Chapter 104 Fu Jinxing's Fury
Qiao Xi and Xie Jue crouched on the dusty windowsill on the first floor, their eyes fixed on the wandering figure on the street below.
That was a wind-type zombie that had just completed its evolution.
Its movements were far less swift and fluid than the secondary evolved form it had encountered before. The joints of its limbs even moved with a stiff, clumsy feel, and the wind blades it condensed were crooked and distorted. After shaving off a corner of the abandoned mailbox next to it, it disappeared without a trace.
“Sister,” Xie Jue’s voice was extremely low, filled with an unprecedented focus and eagerness, “this one… seems to have just evolved; its movements are very clumsy. I think… I’d like to try and solve it myself.”
Josie turned to look at him in surprise.
The boy's profile was taut, but his eyes shone with an astonishing brightness, like the sharp edge of a tempered blade.
She frowned slightly: "Are you sure? Even if it's newly evolved, it's definitely not comparable to an ordinary zombie. Its speed and strength far surpass those of an ordinary zombie, not to mention its special abilities." She pointed to the mailbox with a corner cut off.
Xie Jue's gaze was fixed on the staggering zombie. His Adam's apple bobbed, but his tone was unusually firm: "Yes, I want to try."
He didn't explain much, but Josie clearly sensed the suppressed urgency beneath his calm demeanor, the desire to prove himself.
Seeing the unwavering determination in his eyes, Josie finally nodded slowly: "Okay. Better safe than sorry, if something feels wrong, retreat immediately."
Xie Jue took a deep breath and, like a cheetah poised to pounce, suddenly flipped out of the window!
Upon landing, it lightly rolled over to dissipate the force, making no sound whatsoever.
She walked slowly out of the gate without making a sound, transforming into a bicycle and automatically approaching the evolved zombie.
Its attention was drawn, and Xie Jue took the opportunity to approach.
But it quickly discovered Xie Jue's presence; after all, a bicycle devoid of any appeal couldn't compare to fresh and delicious food.
His cloudy eyes turned to him, and a hoarse hiss came from his throat.
With a clumsy lift of his arm, a wind blade, more solid than before, whistled and slashed down!
Xie Jue's pupils contracted, and his body snapped open like a taut bowstring!
The wind blade grazed the hem of his clothes, leaving a faint white mark on the concrete ground behind him.
Without pausing, he used the momentum of his roll to propel himself around the zombie at an astonishing speed!
His movements were no longer simply based on instinct and ruthlessness, but incorporated the skills he had honed during this period of time on the brink of life and death.
With light and swift movements, they made full use of abandoned vehicles and overturned billboards on the street as cover, constantly changing positions to make the zombies' clumsy turning and aiming look even more ridiculous.
"roar!"
Enraged, the zombie unleashed several wind blades in succession.
Xie Jue either slid in low to the ground or rolled sideways, narrowly avoiding each other.
The wind blades struck the surrounding obstacles, sending debris flying and dust billowing everywhere.
Josie, watching from the shadows, was terrified.
Twice, the wind blades almost grazed Xie Jue's scalp! She nearly couldn't resist helping him on both occasions.
But the boy's eyes were calm, and although his breathing was rapid, he was not flustered. Like a dancer dancing on the edge of a knife, he turned the life-and-death struggle into a thrilling game.
A full ten minutes of extreme stretching!
The zombies seemed to be moving more slowly, and the intervals between condensing wind blades were getting longer and longer.
Just as it raised its arm once more, attempting to condense a wind blade, a cold glint flashed in Xie Jue's eyes!
Instead of dodging, he charged straight at the zombies like an arrow released from a bow!
Just before the opponent's wind blade was about to leave his hand, he suddenly ducked, his body almost sliding along the ground, narrowly passing under the zombie's swinging arm!
At the same time, his long-awaited right arm, like a venomous snake emerging from its hole, gripped a sharp dagger with all his strength and pent-up hatred and desire, and stabbed it precisely into the zombie's weak jaw!
Pfft!
The tip of the dagger pierced through the skull and reached deep into the brain!
The zombie's raised arm froze in mid-air, the condensed wind blades silently dissipated, its turbid eyes instantly lost all their luster, and its massive body crashed to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Xie Jue, panting, pulled out the dagger and flicked away the thick, black blood from the tip.
He didn't immediately go to retrieve the crystal core. Instead, he stood there, looking down at his slightly trembling hands, then at the motionless corpse on the ground, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
Instead of the expected ecstatic self-affirmation, there was an indescribable emptiness and heaviness.
Josie deactivated her transformation, walked to his side, and gently patted his sweaty shoulder: "Well done, Xiao Jue."
She sincerely admired the boy's rapid growth, which far exceeded her expectations.
Xie Jue raised his head, his face smeared with a few drops of black blood, but his eyes were unusually clear, even with a hint of confusion.
He didn't respond to Josie's praise, but instead asked in a low voice, "Sister, do you think... will ordinary people really still have a chance to become superhumans in the future?"
His voice was soft, yet it struck Josie's heart like a hammer blow.
Josie was taken aback, looking at the deep, almost overflowing longing in his eyes.
She knew how hard Xie Jue worked, and she also knew his inner thirst for power.
She hesitated for only a moment before patting his shoulder firmly, her voice resolute, "Of course there's still a chance! The apocalypse is full of unknowns, and perhaps you'll become a superhuman soon!"
She avoided the harsh reality: the later the stage, the slimmer the probability of an ordinary person awakening superpowers became, almost like a miracle.
Xie Jue's eyes flickered, the light like a candle flickering in the wind, weak yet persistent.
He didn't ask any more questions, but silently squatted down and skillfully used his dagger to dig out the pale green crystal core from the zombie's head.
He held the small crystal, imbued with the power of the wind, and gazed at it for a very long time…
Josie coughed lightly and changed the subject, "Xiao Jue, we should go back."
The two embarked on their journey home, the sunlight casting long shadows of them.
Before they even left the city, a group of people appeared ahead.
Josie immediately recognized the gentle-looking figure in the middle, dressed in a white shirt and black pants.
"Xixi, what are you doing here?"
"Brother Jinxing?" Qiao Xi was also a little surprised. As the two got closer, she subconsciously stepped forward.
However, as soon as she got close, two superhumans wearing dark blue combat uniforms and with cold expressions immediately stepped forward and rudely blocked her away!
The force was so great that Josie was caught off guard and staggered.
"What are you doing!" Fu Jinxing's face darkened instantly. He quickly stepped forward to help Qiao Xi steady herself, his tone filled with rare anger.
"Xixi, are you hurt?"
He carefully examined Josie's arm, and after confirming that it was unharmed, his cold gaze swept over the two superhumans who had attacked.
"It's alright." Josie steadied herself, her sharp gaze sweeping over the indifferent faces.
She remembered clearly that these people were the arrogant outsiders with superpowers who had barged into the safe zone a few days earlier.
How did they end up with Fu Jinxing? And it even seems like they're... protecting him?
