Chapter 49 Some Long-Awaited Promises
Qi An watched as the explosive device fell down, and his heart tightened for a moment!
But it didn't explode, and it didn't explode when it landed.
This thing is quite stable; it can either be detonated remotely or requires an open flame to ignite it.
Qi An pressed the valve down again, tightened it, and then his legs went weak, causing him to kneel on top of the oil tank.
She moved back a little further, not daring to touch those iron-gray pipes anymore—they were too hot! If it weren't for the enhanced power of her mutation, her hands would have been burned to a crisp!
The blazing sun still hung high in the sky, as if it wanted to bake everyone alive, but the wind had died down. In Qi An's perception, all 32 mimicry insects in the factory had died.
The sounds of artillery fire from the north and south have mostly subsided. There seems to be a fire in the factory area, but it's not very large and should be able to be extinguished.
"Captains, report the number of people!" Chen Yuezhou rushed to the bottom of Qi'an's oil tank and said into his earpiece.
"Team Stars 1 is at full strength, with one member seriously injured!" This was Qin Tianshuo's message.
"Team Stars 2 is at full strength, with two seriously injured!"
"One member of Team Stars is seriously injured." These are Gao Chenglin and Chen Chuan.
"Two members of Team Chilong are seriously injured, two members of Teams 2 and 3 are seriously injured together, and one member has mutated..."
Chen Yuezhou frowned, while Yang Suning clenched his fist tightly!
Chen Yuezhou didn't say anything, only that: "Received. Send the seriously injured to the hospital, and continue searching for the remaining fallen insects in the city for those who are not seriously injured."
"Yes!" came the reply from all sides.
An unexpected battle actually brought the hastily assembled fighting group together much more.
Chen Yuezhou looked up at Qi An on top of the tank and said, "You should come down first. It's dangerous even though there are no explosives on the oil tank."
He opened his arms, as if to catch Qi An.
Yang Yuning was also beside him, looking up in the same posture.
Qi An glanced down and remained silent!
She paused for half a minute before coming down the fire ladder.
The two men were slightly embarrassed and had no choice but to lower their arms. They then exchanged a glance before turning away indifferently.
Qi An habitually checked the pollution levels of everyone present.
Yu Shuang is fine, Zhou Yanhui has some issues, Yang Suning has a major problem, and the Level 3 mutation is progressing to Level 4!
Qi An grasped Zhou Yanhui's hand, briefly purifying it, which caused the man's thick eyebrows and big eyes to twitch, and he almost cried out "Sister Qi".
But when Yang Suning looked over, Qi An turned his head and gestured: "I'm bleeding a lot from my back."
"Medical team!" Yu Shuang immediately said, and Chen Yuezhou immediately called for a stretcher to be brought over.
Without saying a word, Qi An lay down on it.
Yang Suning could have Xiao Wen from their team purify him; she had no interest in joining in the fun.
Although this battle was ordinary among the many fierce battles the team had experienced, the enemy held vital resources, and any mistake by humanity would have enormous consequences.
The disaster did not strike, and Qi An's contribution was truly immense!
So, besides Su Qingran, there were several other medical staff surrounding her!
After clearing away all the explosives, searching the entire factory, and looking for any stray insects and survivors, and once Qi An's back wound was re-bandaged, the combat units belonging to the 3rd Regiment could withdraw. The rest was the business of the security and engineering departments.
However, when they, along with their soldiers and medical staff, went out the gate and onto the main road, they ran into people from the planning department and the engineering department.
The planning minister, whose hair was gleaming, was pale-faced and walked down the street looking as if he had received a great surprise, still in shock and hesitant.
Perhaps it came from the building materials factory that the tanker truck wanted to burn down?
He looked up and saw the 3rd Regiment, who had just returned victorious but seemed nonchalant, carrying guns and walking back in twos and threes beside the ambulance. He was taken aback.
Chen Yuezhou remained calm. A medical worker remarked with concern, "The worms inside have all been completely eliminated. They were dealt with very quickly. You'll be fine going in."
Whether the planning minister heard him or not, he just kept his head down, but Yu Shuang shouted with a smile: "Could the comrades in the planning department help our 3rd Regiment check if our guns are rusty? Are the muzzles still shiny?"
He must have heard it; he lowered his head further and quickened his pace.
These three groups are absolutely amazing! Absolutely amazing!
Unable to say anything, he just sulked and walked away quickly with his head down.
Everyone just laughed it off; it was just a passing episode.
This largest offensive and defensive battle, which took place in June and July and will likely continue into the second half of 2055, has come to an end.
The base suffered the loss of over 600 soldiers and over 50 civilians, including 8 senior engineers.
The post-war work lasted for four days, and it wasn't until the fifth day that the river flowing south of the base was clear as before.
A great battle that claimed hundreds of lives was conducted as if it had never happened, except that many dormitory rooms were now empty.
On the fourth day, we saw each other off at the base gate. Qi An went there early in the morning.
When Yang Yuning saw her, his smile was so wide it could almost dim the sunlight!
Yang Ying also arrived very early, staring at them with wide eyes.
Yang Yuning found it hard to say anything, but she leaned close to Qi An's ear and said, "I also wanted to come and see Xiao Ying and the others, but actually, I wanted to see you even more."
He hadn't contacted Qi An since leaving the Central Plains Base No. 3, except for one message he sent to Qi An on the same day after the Ash Priest attacked the base:
Are you alright?
Qi An didn't wake up from his coma until the fourth day, and replied: "I'm fine."
But Yang Yuning must have already learned from Yu Shuang and the others that she was alright.
The chat window displayed "[Typing...]" multiple times, but no content was sent.
Yang Yuning left in a huff at that time.
Qi An looked up at him, but then lowered his eyes again after a moment.
Both seemed to want to say something but hesitated, yet when they finally spoke, remarkably, they uttered the same sentence at the same time:
"It was my fault before..."
Yang Yuning burst into laughter, her smile widening, and she even teased him:
"You're not trying to say that your mistake was not being decisive enough in rejecting me back then, are you?"
Qi An really wanted to nod, but then hesitated.
Yang Yuning laughed and sighed at the same time, but there was a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"It's perfectly normal to be rejected by you! The leader of my new base said that he was rejected by the same girl five times when he was young!"
The sadness in his eyes was deep, but his words were still bright and cheerful. He took out his phone and pulled out an... overly complicated circuit diagram.
"These are the design drawings and parameter sheets for a small, high-speed combat drone capable of scanning and generating maps, allowing operators to input coordinates using brainwaves," he said.
"The first physical version has already gone into production. They promised to send a prototype here and give it to you."
Yang Yuning was still flipping through the design details and parameter specifications that were as long as a dissertation, while Qi An was already stunned.
It seems like a long time ago, during an oil smuggling mission, Yang Yuning was repairing a drone.
He smiled and promised in the dim light inside the car that he would design a combat drone best suited for Qi An's use.
Qi An had long forgotten about this matter.
He remembered it and faithfully fulfilled his promise.
