Chapter Forty-Eight: He's Waiting for Her to Grow Up

Josie tried to pull it out, but instead of pulling it out, the man tightened his grip.

The carriage was cramped, and she couldn't make any bigger movements, as that would surely be noticed. She could only let him hold her hand in his palm.

His burning heat penetrated through the two thin layers of fabric and reached her, reminding her of their passion the night before.

She couldn't help but turn and glare at him.

Feng Ye simply leaned back in his chair and smiled at her.

The silence in the carriage was quickly broken. Fu Jinxing, sitting in the front row, spoke up: "Thank you for taking care of Xixi during this time."

"Are you a member of Sister Xixi's family?" Zhao Wenjing couldn't help but interject. "Actually, it's always been Sister Xixi who has been taking care of us."

"Although Xixi is not my family, she is no different from my closest relatives."

"It's truly a rare and precious fate that we can meet again in this world," Chen Qiurong remarked with emotion.

In this apocalyptic world littered with corpses, countless families are torn apart, and reuniting with old friends is harder than winning the lottery.

"Yes, I will not let her be in danger again in the future."

Josie never imagined that one day, when she met Fu Jinxing, their roles would be reversed.

In her memory, Fu Jinxing had always been taciturn, while she was always chattering and making a lot of noise.

But he was incredibly patient, never finding her talkative, and would even occasionally chime in with a word of encouragement to keep talking.

She had never seen him chat like that with someone he wasn't very familiar with.

As the conversation progressed, Fu Jinxing managed to extract from Zhao Wenjing and Chen Qiurong the details of how they met...

The town was small, and when they encountered small groups of zombies, they chose to either go around them or run them over.

After leaving the city, the convoy did not choose the highway, but instead traveled along remote country roads.

At noon, the convoy stopped beside a grove of trees.

The officer walked to Fu Jinxing's car window: "Professor Fu, after lunch, continue your journey. We will reach the safe zone in another day."

If it weren't for the need to avoid zombies and if we could travel on the highway without any obstacles, it would only take two or three hours.

"good."

After Fu Jinxing responded, the officer outside opened the door, and he got out of the car.

After getting out of the car, Fu Jinxing stood quietly to the side and waited.

Feng Ye held her hand the whole time, and even though Fu Jinxing was standing outside, Feng Ye still showed no sign of letting go.

"Let go," she whispered.

"Let go? I'm afraid he'll see." Feng Ye had a carefree smile on his face, but his eyes were cold.

Josh found him a bit strange. They were stopping for a break and everyone was getting out of the car, so why was he holding her hand like that?

"This has nothing to do with anyone else, I need to get off the bus to relieve myself."

Feng Ye's gaze swept across her face, as if to confirm her statement.

Fu Jinxing stood outside for a while and noticed that the back door was still closed. Qiao Xi and the man next to her seemed to be arguing.

Just as he was about to step forward, the car door was pushed open, and a long leg wearing military boots stepped out first.

Next, Josie came down from inside.

Fu Jinxing's gaze lingered on Feng Ye's wild and masculine face for a moment before moving past him to look at Qiao Xi, who was getting off the bus behind them.

"Sitting for too long will stunt your blood circulation. Get up and walk around."

Josie responded and turned to look around.

Because there were no zombies, all one could see were green mountains and clear waters, which made people feel relaxed without realizing it.

A slight smile appeared on Josie's lips.

“Xi Xi,” Fu Jinxing suddenly spoke up, “why haven’t you contacted me all these years? You’ve even changed your number?”

Josie blinked and replied casually, "I've grown up, haven't I? I can't keep bothering you like I did when I was a kid."

Upon hearing this, Fu Jinxing frowned slightly. "I don't feel like you're clinging to me. Have you forgotten what you said when we were little?"

"What did you say? I said so much, I don't remember it."

Fu Jinxing gave her no way out, saying, "You told me to wait for you, that you'll grow up eventually, and then you can be my girlfriend."

Josie was a little embarrassed that he would actually say it, and her ears were burning. "Who hasn't said a few silly things when they were little? Children say the darndest things, don't take it seriously."

"But I've been waiting." The eyes behind the glasses shone brightly. "Waiting for you to grow up."

"Brother Jinxing, it's all in the past..."

After hearing Fu Jinxing's words, she knew that she had mostly misunderstood back then.

Someone deliberately led her to overhear Fu Jinxing and that girl talking about love, and then just happened to let her witness her and Fu Jinxing's "intimate" actions.

At that time, she was sensitive and vulnerable, and didn't even have the courage to confront him directly, because she had no grounds to stand up for him.

Fu Jinxing never made any promises to her; it was she who kept pestering him.

On what grounds should she demand an explanation from a neighbor who has never made any promises?

After leaving, she forcibly removed Fu Jinxing from her heart.

After the excruciating pain and profuse bleeding came a long period of numbness.

But she pulled through and began a life without Fu Jinxing.

Fu Jinxing noticed that something was wrong with her and realized that he had neglected her all these years because he was busy with experiments.

It's okay, there's plenty of time later, he can make it up to him slowly.

As before, he looked up and gently touched the top of her soft hair, his eyes softening slightly. "Okay, if you don't want to talk about it, then don't."

While the two were talking, the soldiers had already prepared self-heating rice and were serving it to them.

"Come and eat, everyone!"

Although Qiao Xi and the others had dry rations, they still received some food thanks to Fu Jinxing's connections.

Not much, probably just a little less than half a bowl.

But in the end times, it is a rare delicacy.

There were even two small pieces of meat inside.

Josie was already a little hungry, and seeing the meat made her mouth water. She picked up her chopsticks.

Just as I picked up my chopsticks, two more pieces of meat suddenly appeared in the bowl.

She looked up at Fu Jinxing.

Fu Jinxing's voice was gentle, "I'm not hungry. You should eat more. You weren't fat to begin with, and now you're even thinner. You need to gain weight!"

Just as Josie was about to refuse, she suddenly heard a jumble of voices.

Fu Jinxing also turned his head.

A large group of humans suddenly appeared a few dozen meters away from them.

They were a mix of old and young, men and women, all incredibly thin, and they were running this way.

"Soldiers, have you come to rescue us? We've finally been here! Thank you! Thank you!"

After saying that, the crowd pushed past the soldiers on the outermost edge and squeezed towards the middle.

"It smells delicious! You have food? That's great, we've been starving for days."

The refugees snatched the lunchboxes from the soldiers' hands, and some who didn't manage to grab any even picked up the packaging bags on the ground.

Seeing this, Qiao Xi quickly started shoveling rice into her mouth and nudged Fu Jinxing next to her with her elbow, "Eat up!"

No sooner had they finished speaking than two teenagers saw them and rushed toward them.
