Chapter Eighty: Now You Can Try It
A group of fierce-looking men hesitated.
Seeing their hesitation, the man held captive by Josie suppressed his anger and shouted, "Big brother, second brother, are you going to abandon me for a woman?"
The man who was speaking had already been stabbed; if he were crippled, he would be of no value to them.
But they can't tell the truth to their subordinates right now, otherwise who will be willing to risk their lives for them in the future?
"Exchange! You're our brother who'd risk his life for us. She's just a woman. We'll go back and bring her to you in exchange."
After hearing what their leader said, the fierce boy next to him seemed to relax a little. "Then you guys go quickly!"
The men walked away, turning back every few steps.
"When was your sister taken away by them?" Josie turned to ask him.
"I searched for two days before I found out I'd been kidnapped..."
As if recalling some unpleasant scene, the boy's dark eyes suppressed pain and hatred.
"So you were discovered by them when you were trying to rescue your sister..."
The boy nodded. "Mm."
"You've done a great job."
This child was more astute and courageous than many children. From the first time he dared to step forward and give her directions, she knew that this child was extraordinary.
Such a person, given enough opportunities in the apocalypse, would surely achieve extraordinary things.
"Oh no! If I were stronger, I could protect my sister and she wouldn't be hurt by those beasts."
Josie didn't say much; this was the norm in the apocalypse, a tragedy that happened every day.
Since he had helped me, I should repay him; perhaps things will turn around.
But many more people may be harmed without anyone's help, ending their lives in despair.
But she is not a savior. The world has become like this, and she cannot control so many people.
Now, it's difficult for her to live alone outside the safe zone. If she encounters a powerful evolved zombie, she might become its meal.
The boy stood with his shoulders very straight, seemingly processing his emotions alone, his eyes fixed on the road ahead...
"Look, my brothers have already gone back and brought his sister over. Can you let me stop the bleeding first?"
The man had lost too much blood and his face was deathly pale. He was actually taller than Josie, but the woman had been very nimble, and he was worried that if he didn't subdue her immediately, he would get injured again.
Josie kicked his knee, forcing him to kneel down again as he tried to get up. "Behave yourself. You'd better pray they come back soon, or you'll just be stuck like this..."
The man turned around and glared fiercely at Josie.
Josie completely ignored the unspoken threat in his eyes, but the boy next to her simply grabbed the knife handle and stabbed it in.
"Ah! You little beast, what are you doing?" the man howled in pain, his eyes no longer filled with ferocity, only with agony.
The boy remained unusually calm, saying, "If you glare at me once, I'll stab you again."
After that, the man dared not cause any more trouble, and covered his injured arm with sweat dripping down his face.
Everyone's eyes were fixed on the front, and time seemed to slow down incredibly.
Finally... several figures appeared in the direction of the tent area.
It's them!
After the boy finished speaking, he rushed forward.
Josie saw several men carrying a bag that covered the girl's upper body, leaving only her feet exposed.
"elder sister!"
The man pushed aside the boy who rushed in front of him and went straight to Josh.
"We've delivered the people you wanted. Now... give us back our brothers."
"Open the bag."
The men didn't move, and Josie's tone turned colder: "If you don't open it and let me see clearly, this deal doesn't count."
"Big brother, second brother, quick, open it and let her see, I can't hold on any longer."
The man's body was already swaying precariously.
But while the men over there were still hesitating, Josie immediately saw the problem.
His gaze fell on the woman who had been thrown to the ground. She seemed to move slightly, but the movement was not significant.
My heart sank; this was probably not a good sign!
The boy tried to rush forward several times, but was blocked by the men.
"Okay, we'll reveal your face so you can recognize it, but once we give you the person, you must immediately hand over our people to us."
Josie took a light breath and nodded, "Okay."
One of the men, who had a scar on his face, stared at Josie, slowly crouched down, and used a knife to cut open her pocket.
He pulled down the burlap sack, revealing a delicate, pale face.
She seemed to hear her brother's calls, slowly opened her eyes, and then gave a weak smile.
"elder sister!"
"Right? The person is now in your hands."
As they were talking, several men stepped forward and started pulling at their people.
But his gaze remained fixed on Josie.
Josie knew exactly what these desperate men were thinking. She sneered, "Want to die? Try it now."
After saying this, the men quickly looked away and dragged their people away from the place.
"Xiao Jue, don't cry, your sister is fine."
The area exposed by pulling down the pocket was covered in bruises, and there was even blood at the corner of his mouth.
"They hit you?" The boy bit his lip, tears streaming down his face. "I'm going to kill them!"
Josie didn't go forward; she stood at a distance and turned her head in another direction.
"No, Xiao Jue, all I want is for you to live peacefully. Don't go looking for them..."
Her voice was already very weak, and she was panting heavily after saying just a few words.
The boy clearly sensed something was wrong. "Sister, sister, what's wrong with you?"
His voice involuntarily trembled with tears, "Sister, don't be afraid, I'll take you to see a doctor."
After saying that, he quickly got up, grabbed the bag, and tried to drag his sister away.
"Xiao Jue, no... come here, I have something to tell you."
"No, I'll take you to see a doctor."
Upon hearing this, Josie turned and walked towards them.
“Your brother is right, you are injured. We will take you to see a doctor first.”
But the girl shook her head, "It's too late..."
As she spoke, her face contorted in pain, "Xiao Jue, you must take good care of yourself from now on, you must... be strong."
Her unfocused gaze drifted towards Josie, a tear slid down her cheek, and she finally whispered two words, "Thank you..."
As the last note faded, she turned her head away and remained completely still.
"elder sister!"
The boy rushed forward and hugged his only family member tightly. "Sister, you lied to me. You'll be alright, right? You said you'd be there for me as I grow up..."
The boy's sorrowful voice made passersby look on with pity.
But such scenes play out every day; they can barely take care of themselves, let alone help others.
Josie stood not far away, motionless, just staring at the boy's heartbroken and desperate back...
