Chapter 116 Xie Jue's Choice

Chapter 116 Xie Jue's Choice

Josie was standing by the window, trying to activate her superpowers.

I could clearly feel that the power fluctuations were stronger than before, but I still couldn't transform.

thump thump thump...

There was a knock on the door. "Xixi, is now a good time? I'm coming in."

Josie immediately sat back down in her chair. "It's convenient, Brother Jinxing, please come in."

The door was pushed open, and Fu Jinxing slowly walked in carrying a tray.

On the tray were a reagent and a syringe.

Josie knew what it was. Her eyes flickered, and she immediately softened her shoulders and lowered her gaze gently.

"Brother Jinxing, I'm afraid of pain, can I skip the injection?"

She tried her best to appear innocent and harmless, just to lower Fu Jinxing's guard and stop him from injecting her with that damned inhibitor.

Her obedient expression reminded him of how Josie looked when she was young, and for a moment, he felt a little dazed.

But soon, he pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses, his gaze behind the lenses deep and unfathomable, yet a gentle smile played on his lips, as if he were truly deceived by her appearance.

"Okay, Xixi is afraid of pain, then we won't give her the injection."

well?

Is it really that simple?

If she had known that showing a little weakness would soften Fu Jinxing's heart, she should have acted obediently during the first injection.

She suppressed her joy, thinking that as long as she didn't get the injection, she would be free in less than two days.

At that point, the lab won't be able to stop her at all.

Her darting eyes did not escape Fu Jinxing's notice.

He calmly placed the tray on the table, then got up and walked to the computer next to him.

Fingers seemingly casually brushed across the screen displaying complex vital signs data; the fluctuating curves on the screen silently testified to the cruelty and high risk of the experiment.

“Look, Xixi,” his voice was deep and pleasant as he tapped on the screen, “Xie Jue’s body is simply the perfect experimental subject.”

Qiao Xi's heart skipped a beat. She looked up at him and asked, "Brother Jinxing, didn't you refuse Xie Jue's request to be a test subject?"

"He came to request to become a test subject himself, and my assistant brought him in for a detailed physical examination." He paused, then continued, "His body is indeed the most suitable candidate for the next phase of the experiment. He himself understands that this is the fastest and most promising path to success. His gene sequence fit is the highest among all the candidates so far."

“But… the risk of conducting the experiment now is too great.” Josie frowned.

Xie Jue's stubbornness and recklessness made her feel like a newborn wild animal, ignorantly and fearlessly rushing towards a cliff full of thorns.

“Perhaps you could ask for his opinion,” Fu Jinxing suggested at the opportune moment, like an older brother indulging his younger sister.

“He wants to see you, would you like to meet him?” He turned slightly to the side, gesturing to the door leading to the observation room next door.

"Okay, then I'll go see him."

Josie stood up from her chair and followed Fu Jinxing out.

Before I even got close, I could vaguely see the slightly anxious silhouette of a boy through the frosted glass in front of me.

Fu Jinxing led her into the small observation room, which contained only a table and two chairs.

When Xie Jue saw Qiao Xi come in, his eyes lit up instantly, but when he caught sight of Fu Jinxing behind her, the light quickly faded.

Qiao Xi noticed that Xie Jue hesitated several times before speaking, so she turned to Fu Jinxing and said, "Brother Jinxing, go outside and wait for me. I'll just say a few words to him and then come out."

When Qiao Xi spoke, Fu Jinxing nodded gently, "Okay, call me if you need anything."

His smile deepened, and he naturally reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. The warmth of his fingertips briefly brushed against her earlobe before he turned and walked out with steady steps, considerately closing the door behind him.

Josie turned her gaze to Xie Jue. "He's gone. What do you want to say to me?"

Xie Jue turned his head to look in the direction of the gate, then lowered his voice, "Sister, I heard people asking about you in the tent area. Three men and one woman, they were all very good-looking, and they all seemed to be superhumans... I'm afraid they might harm you, so I wanted to find you to tell you this news."

Three men and one woman... and they were all very good-looking.

Qiao Xi immediately thought of Xu Linchuan and the other two.

Her fingertips curled uncontrollably, her nails almost digging into her palms.

A mixture of disgust and wariness lingered in her mind.

After a moment, suppressing his turbulent emotions, he brought the topic back to the most pressing issue at hand.

"Ignore those irrelevant people, Xie Jue. I want to ask you, didn't you already give up on becoming an experimental subject? Why did you change your mind?"

Xie Jue lowered his eyes, staring at the worn tips of his shoes, his Adam's apple bobbing. "At first I just came to find you, but..."

He looked up, his eyes showing the stubbornness of a young man, but also a hint of heaviness from being forced by reality. "Professor Fu showed me the data, analyzed my blood sample and physical fitness report. He said... he said my cell activity, nerve reaction speed, and tolerance to early low concentrations of reagents... are all far beyond that of ordinary people. He said that the probability of my participation in the experiment being successful is... more than fifty percent. If successful, I will have the power to protect myself and even others."

His voice was calm yet resolute. He saw images of ordinary people struggling to survive on the outskirts of the safe zone being chased and torn apart by incredibly fast zombies; he also saw arrogant superhumans looking down on them, these "burdens," with disdain.

“But there’s still a fifty percent chance of failure,” Josie had to remind him of this harsh reality.

Xie Jue remained unmoved. "Sister, fifty percent is enough. I want to take the gamble!"

Those monsters outside are getting faster and smarter every day. Superhumans are getting stronger too! Ordinary people are living like rats in the gutter.

He practiced desperately every day, but no matter how fast the knife was, could it be faster than the wind blade of a wind-type ability user?

No matter how strong you are, can you withstand a slap from a powerful zombie?

He couldn't wait! He didn't want to die silently out there one day.

He'd rather gamble his life here.

The boy's eyes were slightly red, a reflection of his intense desire for power and his resistance to his own insignificance.

Josie sighed, "But if you wait a little longer, the success rate of the experiment might increase."

Xie Jue raised his head again, all hesitation and fear replaced by a resolute determination to go all in.

A burning flame flickered in those clear eyes. "Sister, if the experiment is delayed for a year or two, the zombies will have already evolved. I'll be practicing desperately outside every day, and if I encounter an evolved zombie, I might lose my life."

Now that Josie has been found and is safe, he should make a choice about his own life.

He didn't want to be the one who needed her to distract him and protect him forever.
