Holy crap! This isn't just a stronghold, it's a sentry post!"
These words startled everyone, and Zhao Bohan immediately asked, "What makes you think it's a sentry post?"
"Another convoy is coming, and we're stopping them for inspection! Hiss... They're touching so closely, they might find our tracking devices!"
These words startled everyone again.
Yu Shuang quickly checked the tablet herself.
Although their locators were second-hand and assembled, they had everything you needed, and apart from being a bit bigger, they were more reliable than the ones sent from the base.
The locator is equipped with a pressure sensing system that will send an alarm to a remotely connected device if it is touched.
The device did not sound an alarm, and the red dot had moved again, indicating that the convoy had passed the checkpoint and was proceeding again.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, but this also meant that the team could not continue the pursuit, because there must be a large-scale stronghold behind the checkpoint, and continuing the pursuit would be a waste of time.
Zhuang Xiao moved forward a bit, peering through the sniper rifle's scope, and clicked his tongue, saying, "There's a sheepfold at the foot of the mountain, no wonder there's such a dense heat source. Judging by the number of sheep, there are quite a few sentry bugs here, at least 50 or more!"
The checkpoint was manned and the inspection was thorough. The fact that two convoys passed by in such a short time further illustrates the large scale and strategic importance of the stronghold behind the checkpoint.
Qi An also had some visibility, and he and Tang Long took turns using binoculars to observe.
The sun gradually dipped below the tips of the western mountains, and the last rays of the setting sun were fading away.
Yu Shuang and Zhuang Xiao changed to a new observation point, which was less concealed but offered a better view.
The reconnaissance opportunity was rare, and they tried to determine the model of the machine gun mounted on the balcony of the two-story building in order to further assess the strength of this wave of fallen insects.
But Qi An's voice suddenly came through the earpiece: "Captain, it seems like there are Fallen Insects approaching us!"
Zhuang Xiao's back stiffened slightly: "Huh?"
Yu Shuang immediately pressed her earpiece against the headphones, "Which direction? How many? How far away?"
Tang Long was also startled and subconsciously tried to take the binoculars from Qi An's hand to take a look.
But Qi An didn't give it to him.
In reality, there was nothing in the telescope; she was looking in the direction of jagged rocks.
She concluded that a fallen insect was approaching purely because of that inexplicable feeling!
Qi An understood a little. It seemed that as long as the time and space were close enough, such as now, or within a kilometer, if there were polluters, her senses would be extremely strong, and she could practically trace their movement in her mind!
She closed her eyes for a moment, then said, “At the 9 o’clock position, on the hillside, there are two fallen insects, about 600 meters away from us. Your position should be obstructed, making it difficult to observe them.”
Yu Shuang glanced back and saw only rocks and bushes in the direction Qi An had indicated.
But now she trusts Qi An much more, so she directly pulled Zhuang Xiao up and moved her to a rocky blind spot where she could observe others but others could hardly see her.
When she set up the telescope again, she indeed saw what appeared to be tentacled creatures among the rocks.
"It's definitely there!" Zhuang Xiao detected it with his exceptional eyesight and keen sense of smell, and crouched even lower. "Hide or run?"
Yu Shuang took another look.
The fallen insect had moved out of the rocky area, its form now fully exposed.
There were indeed two, one in front of the other, walking at a leisurely pace, their tentacles casually sweeping across the withered grass, their eyes moving randomly all over their bodies.
With just one glance, Yu Shuang could tell that the two fallen insects weren't coming for them; they were probably on patrol and hadn't spotted them yet!
However, Qi An and Tang Long's positions were quite dangerous; if they moved even slightly, they would definitely be detected.
Yu Shuang hesitated for only half a second. She put the scope on the rifle and said to Zhuang Xiao, "I'll snipe the one in front, and you snipe the one behind. Make sure the sniping interval is no more than 2 seconds."
"Yes." This was a formal order, and Zhuang Xiao's baby face immediately fell silent.
The dark gun barrel rose from the grass, startling a small mouse that was foraging for food.
The two fallen insects were walking down the mountain, heading towards Qi An and the others. One of their tentacles narrowed its eye slightly, staring at Tang Long's enormous body and tactical backpack.
But the next second, the slightly shiny cyst-like tissue on the forehead of the fallen insect was pierced by an armor-piercing bullet.
It was as if it had passed through a rotten tomato; the dark green juice splattered, and the worm collapsed.
The moment he fell, another bullet pierced the head of his comrade behind him.
Two short, sharp cries merged into one, drowned out by the evening breeze.
Qi An and Tang Long sprang to their feet and turned to run down the mountain.
There were two more fallen insects, but they were farther away. One was at least a kilometer away, and the other was very vague to Qi An, possibly on the other side of the mountain.
Su Qingran and Zhao Bohan had already driven and could reach the foot of the mountain in 5 minutes to meet them, so all they needed to do was run.
They must not be discovered by the other two fallen insects. If they are discovered, they will use their far-reaching sonic language to notify the service area outpost, and they will likely be in grave danger!
However, the full set of field equipment weighed 40 kilograms. Although Qi An had the lightest equipment in the team, she herself only weighed 43 kilograms. Running down the mountain with such a heavy load would have killed her!
Tang Long had already run dozens of meters away when he looked back and saw Qi An still struggling. He was taken aback.
He had never seen a soldier with such poor physical fitness.
"Carry her!" Yu Shuang's figure flashed past, leaving behind those words.
Tang Long suddenly realized something, turned around, and hoisted Qi An onto his shoulder.
Qi An almost vomited up his compressed rations from lunch, but it was indeed fast. In just five minutes, they had already reached the foot of the mountain!
There was a faint, shrill roar behind them, as if the fallen insect in the distance had finally discovered them!
