Chapter 232 There's Good News

Chapter 232 There's Good News

The base operated smoothly for the next few days.

With the efforts of earth-elemental ability users and everyone else, new residential buildings rose up one after another, neat and sturdy.

In the planned plantation, growth-enhancing ability users work daily, and the fruits and vegetables grow vigorously, bearing abundant fruit, full of vitality and hope.

The fear of the early apocalypse gradually faded from people's faces, replaced by anticipation for the future.

But beneath this calm, Josie's anxiety only grew.

That day, Jiang Xiao approached Qiao Xi, who was inspecting the premises, and made a suggestion: "Sister Xi Xi, we now have more than twenty children at our base. It's not a good idea for them to run around all day. Shouldn't we find a way to let them learn something?"

Upon hearing this, Josie's eyes lit up, and she patted her shoulder approvingly: "Your suggestion is excellent! Children are the hope of the future and must be nurtured properly. I'll leave this matter to you. Quickly compile a list of people in the base who have teaching experience, and we'll set up the school."

"Okay! I'll go right now!" Jiang Xiao smiled sweetly after receiving the affirmation and ran off with great enthusiasm.

After finishing a few chores, Josie strolled up the tall city wall as usual.

The setting sun cast a long shadow over her, and in the distance lay desolate ruins, bathed in the golden-red light of the sunset, exuding an invisible pressure amidst the silence.

Xie Jue is leading the team on duty today.

The young man stood tall and straight, wearing a well-fitting combat uniform, meticulously patrolling the area.

Upon seeing Josie, his cold expression immediately melted away, and he strode over.

"Sister," he called out, his voice carrying a barely perceptible dependence.

“Xiao Jue,” Qiao Xi smiled at him, “has anything unusual happened outside these past few days? That Qin Feng… hasn’t shown up again?”

“No,” Xie Jue shook his head, his gaze sweeping across the city. “He hasn’t appeared since he left that time.”

He gestured to his team members to continue patrolling, while he naturally stayed by Josh's side.

"Go ahead and get busy, I'll just stay here for a while," Josie said, gazing into the distance.

Xie Jue, standing beside him, remained motionless.

Josie turned to look at him with some surprise: "What's wrong? Is there something you want to tell your sister?"

In front of outsiders, Xie Jue is like a lone wolf—sharp, incisive, and aggressive.

But only in front of Josie would he put away all his sharp edges and coldness, revealing the big boy who still longed for care.

He pursed his lips and said softly, "I just realized... it's been so long since I've spent some quiet time with my sister like this. I wanted to keep you company."

Josie's heart softened, and her tone became even gentler: "Okay, then I'll stand here with you for a while and chat."

Xie Jue's eyes lit up instantly, as if starlight had fallen into them.

The two stood side by side on the top of the wall, gazing into the distance.

The evening breeze ruffled Josie's hair, brushed against Xie Jue's arm, and carried a faint fragrance.

The boy's fingers, hanging by his sides, curled slightly.

"Sister," he asked softly, "will you still go out often in the future?"

“Yes,” Josie nodded, “We won’t stay in the base forever. Too much comfort will make people lose their vigilance and develop a fear of the outside world. Going out periodically is necessary.”

"Then..." Xie Jue's heart jumped, filled with cautious anticipation, "Next time you go out, can you take me with you? I will become very strong and can protect you."

Josie smiled upon hearing this and turned to look at him: "Sure, you can come with me anytime if you want."

Upon receiving the promised refusal, I couldn't help but smile, and a huge joy welled up in my heart.

The two chatted for a while longer, and Josie's gaze unconsciously swept across the distant horizon.

Suddenly, she paused, then grabbed Xie Jue's sleeve, her voice filled with uncertain urgency: "Xiao Jue! Look over there at the mouth of the ravine! Is there a figure moving there?"

The distance was too far, and all she could see were some blurry little black dots moving around, but Josie's heart was inexplicably racing.

Xie Jue was caught off guard by her sudden approach. The woman's faint fragrance and the warmth of her fingertips seeped through the fabric, causing his muscles to tense instantly and his mind to go almost blank.

He forced himself to concentrate and gazed into the distance in the direction she pointed.

“Yes,” he took a deep breath, trying to make his voice sound steady, “someone has returned… judging from the group and equipment, it should be Professor Fu and his team!”

"Really?" Josie released her grip in surprise, her face instantly lighting up with a bright smile, all her worries vanishing. "That's great! Xiao Jue, let's go down and get them!"

As she spoke, she turned around impatiently and ran briskly towards the foot of the city wall.

Xie Jue watched her retreating figure without a backward glance, the light that had just appeared in his eyes gradually dimming until it settled into a desolate darkness.

Sister Xixi... when will you be able to worry about me like this, and be overjoyed for me like this?

By the time Josie strode out of the base gate, the figures of the group in the distance had become much clearer.

Although her face was still not clear, Qiao Xi recognized Fu Jinxing at a glance from the leader's upright posture and steady steps.

Unable to contain her excitement, she jogged over to meet him.

As the group drew closer, everyone looked weary from their journey, but their eyes remained bright. There were no casualties, suggesting that although the trip had been arduous, nothing serious had happened.

"Is everyone alright? Did you encounter any danger on the way?"

As Qiao Xi asked, her gaze remained fixed on Fu Jinxing, looking him up and down to make sure he was alright.

The team members looked at each other, their faces revealing knowing smiles.

"Don't worry, Sister Xixi, we can solve anything together!"

"That's right, with Professor Fu here, we'll definitely all come back safe and sound!"

They chatted and laughed, then very tactfully quickened their pace, pulling and tugging as they walked past Qiao Xi and Fu Jinxing, leaving the two of them alone.

As they passed through the doorway, someone patted Xie Jue on the shoulder, who was looking in their direction with a complicated expression. Xie Jue nodded haphazardly, but his gaze remained fixed on the two people who had been reunited after so long.

Fu Jinxing's face showed the fatigue of a long journey, but when he saw Qiao Xi, a warm smile appeared in his eyes behind his glasses.

He naturally took her hand; his fingertips were slightly cool, yet they carried a reassuring strength.

"You've been waiting for me here all this time?" he asked softly, his tone carrying a hint of tenderness.

“Yes,” Josie nodded emphatically, squeezing his hand in return, “I was so worried. I’m so glad you’re all alright.”

Fu Jinxing gently squeezed her palm: "I'm sorry to have worried Xixi. But I have good news to tell you."

"Huh? What's the good news?" Josie looked up at him curiously.
