Chapter 17 Retreat is a dead end

Chapter 17 Retreat is a dead end

The Wolf Pack's morale was crumbling, and he was extremely worried about his family back at the base. He uttered the words "return to defend."

But in just 10 minutes, everyone along the 1-kilometer defensive line witnessed the Ash Priest casually destroying the south-facing defensive tower of the base.

It ignites a tower, and within half a minute to two minutes, a wave of fallen insects surges forth from beneath it.

The swarms of fallen insects grew larger and larger, and as the Ash Priest descended from the southwest corner defensive tower, he let out another long howl in the storm.

More than a thousand fallen insects, who were originally soldiers of the close-guard army, rushed towards the outside of the wall and towards the group of defenders on the 1-kilometer defensive line!

Therefore, there was no room for retreat, because enemies were everywhere, both in front and behind! Among the enemies behind, the Ash Priestess was in the air, forming an impenetrable wall!

The word "run" almost came out of the Snow Falcon Squadron's staff officer's mouth, but he quickly replaced it with "retreat."

But they mean the same thing!

Don't head north! Run to the east or west, scatter, get into a vehicle, floor the gas pedal, and you might still have a chance to survive!

The Wolf Pack Brigade, along with several other brigades along the 1-kilometer defensive line, were on the verge of giving orders to either rush towards the vehicles, escape directly, or rush back to the base to pick up their relatives and friends before fleeing!

The storm raged, and people's hearts trembled.

But when the Ashes Commander went to expend troops, and stood on the watchtower for a while before flying towards the true military core of the base—the East Camp, Zhuang Xiaoxin's heart tightened.

His dormitory is in Dongyingli.

There's a stall on the second floor of the Dongying canteen that sells incredibly delicious mixed grain steamed buns!

There's also the logistics department's armory in Dongying, and all the base's combat supplies are stored there—his prized sniper rifle is practically all there!

Zhuang Xiao's heart clenched, while Jiang Mo's expression changed drastically when he saw the wise insect heading straight for the East Camp!

However, the howl that just echoed across the fields, coupled with his violently fluctuating emotions and that glance, caused his already high level of pollution to surge even further!

Jiang Mo covered his head, his nails almost digging into the skin of his forehead. He couldn't help but want to grab the guard's gun, to grab the guns of Zhuang Xiao and his gang, to gather all the weapons around himself, and even hide them inside his body!

He had killed the Fallen Bug that had wandered into the neighborhood, but there were Fallen Bugs in the neighborhood before! There was even a Master Chief!

Jiang Mo has undergone a level 3 mutation; tentacles have grown on his only remaining guard!

The Ash Priest flew over the Eastern Camp.

Jiang Mo struggled to his feet, ran a few steps forward, and shouted to Zhuang Xiao, "If you have a purifier, could you stay and help us purify?"

All notions of dignity for those in high positions and aversion to troublemakers were put aside in this critical moment. The 3rd Regiment Commander sought help from the 2nd Team of the Wind Chaser!

On the outer defense line of the base, after the staff officer uttered the word "retreat," Zhang Kuanxin, who had been stunned for a long time, suddenly became furious!

He was furious, his nostrils flared, his eyes were bloodshot, and he let out a thunderous roar:

"Don't retreat! Don't go back to defend! Hold that line!"

"The firepower they've given you is more than enough to hold the line. Hold the line, you bastards!!"

The roar nearly ripped the eardrums of the Wolf Pack Brigade and startled several brigade commanders and staff officers around Zhang Kuanxin!

Although the 2nd Regiment Commander was the least favored by the Commander-in-Chief among the three regimental commanders, he was the most generous and good-tempered, a trait that made the 2nd Regiment's corps the envy of the other two regiments.

But when a person who is usually good-tempered gets angry, it's like a volcano spewing out pillars of rock, or a tsunami crashing against the rocks.

Zhang Kuanxin was furious at his previous gross misjudgment of the battle situation, as well as at the enemy's strength and cunning, and at the precarious situation at that moment!

