They laughed heartily, but then they burst into tears.
A boy with messy, short hair sat on the ruins of a wall, holding a corpse in his arms.
The boy was emaciated and sallow, missing three teeth. His face and hands were covered in frostbite. He held the frozen corpse and said in a hoarse voice, "Sister, we can go to the underground city now... but you, Aunt Li, and Uncle Qiao won't have a chance to see what the underground city is like."
The boy's name is Zhu Yong, and she is a seventeen-year-old girl.
Because she was too beautiful, in order to avoid being captured and treated like merchandise, she cut her beautiful long hair into a messy, super short style that looked like it had been chewed by a dog.
Because of frostbite and long-term starvation that made her so thin that she looked unrecognizable, and because she wore a turtleneck sweater to cover her Adam's apple, she was able to escape being caught time and time again.
But her sister wasn't so lucky. She worked here and many people knew her. Plus, her features were so striking that even if she disguised herself, she would still be recognized and then taken away and given to those people in exchange for some food.
Yesterday, a group of handsome men and beautiful women came to the base. Everyone around said they were heroes to the people at the bottom of the base!
Regardless of the factions within the base, they wiped them all out with overwhelming force.
If it weren't for them, she would never have seen her sister.
Unfortunately, when they found her sister, she had already been tortured to the point of near death.
She carried her sister back to their old, dilapidated house, hoping to help her recover through her own efforts. But fate seemed to be deliberately working against them, and the temperature dropped again.
My sister didn't make it through the night; she froze to death.
"Zhu Yong, if you're still alive, hurry up and go to the registration office to register, otherwise you won't be able to get a house."
The person who called her was Zhang Lei, three years older than her. He had fought with her for half a pancake and fought alongside her against a group of thugs who didn't get along with them. The two of them were often beaten bloody, but they survived like cockroaches.
He was wearing an ill-fitting coat. He came over, took the body from her arms, and placed it aside. He then found a blanket in the ruins and covered the body with it.
Then he said to her, "No one will take your sister's body. I heard that the energy just now not only destroyed the base, but also the processing plant."
In other words, since there are no processing plants now, even if we die, we won't become food. We'll go queue up now, and after registration is complete, we'll come back and bury your sister in some rubble.
Zhu Yong was pulled away by him, and when they arrived at the registration desk, a long queue had already formed.
Zhang Lei didn't know that Zhu Yong was a girl. He always treated her like a younger brother. He had a younger brother who was the same age as Zhu Yong and died from an infectious disease. So when he saw Zhu Yong, who was as thin and small as his brother, he instinctively wanted to protect her.
Zhu Yong endured the cold and hunger while queuing in the cold wind. Coupled with her sister's death, she became lifeless.
Zhang Lei stood behind her and said, "I heard that the reason we were able to enter the underground city was thanks to that group of people."
"That ridiculously beautiful girl, the one you said was prettier than Moody, I heard she was the one who gave the order."
Zhu Yong, who had been like a walking corpse, finally reacted upon hearing this. She turned her head slightly and asked in a hoarse voice, "Really?"
Zhang Lei nodded, leaned closer to her and continued, "I also heard that yesterday there was not only a great upheaval in the base, but I also heard that she led people to the underground city and killed all the corrupt officials there."
At this point, he became somewhat agitated: "If they had come to us sooner, would we not have suffered so much? My brother...maybe...he wouldn't have died." He choked up at the end.
When Zhu Yong thought of her sister, the suffering her sister had endured, and the misfortunes of her life, she wanted to cry.
But she had already cried all her tears out, and now no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shed a single tear.
