Chapter 10 That Girl
Qi An's file was falsified.
Teacher Tang not only changed the timing of her enhancement value increase, but also added the "mental comfort" ability.
Qi An felt that Lan Xingxing might have tampered with the electronic file, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to deceive even the bigwigs at the Purification Alliance headquarters.
But that's not the point. The point is, who is the person she needs to comfort?
"This mission is classified as a very high-level mission, an S-level mission, so I cannot tell you who it is for the time being."
"But the mission is to be carried out tonight, and you'll see him soon." Wei Maochun pushed the tablet towards Qi An.
On the tablet was a confidentiality agreement, which was very brief, but the bright red seal clearly read "Northern Base 1 Ground Defense Command".
There seemed to be no room for refusal, so Qi An paused for a moment before signing his name.
"I'm worried the patient's condition might not be good, so you might have to stay for a couple more days. Go back and pack some clothes, and let your friends know you're safe."
New mission notifications will also be sent to your base and your unit simultaneously, so you don't need to worry about security issues.
"You are a very valuable talent." Wei Maochun said slowly and deliberately, glancing at Qi An through the rising steam of the tea as he finished speaking.
Qi An looked up when she heard this. They looked at each other, and she lowered her eyes first before getting up to say goodbye.
These few short minutes made the people waiting downstairs very anxious.
Lin Jiaran was extremely anxious, inwardly cursing herself for her previous "letting go," which was truly heartless!
Qin Tianshuo was also anxious, but this was his first time visiting the Purification Alliance headquarters. While he was anxious, he also looked around with admiration and curiosity.
Qi An reassured the two that he was safe and comforted them, saying, "It's nothing, just a new mission."
She thought that since the same superpower had a calming effect, the reason it called her instead of Lin Jiaran was probably because the person who needed purification was too important, while Lin Jiaran belonged to the new student base.
Lin Jiaran participated in the "White Tower" project because the new student base thought the "White Tower" concept was promising and sent an exchange student.
Therefore, none of the purifiers who wanted to win considered Lin Jia Ran as a competitor.
Qi An assumed that this important figure was a high-ranking official in the military or political sphere, someone who held state power.
However, the purifier who led the way—Director Dong of the Alliance Headquarters—did not head towards the administration building, nor towards the brightly lit area.
They walked along a quiet, tree-lined path, strolling beneath the lush plane trees.
On the other side of the tree were familiar detached houses, a long row of them, staggered in height, each with its own door and courtyard, and most of them had lights on inside.
Upon reaching a barren courtyard, the guide turned into a soldier. They then entered a spacious but dimly lit hall under bright streetlights, and descended many flights of stairs to reach a deep, dark underground space.
A greater sense of familiarity washed over Qi An from the white walls, the white ceiling and the gray floor, and from the dazzling incandescent lights, overwhelming him!
She stopped in her tracks.
The soldier leading the way noticed and turned around in confusion.
"Dr. Qi?" he called out.
She also became familiar with this soldier.
He was neither a close air defense soldier nor a special forces member. His face, weathered from years underground, had turned pale and bluish-white, and his sharp eyes were like those of a hawk silently watching from the shadows in the dark.
He was a guard at the laboratory, belonging to some secret unit!
The soldier's voice sent a chill down Qi An's spine, but it also jolted her out of the familiar, terrifying daze.
She is Dr. Qi now; this is not her laboratory.
The smell here is wrong too; it lacks that damp, intoxicating aroma and the strong medicinal scent that permeates the dampness.
There was a low, swirling humming sound underground, like... the noise of a computer mainframe running!
Noise was everywhere, converging into a river that rose above his ankles. When Qi An took another step, he felt as if he were walking on an electronic riverbed.
As she walked down the long corridor, she saw at the end, where the lights were even brighter, that a man and a woman stood.
The woman wore a soft pink shirt, which complemented her fair, round face. She looked very approachable, but her cheekbones were slightly high, and her eyes were long and bright. When she looked at Qi An, she felt that they had a sharpness and strength like needles.
The man was in his early thirties, hunched over, with dark circles under his eyes, looking somewhat tired and颓废 (颓废 is a difficult word to translate directly, but it implies a state of being listless, dispirited, or颓废).
The woman took two steps forward, shook hands with Qi An, and said with a smile, "Welcome, Dr. Qi. My surname is Lan, and my name is Lan Jiarou. I am the life supervisor of the 'Star Fortress' Research Institute."
She didn't stand on ceremony and led Qi An further inside: "You understand the mission details, right? It involves purifying an important figure here."
The one who was always accompanied by the purifier had a relatively low level of contamination, but she was quite irritable and refused to let the original purifier get close.
Dr. Qi should try chatting with them first to get to know them better before looking for an opportunity for purification.
If you can calm that person down, all of us—a hundred or so people—will be eternally grateful to you!
Lan Jiarou spoke kindly, and at the end she even made a gesture of pleading with her palms together.
Qi An became wary, wondering if the person was an extremely powerful superhuman who could become violent and harm others.
But at the very back of each room, in a semi-circular glass room with bright lights and a cool, smooth floor, in the middle of a room that looks like a crystal glass ball, there is a small, fixed figure.
Lan Jiarou gently tapped on the glass and called out, "Xiao Fu, a new friend has arrived!"
The small figure turned its head, revealing a round, full-moon-like face, but extremely pale. Its round eyes glanced past Lan Jiarou and looked directly at Qi An.
The scene around Qi An seemed to shift and change in an instant, transforming into a dim afternoon outside the iron fence.
That was the first time she and her team had come to the North 1 Base, and Yang Yuning was showing them around.
So the tree-lined road and the rows of houses and courtyards were so familiar to her, and the little girl in the red coat was also familiar to her, appearing in her dreams many times afterward!
Qi An was somewhat stunned, and Lan Jiarou was also slightly taken aback.
Because the little girl inside the glass ball, Tan Fu, did not coldly turn her head away again.
Instead, she stood up, put her hands in the small pockets of her red coat, and smiled at Qi An.
“I know her!” she said.
The little girl had such a delicate face, but her legs were already quite long.
She strode over, her eyes growing increasingly interested, and her tone carrying a hint of joy:
"She was there both times we killed monsters! I even talked to her."
"You've brought a new friend this time!"
The word "friend" was emphasized. As the little girl spoke, she pressed herself against the glass and made an abstract, ghostly face in front of Qi An.
They were so close that if it weren't for the thick glass separating them, they could practically hear each other breathing.
This layer of glass is also like a mirror.
Qi An's mind kept replaying the phrase "killing monsters twice," and he could hear the hum of countless computer arrays running simultaneously. Looking at the distorted, ghostly face, he thought to himself:
This is "Blue Star," that omnipresent, abnormally intelligent, and powerful AI.