His anger was also an expression of fear, a way to intimidate the troops and boost morale!

The Snow Falcon Squadron, long under Zhang Kuanxin's command, nearly jolted awake at the roar and instinctively responded, "Yes, sir!"

Then he quickly ordered his troops to form ranks and prepare to meet the wave of fallen insects coming from the base.

After a moment of bewilderment, the Wolf Pack Commando glanced at the blood-soaked battlefield, then looked back in the direction of the base, and hesitantly agreed.

The staff officer of the Snow Falcon Squadron was still questioning and panicking, but Zhang Kuanxin kicked him directly:

"You might be able to steal a vehicle and escape, but do you think you can fucking escape with 10,000 troops at both defensive lines?!"

What do humans rely on to fight the Fallen Insects?

Aside from intellect and guns, all that matters is one's will to live! If that will falter, death is certain!

Now that they are fleeing, at least 9,900 of these 10,000 troops will be corrupted by their own mental breakdown and by the corrupted insects chasing them from behind!

This is only 10,000 troops; there are 300,000 civilians in the base!

Once they collapsed and were corrupted, the people had no hope left! The Ash Priest and a mere three thousand Fallen Insects leveled a base with almost no cost!

But humans are not that fragile. We must let these damned insects know that human wisdom and will are far from being so fragile!

Zhang Kuanxin usually tries to avoid trouble and save himself energy, but at this moment he was both supervising and directing the battle situation on the 5-kilometer defense line and anxiously contacting the base.

Whether out of arrogance or caution, the Ash Priest sent the wall-guarding guards, who had been corrupted by it, to deal with them, while it continued to corrupt the civilians in the base.

This is an opportunity!

In the hospital, when faced with the captain's hopeful inquiry, Qi An gave the same answer:

"We still have a sliver of hope!"

On May 7, the results of the first phase of the "Fire Source" campaign were announced, the list of commendations was published, and a heavy armed helicopter arrived at the base.

There was only one item on the helicopter, escorted by an elite special operations team from the North 1st Division.

That was an anti-aircraft weapon.

Everyone felt that the next phase of the war would focus on two new bases and mineral resources that could be considered the spark of civilization.

This is conventional thinking, but it's just conventional human thinking.

What are minerals to the Fallen Insects? Just rocks! Only people matter.

If they can completely pollute a base that serves as a transit hub for supplies and personnel, turning 300,000 soldiers and civilians into 300,000 corrupted insects, then what will become of the Northwest War?

During the first phase of the entire campaign, the Ash Priests of the Northwest Legion did not appear. How could the General Headquarters have overlooked this?

The only thing that matters is people, and this is actually true for humanity as well.

While Zhang Kuanxin was frantically trying to contact the base commander using both military and personal communicators, the base commander had already arranged for vehicles to take his family away from the north gate.

Out of a sense of responsibility and shame, he had not left yet, and he knew that the weapon was stored in the East Camp, and that both he and Lu Yunbai's biometric information could activate it.

But that powerful wisdom insect, which could be described as either an angel or a demon, had already descended upon Dongying, and the area was being polluted at an alarming rate!

Even if he has three A-level guards and a team of elite sheriffs, going there would be suicide.

The base commander paced back and forth in his spacious office, seemingly a desperate, trapped beast compared to the 300,000 people!

But Jiang Mo, the commander of the 3rd Regiment, who was not far from Dongying, asked Zhuang Xiao for help.

Seeing his former boss's miserable state, Zhuang Xiao felt a pang of urgency, whether out of respect for his superior or a sense of satisfaction at saving his "enemy."

But he's not a purifier!

Neither Gu Liansheng nor Lu Sui showed any sign of stopping; they had already run several hundred meters.

But when Zhuang Xiao yelled in his ear, "Should we save them?", Gu Liansheng yelled back:

"Didn't you see that bug coming? At this point, even if the captain came, it wouldn't help!"

And haven't you always said your leader is an idiot?

His refusal was heard by Yu Shuang, Zhao Bohan, and Qi An through the group voice chat!
