Chapter Ninety-Six: This is Reality

Chapter Ninety-Six: This is Reality

Xie Jue was taken aback, a hint of hesitation appearing in his usually emotionless eyes. "So... you're willing?"

Xie Jue's words also drew Lu Yuyang's attention to Qiao Xi.

Josie didn't look at him, but slowly nodded to Xie Jue, "Yes, I did it voluntarily."

After she finished speaking, she didn't notice the smile that appeared on the man's face.

Just then, Josie suddenly heard a sound, immediately stopped talking, and listened intently.

Lu Yuyang clearly heard it too, and he was the first to walk out of the restaurant.

The cold morning wind, carrying the stench of decay, swept over me, followed by a familiar roar from not far away.

"It's zombies!" Xie Jue's voice changed slightly. "They've gotten in!"

In a short while, the first zombie appeared at the entrance to the complex shelter passageway, followed by a second and a third, as zombies surged in like a black tide.

They staggered along, but became even more excited when they smelled the strong stench of blood.

"Someone just managed to escape without properly closing the manhole cover, which allowed these things to crawl in."

If that's the case, the heavy stench of blood here will attract all the zombies on the street.

Returning via the same route is virtually impossible.

"This way!" Qiao Xi whispered, pulling Xie Jue along as they rushed through another door.

Last night, when she transformed and scouted the area, she roughly surveyed the terrain and knew which way to go to avoid encountering zombies.

Shortly after they escaped from the restaurant, hordes of zombies, like hyenas attracted by the smell of meat, surged into the restaurant.

The rotting feet stomped on the pool of blood, making a sticky, slapping sound.

The various sounds intertwined, casting a sinister atmosphere over the entire shelter.

"Dead end!" Lu Yuyang suddenly stopped in his tracks.

The end of the passage was completely blocked by collapsed concrete.

"Try another route, over there!"

The three of them continued to change direction, as if they were navigating through a maze.

"Sister! Behind us!"

After Xie Jue reminded her, Josie turned around.

The dark mass of zombies had filled the passageway, with the first few less than ten meters away from them.

A zombie dressed in a security guard uniform, its jaw detached, still lunged forward with its gaping maw.

Just then, Lu Yuyang spotted the rusty metal staircase not far away.

Lu Yuyang flung out three ice spikes that pierced the eye sockets of the security guard zombie, then dragged the two of them toward the fire escape.

"Go upstairs!"

Xie Jue was pushed in front, and he nimbly climbed the stairs.

The rusty metal staircase groaned underfoot, unable to bear the weight.

Josie immediately followed, and by the time Lu Yuyang was the last to come up, the area below was already packed with zombies.

The zombie's fingernails scraped against the iron bars, making a piercing sound. The three glanced down and immediately turned to walk inside.

The second floor was clearly a supply warehouse, with various snack and garbage bags scattered on the floor.

They hid the food here and chained up the swaying gate.

Lu Yuyang kicked hard, breaking the chain. As the three rushed into the warehouse, they first smelled an unpleasant odor, probably from moldy food.

With the immediate danger over, the three of them naturally stopped to loot the supply warehouse.

"There's a window over here." Xie Jue spotted a window in the corner with his sharp eyes.

After Lu Yuyang and Qiao Xi filled their backpacks, they quickly stepped forward.

The glass window was broken, and as the cold wind rushed in, they could also see the densely packed zombies in the courtyard below, like a pot of boiling rotting flesh.

"There's only one warehouse up here, and there's no other way out, so we have to climb out from here."

The good thing is that there's a stone slab extending out from the window, about a foot wide, which should be fine for normal walking. But less than three meters below are zombies...

“Walk along the outer edge, is there a problem?” Lu Yuyang turned to look at her and Xie Jue.

"Yes, that's fine."

"Then you and Xie Jue go out first, I'll cover the rear."

As he spoke, he stepped aside, and Xie Jue, without any hesitation, turned and left.

Despite his young age, he walked very steadily, neither attracting the attention of the zombies below nor being afraid to move forward.

Next was Josie, whose steps also landed steadily on the stone slab.

The stench of rotting zombies was so strong that it was hard to open one's eyes.

Josie's temples were throbbing; she had to concentrate fully to avoid slipping.

Gradually, they moved away from that window.

Just as they were about to round the corner, a piercing, inhuman scream shattered the sky.

Two zombies suddenly raised their heads from the horde.

Their eyes weren't just ordinary grayish-white; they had a lively, almost ethereal quality.

"Don't discover it!"

Just as Qiao Xi was about to remind Lu Yuyang, a fireball suddenly hurtled towards her.

"run!"

Lu Yuyang's ice shield condensed into an arc in the air, just enough to block the incoming fireball.

The high-temperature steam instantly blurred my vision.

The zombies below were completely agitated by the commotion, and they eagerly crowded towards the wall.

Their hands kept gripping the air, the taller zombie's fingertips just half an arm's length away from grabbing them...

Xie Jue quickly started running, with Qiao Xi close behind.

Just as they were jumping over the wall, a blast of air threw her away.

The surrounding zombies immediately swarmed forward, but Xie Jue, who had landed first, rushed up and swiftly dealt with two of them.

By the time Josie got up and dealt with the remaining zombies, Lu Yuyang had already landed safely.

If they were facing a single evolved zombie, it wouldn't be difficult for them to deal with it. But now there are two evolved zombies, and if they're not careful, Xie Jue could lose his life here.

Lu Yuyang and Qiao Xi both knew the outcome, so neither of them mentioned staying behind to deal with the two evolved zombies.

"Evolved zombies are smarter than ordinary zombies. We need to get out of here quickly, or they will definitely catch up with us."

But the streets are now filled with zombies, and they have to get rid of them if they want to leave.

"Kill them!"

With no other choice, the three decided to fight their way through.

Having just crossed a street, Lu Yuyang quickly turned around. The ice shield steamed with white mist under the flames of the fire-type zombies, and the crystal-clear ice crystals kept peeling off and regenerating.

"Sister! Watch out!"

Josie suddenly crouched down, and a blade of wind grazed her hair, leaving a three-inch-deep cut on the wall behind her.

Josie's temples throbbed.

These two evolved zombies caught up with us so quickly.

Lu Yuyang quickly activated his superpowers to eliminate all the ordinary zombies in the vicinity.

"Lu Yuyang, we must conserve our supernatural abilities to deal with them."

This is bound to be a protracted battle. Although her shapeshifting ability can assist in attacks, it can only help her protect herself at most.

"I'll go harass that fire-type zombie, you find the right opportunity to attack."

After saying that, Josie ran towards the fire-type zombie, turning into a stone and rolling to its side just as the fireball was about to hit it...

Xie Jue watched silently as the two worked together seamlessly. Although they didn't kill the zombie immediately, they made it run around like a headless fly.

Only now did he realize that his training during this period was completely useless against the evolved zombies.
