Wei Cheng remained seated in the helicopter, gazing ahead and silently listening to the desperate cries of those people.
"Heaven is going to destroy me! Heaven is going to destroy me!"
"Waaah... Wife, I'm sorry, I failed to protect you, I deserve to die."
"Ah—, let me die. I can't go on living, I really can't go on living. My wife was eight months pregnant, and now she and the baby are just a pile of minced meat. How am I supposed to live? Ah—"
"Mom, Mom, please say something! Don't leave me! If you leave, I'll have no home anymore!"
"This, this is my dad's arm! Ahhhhh, Dad, Dad, where are you?"
The survivors frantically dug through the rubble, calling out their names as they removed the stones.
But all they received in response was deathly silence.
Looking at the scene before him, Wei Cheng said to Wei Yi, "Bring the person in charge here to see me."
"yes."
He then instructed the others: "Those with mental abilities, go and help find the survivors; those with physical abilities, help move the boulders. The rest of you, go and act on your own."
The group of people he brought quickly went down to help.
But what happened next still made even a group of people who had seen a lot of things tremble all over.
Severed limbs and broken arms are considered good; those corpses that were crushed by houses or trampled by giants only have fragments of intestines and brains to be seen.
Some of the half-dead corpses, which were not quite dead, were instantly frozen to death by the extreme cold. Some had their mouths wide open, while others died with their eyes wide open. Every corpse was frozen into an ice sculpture.
This base originally had 120,000 people, but after the great battle just now, less than 30,000 survived.
The houses in the base were almost completely destroyed, and they had no idea how they would get through the night.
Wei Yi led two middle-aged men to the helicopter where Wei Cheng was staying. After inviting them to board, Wei Yi respectfully said to Wei Cheng, "Young Master, this is Battalion Commander Cheng, and this is Secretary Wang from the base. The base commander and the county magistrate, among others, were killed in the fighting just now."
Wei Cheng looked at the two disheveled people and gestured for Wei Yi to take out two bottles of water and hand them to them: "Drink some warm water first, and then tell me what happened."
Battalion Commander Cheng and Secretary Wang were extremely grateful. After drinking a third of the water from their bottles, they stopped drinking.
It's not that they aren't thirsty, but that they can't bear to finish their drinks.
They were already severely lacking in supplies, and after tonight's ordeal, they didn't know how they would survive.
Battalion Commander Cheng looked at Wei Cheng with gratitude in his eyes: "Thank you so much for saving us tonight. If you hadn't arrived in time, we might all have perished here tonight."
Wei Cheng nodded slightly, accepting the other party's thanks.
He asked, "Have you seen this giant before?"
Mentioning the giants, Battalion Commander Cheng and Secretary Wang's auras suddenly became unstable.
Secretary Wang took off his glasses, which now only had one lens remaining, rubbed his swollen forehead, and said with a wry smile, "Mr. Wei, you're from the capital, aren't you?"
"Um."
Secretary Wang gave a wry smile: "Mr. Wei, you may not know this, but starting three days ago, our small bases in the Northeast region have been destroyed one after another by the giants."
I've lived here for so long and have never heard of any giants. These giants seem to have appeared out of nowhere. They are brutal and bloodthirsty, and they like to destroy everything related to us humans.
They enjoy raiding at night, tearing human bodies apart, and listening to human screams; the more agonizing the screams, the more excited they become.
Before each base was destroyed, defensive measures were taken, and weapons and personnel were prepared for battle. But when the giants suddenly appeared, it became clear that all these preparations were utterly useless.
Battalion Commander Cheng said sadly, "We made preparations two days in advance, but it was still useless. The enemy was too strong, and they appeared suddenly."
Our guards, patrols, and even the other survivors at the base were all keeping a close watch on the outside, not daring to be the slightest bit negligent, but we still couldn't prevent it from happening.
Wei Cheng listened quietly to their story without interrupting.
Only after the two had calmed down a bit did he speak: "Where was the first place the giant appeared? Phoenix Mountain?"
Secretary Wang shook his head: "No, Phoenix Mountain is more than 500 kilometers away from here. They first appeared in Yongqing Mountain."
Yongqing Mountain?
Two places?
Wei Cheng lowered his eyes, surprised that an earthquake and natural disaster could cause such a big problem.
He then asked a few more questions before letting them leave.
He will stay here tonight. Even if the base is destroyed, he can still make do for one night.
However, this night was not easy for many survivors. The temperature was too low, the canteen was destroyed, the heaters were destroyed, the warehouse was destroyed, and many things were buried under the ruins. It was very difficult to move these stones and retrieve items in the extreme cold.
But in order to survive, everyone forced themselves to cheer up from their grief and worked together to find useful supplies from the rubble.
The biggest problem the base is facing right now is not food, but the wounded.
Due to the extreme cold and excessive blood loss, some of the injured froze to death before doctors arrived.
Many people spontaneously found their own blankets, coats, and quilts to cover the injured, and some even found small stoves to place next to the injured, using books, old clothes, and cardboard boxes as fuel.
Even so, quite a few injured people still died intermittently.
Wei Yi reported the situation at the base to Wei Cheng. Wei Cheng touched the level-three fire-element crystal core and said calmly, "The supplies we brought are only enough for one week, so don't be a pushover."
This is the cruel end times. If you can't bear to see it, or if you feel sorry for them, you can use your own strength to help them. But I don't want to see you not at your best when I need you.
"Understood."
He quickly left to relay Wei Cheng's message to his companions: they could decide for themselves what to do.
