Chapter 129 Scorching Breath

Chapter 129 Scorching Breath

His movements were as fast as a ghost, the specially made short blade in his hand drawing a cold trajectory in the air before precisely piercing the evolved zombie's head.

Immediately afterwards, he shifted his feet slightly, his figure blurred again, and appeared behind another zombie as if by teleportation, elbowing and stabbing with clean and swift movements, without a single unnecessary step.

In just a few breaths, the surrounding zombies were cleared away.

The team, which had been tense and preparing for battle, relaxed and looked at Xie Jue with a thirst for power.

The group quickly cleared out the remaining ordinary zombies and, guided by Xie Jue, found a relatively sturdy small building with intact doors and windows as a temporary shelter.

As night deepened, the group, exhausted from a long day, began to snore softly.

Josie stood in the doorway, her gaze piercing through the broken window frame, looking out at the ruins swallowed by darkness.

She glanced at her wristwatch; it was almost nine o'clock, and Jinxing still hadn't returned.

Could there be a problem with the plan?

She paced back and forth, unable to calm her mind.

"Sister, it's getting late, you should go and rest." Xie Jue walked to her side. Although his handsome face didn't show much expression, his voice was full of concern.

Josie shook her head. "No need, I'll keep watch. We're counting on you to protect us all day. You should go to sleep."

"I'm not sleepy."

Even if you're not sleepy, go take a nap.

Xie Jue pursed his lips and simply sat down not far from her, dozing off while keeping her company.

After the room quieted down, Josie, with her arms crossed, still paced back and forth every now and then, her eyes constantly watching the movements outside.

After an unknown amount of time, the air seemed to have a slightly imperceptible distortion.

Fu Jinxing's figure, like a drop of water merging into the night, suddenly coalesced and became clear before Qiao Xi.

He didn't even give her time to react. He stretched out his long arm, still smelling of blood, and pulled her into his embrace.

"XiXi, I'm back."

His voice was low and hoarse, carrying the weariness of surviving a disaster, but also a sense of relief at having something lost and then found again.

Josie's heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally settled down. Her hands instinctively wrapped around his strong waist, feeling the powerful heartbeat beneath his chest.

She was so engrossed in this sense of security that she didn't realize how tightly he held her, as if he wanted to crush her and embed her into his very bones.

“Brother Jinxing, I’m so glad you’re alright…” Qiao Xi’s voice was hoarse, but filled with joy.

Then she remembered that he had worked hard all day and probably hadn't eaten yet, so she gently patted his tense arm and said, "Brother Jinxing, eat something and rest for a while. You must be exhausted. Get some rest for the night."

In the stillness of the night, the sounds of snoring rose and fell from the apartment building.

There were two superhumans on night watch. After greeting them, Fu Jinxing went to eat and wash up.

Josie was also tired. She looked around and found a relatively clean spot on the ground to make do.

Then Fu Jin walked over and said, "Xi Xi, come this way."

There were several people in the room, so Josie had to walk past them toward Fu Jin outside the door.

Fu Jinxing led her to a small room inside.

“There are space-age ability users traveling with us. These sheets are clean. You can sleep here.” Just like the habit of taking care of her for many years.

Qiao Xi felt a warmth in her heart, knowing that Fu Jinxing had specially prepared this for her.

Who would rather sleep on a cold, dusty floor than in a bed?

She didn't refuse and lay down comfortably, her body sinking into the thin blanket that smelled of sunshine.

However, the next second, she saw Fu Jinxing spread his coat, which was stained with dust and blood, on the ground, preparing to sleep on the ground.

Most of the windowpane was shattered, and a cool night breeze blew in.

Qiao Xi looked at the old but spacious wooden bed, then at the thin coat on the floor, and almost instinctively blurted out, "Brother Jinxing, the bed is big, come and sleep here."

As soon as she said it, she realized it was inappropriate.

In the apocalypse, it is common for men and women to sleep together fully clothed, but that is a compromise made out of necessity.

The word "bed" seems to naturally carry a hint of ambiguity and privacy.

Sure enough, she saw Fu Jinxing pause in his act of lying down. In the darkness, his eyes seemed to instantly become unfathomable, like the deep sea with its surging undercurrents.

He was silent for a few seconds, his voice lower and hoarse than usual, as if he was trying hard to suppress something: "It's okay, I can make do for one night."

As Josie watched his tall figure curled up on the cold floor beside the bed, the awkwardness in her heart was instantly replaced by heartache.

She put aside those complicated thoughts and insisted, "The floor is cold and hard, but the bed is wide and at least clean. Lie down on it."

After saying that, as if afraid of going back on her word, she quickly turned over to face the wall, wrapped herself tightly in a thin blanket, leaving only half of the bed empty.

Fu Jinxing stared at her retreating figure, a slight smile playing on his lips.

The sound of rustling clothes could be heard in the darkness.

Josie held her breath, feeling the mattress beside her sink slightly.

A scent that blended the crispness of soap with his own unique aroma approached, instantly tensing her entire body, making the blood beneath her skin seem to boil.

She subconsciously shrank further against the wall, almost pressing herself against the cold surface, leaving an excessively spacious area for the tall man beside her.

Fu Jinxing lay down and turned his head to look at the girl curled up in a small ball next to him.

In the darkness, the smile on his lips deepened, and then he stretched out his long arm, passing it through her slender waist, and with a slight effort, pulled her away from the cold wall and back to the center of the bed.

Qiao Xi gasped softly, then suddenly opened her eyes. In the darkness, she could only make out his blurry outline. "Brother Jinxing?"

The man's warm breath fell on her cheek, making her heart pound like a drum.

When facing her, Fu Jinxing could never remain calm; the soft body in his arms and the faint fragrance almost overwhelmed his proud self-control.

He didn't want to expose the ugly desires surging within him that might frighten her.

He simply tightened his arms, bringing her back closer to his chest, rested his chin on the top of her head, and said in a deliberately slow, coaxing tone, "Silly Xixi, it's so wide, you won't be comfortable sleeping on such a small space. Besides, it's too cold against the wall."

His large, warm palm pressed against her waist through the thin fabric of her clothes.

Josie's body remained stiff, the presence of the hand around her waist was too strong, radiating a constant stream of scalding heat.

Her slight, uneasy shift immediately drew a husky question from the man behind her: "Can't you sleep?"

"Um... a little," Josie mumbled, trying to create some distance.

But the hands around his waist were like iron hoops, not loosening their grip at all.

"Close your eyes and relax."

Fu Jinxing's deep voice sounded behind her ear, his warm breath brushing against her earlobe.
