Chapter Thirty-One: An Unparalleled War
The team members lined up orderly in the traffic in front of the base gate.
At the checkpoint, multiple checkpoints verified their identities and mission information, checked their contamination levels, and thoroughly searched the equipment in their three vehicles before finally allowing them to pass.
The view from inside the gate is even more spectacular.
There are still many high-rise buildings here that are over 20 stories tall, and those bright glass curtain walls that reflect the sunlight are simply dazzling!
What surprised everyone even more was that Yang Yuning, who looked as miserable as a homeless person when they first met him and later seemed like a sunny, naive boy, actually had a private car waiting for him!
That car was an ordinary family SUV, unlike a military vehicle or a transport vehicle, but more like a personal vehicle!
The middle-aged man waiting by the car was dressed casually and was not particularly noticeable. He wore a string of wooden beads on his wrist, which might be Buddhist prayer beads, but his dark red and rough cheeks from being exposed to the wind and sun, as well as his upright posture, clearly indicated that he was a soldier.
They were in front of the small building at the south gate of Base 1, which was still within the military control zone. However, the soldier wearing Buddhist beads walked straight past the guards, patted Yang Yuning on the shoulder, and looked him up and down.
"You're finally back! Master... Your uncle has been worried sick these past few days! Knowing you'd be back today, he specifically asked me to wait for you at the door." He said to Yang Yuning, then shook hands with Guan Ling, repeatedly saying, "Those who survive a great calamity are sure to have good fortune in the future."
Someone from Guanling also came to pick us up; it was a young man wearing a dirty white coat and with messy, frizzy hair.
He saw Guan Ling's eyes immediately blur, and he practically stumbled and lunged at him.
"Director, you're finally back!! I've been having nightmares every day for the past two days! My senior brothers and sisters are all... If you weren't here, even if they forced me to my death, we still wouldn't be able to build the miniature fusion reactor!"
The young man wiped his snot and tears all over Guan Ling, who was both disgusted and amused. Hearing "senior brother and senior sister" made him feel so sad that he choked up. In the end, he just patted the young man's messy hair.
This time, his team consisted of five people. Two of them had escaped from the assassination attempt during the internal strife, but the third one succumbed to the pain and pressure on the night he was rescued and was shot and killed by Yang Yuning.
“Let’s go back to the lab,” Guan Ling said.
As soon as he stepped outside, a group of heavily armed soldiers surrounded him from all angles, forming a mobile fortress that conspicuously disappeared into the distance.
The members of Team 2 finally had a more concrete understanding of the fact that Professor Guan was indeed a very important person.
The personnel from Base North 1 who were in charge of coordinating the mission with the team had arrived. They had just confirmed the safety and health of Guan Ling and Yang Yuning, had them sign the necessary documents, and then saluted Shuang.
"Our department has arranged accommodations for the comrades on the Zhongyuan No. 3 mission. The preparation of biofuel supplies will take another one to two days. Please rest well and wait patiently!"
The team members returned his greeting and followed him to his lodgings.
"I'll come find you tomorrow and show you around the base. It should be in the evening, so don't eat dinner and wait for me!" Yang Yuning shouted to the team before getting into the car.
Everyone laughed and gave him an "OK" sign.
......
The champagne-colored SUV drove on the wide road. The man wearing Buddhist prayer beads was driving, and Yang Yuning firmly refused to sit in the back seat, instead taking the passenger seat.
The man with the Buddhist prayer beads was named Yao Du'an. He was Yang Yuning's second uncle and the secretary of Yang Cheng, the commander of the 2nd Division of the Northern 1st Base Army. His military rank was higher than Yang Yuning's.
"Go home first, take a shower and have lunch. You'll be summoned by the military court by the afternoon at the latest," Yao Du'an said gently.
The summons was, of course, a summons to investigate Yang Yuning's encounter during this mission.
This incident was extremely serious and almost led to severe consequences, drawing the attention of high-ranking military officials and even the National Security Council.
Yang Yuning's expression turned cold as the matter was brought up. "This time, the escort mission was carried out by us and Team 3. Almost the entire Team 3 defected, but the one who caused the most damage was my deputy. He killed the Purifier with his first shot."
Before he died, the deputy captain told me that his family was in the hands of the Zhenyue Battle Team headquarters, and his mission was to kill everyone. If he survived, he would never be able to return to the base.
To push him to this point, it's unlikely that only someone at the brigade level could do it; there must be someone else behind him...
"Of course, the relationships involved are far more numerous and complex than you can imagine." Yao Du'an glanced at Yang Yuning:
"However, we are also investigating. No matter who is behind this, trying to kill you is an act of antagonism against our family, and your second uncle will never let him get away with it!"
Yang Yuning disliked the use of "we," saying, "Our Yang family," and "Our Yang family will never let anyone get away with this."
His grandfather never said this when he was alive, but his second uncle... or at least the people around his second uncle would say it.
His relatives, both close and distant, who held positions in various military and political departments at the base, would also speak of it.
Planning assassination missions against the team and the research team is a serious violation of discipline and a crime; military law and national law will not let those people off the hook. Yang Yuning thought to himself, but didn't say it aloud.
He looked out the window and whispered, "Grandpa said many times before he died that insect oil has endless consequences. Numerous laboratory studies have proven that the release of insect oil will cause people's pollution levels to accumulate and their mental resistance to slowly decrease."
Why would anyone be so determined to obstruct research into nuclear fusion for energy?
“With your intelligence, it’s impossible that the military would always be the first to come into contact with the corpses of the fallen insects, which is crude oil. That’s a kind of power,” Yao Du’an said calmly.
If someone can monopolize this channel, then he is the king of the base, and his position is unshakeable!
Yang Yuning remained silent.
However, Yao Du'an smiled and changed the subject, "The military is actually very busy right now, the biggest thing is the deployment in the Northwest."
I heard that the squad that rescued you was also involved in the reconnaissance of that stronghold. They were very lucky; they got involved in all the major historical events!
And I see you get along quite well with them? You even had the division commander send a letter of thanks to Central Plains 3 before…”
Towards the end, Yao Du's smile became a bit gossipy, but Yang Yuning glanced away and immediately steered the conversation back to the important matter:
"So, a major war is about to break out?"
"Hmm." Yao Du'an nodded, lowering his voice, "Northwest of Hualin County, there are billions of tons of coal and steel resources, as well as a giant smart factory built before the apocalypse. Further north, there are..."
He didn't say anything more, but the meaning was fully conveyed.
This is a war for industrial resources, a war for the future, a major war that humanity has not seen in more than a decade, a war in which it has taken the initiative to attack the Fallen Insects!
Yang Yuning sat up straight, feeling a surge of excitement.
He must participate in this great war! He must make a contribution in this great war, even if his personal strength is insignificant, he can still make a contribution to the fate of all mankind!
The car drove into a high-end residential area with even greenery. Yao Du'an stopped the car and, out of the corner of his eye, saw Yang Yuning's excited expression. He couldn't help but move his lips, as if he were smiling.
He habitually grasped the prayer beads in his hand, gently twirled them, then smiled, opened the car door, and accompanied Yang Yuning upstairs.
