'hiss--'
The slender creature tilted its head back and let out a short, rapid sound.
Immediately afterwards, a rustling sound came from the wall outside the room.
Something seemed to be crawling rapidly along the wall.
After the commotion subsided and they went down to the first floor, Xiao Yin and Da Wang turned their attention to the window.
Jiang Nian'an's gaze followed theirs.
Looking out the window downstairs.
Then they saw a group of two-inch-long, slender creatures rush out of the hotel and climb onto the bodies of the already dead survivors.
A chewing sound rang out.
It wasn't until ten minutes later that the group of slender creatures dispersed.
Only a skeleton remained on the spot.
"Uncle—"
Xiao Liangzhou's face turned pale, and he was immediately silenced by Yunhua before he could even open his mouth.
The slender creature that was scurrying around below, seemingly searching for survivors, heard the noise and suddenly looked up towards the second floor.
The four of them had already crouched down before it even raised its head, their bodies pressed against the wall, holding their breath.
The slender creature's gaze swept across the second floor, but it saw nothing.
'hiss--'
Just then, a slender creature made a sound not far away.
The slender creatures that had been lingering downstairs ran in that direction.
Only after the commotion downstairs completely subsided did Jiang Nian'an lift Xiao Yin up.
Little Silver only showed half of its head, its eyes looking around below.
After confirming that the slender creatures had left, it shrank back down.
'Hiss'
[He's gone.]
Jiang Nian'an then let out a soft breath, gave the three of them a wink, and pointed to the room.
Shen Nanxing and the other two understood each other, got up quietly, and walked into the room.
"What was that just now? A rat?" Yunfan asked in a low voice.
The thought that the thing had crawled out of the survivor's mouth sent chills down his spine.
“I couldn’t see clearly,” Shen Nanxing shook his head, “but it shouldn’t be a rat, the size doesn’t match.”
"The sound doesn't match either; judging from the voice alone, it sounds like a lizard," Yunhua added from the side.
Jiang Nian'an didn't speak; she was trying hard to search her memory, attempting to find clues about the slender creature.
But a few minutes later, she sighed with great regret.
She had never seen this before.
There are countless types of mutated creatures in the post-apocalyptic world.
Even including the five years of her previous life, the number of mutated creatures she had seen probably did not account for more than one percent of the total.
"Waaaaah—"
Suddenly, a woman's crying came from the room across the street.
"Don't make a sound, who knows if those monsters are far away!"
Another female voice rang out, followed by a gruff male voice echoing, "That's right, if they hear us and come back, we'll all be dead!"
The crying immediately subsided, becoming suppressed.
"There are still three hours until dawn. Just to be on the safe side, let's stay here for now and head back to base as soon as it gets light!"
"OK!"
These are two more voices.
After the two finished speaking, there was no further response from the other side.
Jiang Nian'an and the other three learned from their conversation that there was a base in Tan City.
Yunhua looked down at Xiao Liangzhou, who was clearly very sleepy but was trying hard to keep his eyes open, not daring to fall asleep.
Will the shelter accept children who are not accompanied by adults?
"I don't know, but let's give it a try!"
Although Jiang Nian'an said this, she was certain in her heart that the base would definitely take it.
The current bases are all built by local governments, and orphans like those in Liangzhou are within their scope of assistance.
She yawned, got up, and flopped onto the bed. "I'm going to take a nap."
Yunhua put Xiao Liangzhou on the sofa and said to him, "It's okay, go to sleep."
Xiao Liangzhou gripped his hand tightly, as if grasping at courage, and slowly closed his eyes.
Yunhua simply sat down on the floor and rested against the sofa.
Shen Nanxing sat on the other end of the sofa, closing his eyes to rest.
Yunfan lay down on the coffee table and fell asleep with his arm as a pillow.
Those slender creatures did not reappear until dawn.
Jiang Nian'an had already prepared breakfast: instant porridge and meat patties.
After breakfast, they listened to the sounds coming from across the street.
It wasn't until after 7 a.m. that the door across the street opened, and the person cautiously walked downstairs.
Let's go!
Jiang Nian'an stretched and climbed down from the second-floor window.
The same applies to Shen Nanxing and the other two.
Xiao Liangzhou was caught by Jiang Nian'an using vines.
Using this method, they actually got a step ahead of the other group.
"ah!"
Before the person arrived, a shrill scream was heard first.
Just as Jiang Nian'an and the other three were about to check the situation, four pale-faced survivors ran out from inside.
"Run! There's a monster!"
One of them shouted something to Jiang Nian'an and the others as he passed by.
No sooner had she finished speaking than another man rushed out of the building.
He looked pained, his right hand tightly clutching his chest.
"Lin Ling, Sun Sheng is still alive—"
Another woman in the group grabbed Lin Ling, trying to pull her to help Sun Sheng.
Just then, like the survivor who died in the middle of the night, Sun Sheng stumbled forward a few steps and then collapsed.
This familiar scene immediately reminded Jiang Nian'an and the other three, as well as Xiao Liangzhou, of the image of that slender creature crawling out of the survivor's mouth.
They both stepped back.
Jiang Nian'an also reminded Lin Ling, who had just told her to run, "Don't go over there!"
