Chapter Ninety-Two: The Woman's Cry

Chapter Ninety-Two: The Woman's Cry

"Did you hear that?" Josie immediately lowered her voice and asked softly, her voice barely a whisper.

Lu Yuyang's breathing rhythm changed; he still couldn't fall asleep.

"Yes, it's a woman crying."

The sobbing was very low, like a whimper made after someone covered their mouth, and it came intermittently from the left side of their room.

Josie tiptoed to her feet, took out a dagger from her clothes, and the cool metallic touch reassured her slightly.

"Shall we go out and take a look?"

"good."

Just as Qiao Xi and Lu Yuyang were about to wake Xie Jue, Xie Jue woke up on his own.

"Xiao Jue, we're going out to check out the situation here. You'd better come with us."

Xie Jue rubbed his eyes, and his gaze immediately cleared. "Okay, I'll go with you."

The three of them slipped out of their residence like shadows.

The surroundings were quiet, making the suppressed sobs all the more distinct.

They spotted a thin figure in a corner, in a place that looked like a storage room.

She hunched over, seemed to gag a few times, and then continued to cry.

Finally, she noticed something was wrong behind her and turned around to look at them.

Upon seeing Josie and the others, she shuddered, a look of panic crossing her face.

"Who's there?" Josie asked, pretending she had just met her.

The figure visibly trembled and turned to run away.

Josie stepped forward and blocked the other person's path, pretending to be particularly understanding: "Why aren't you sleeping in the middle of the night? Did you encounter some difficulties?"

By the dim light, Josie could see that she was a girl in her early twenties, with a dirty face and badly swollen, red eyes.

She was wearing an ill-fitting, oversized T-shirt, and her bare arms were covered in bruises.

"N-nothing..." The girl's voice trembled, her eyes darting behind Josie. "I have to go back. Please, just pretend you didn't see me..."

Just as Josie was about to ask further questions, footsteps came from the other side of the warehouse.

The girl's face turned deathly pale instantly, and she broke free from Josh's hand to run away.

"Stop!" a gruff male voice shouted.

Three men emerged from the shadows, the one in the lead being the man with the buzz cut who had greeted them during the day.

He had a kind smile on his face, but his eyes were as cold as ice.

"Guests, please don't wander around at night," the man with the buzz cut said with a smile. "The shelter isn't very safe at night, you should go back to your rooms and sleep."

Josie noticed that the other two men had their hands behind their backs, clearly hiding weapons.

She nodded, feigning ignorance: "We heard crying and were worried that someone needed help."

"Oh, that's Xiaofang. Her husband was bitten by a zombie a few days ago, and she's a bit emotionally unstable." The man with the buzz cut lied without batting an eye. "We're on our way to comfort her. You should go back and rest; it'll be dawn soon."

Qiao Xi felt Xie Jue beside her tense up.

She quietly reached out and squeezed his hand, signaling him not to make any rash moves.

“Okay, we’ll head back now.” Josie smiled gratefully. “Thank you…”

Back at their lodgings, Xie Jue, who was usually quiet, took the initiative to say, "Sister, there's something wrong here."

Josie knew that he was not like an ordinary child, and the main purpose of this trip was to let them see the darkness of the apocalypse and not to trust people too easily.

"Hmm, what did you figure out?"

"The sister who was secretly crying just now was trembling all over when she looked at those men."

Indeed, if the people in this shelter act too kindly and friendly, it feels very unreal.

On the contrary... the crying girl is the normal one.

“Yes, something’s strange about this place.” Lu Yuyang frowned. “It’s been four months since the apocalypse, where did they get so much fresh meat? I want to find out why.”

The three exchanged a glance, and each saw the same suspicion in the other's eyes.

"I'll go check it out," Lu Yuyang decided. "You and Xie Jue wait here for me to come back. Don't open the door for anyone."

Josie reached out and grabbed him. "No, I'll go. My ability is less likely to alert the enemy."

“You can’t go! It’s too dangerous here. I’d be better off going.” Lu Yuyang immediately objected.

Josie shook her head. "I can transform into all sorts of things now, so I won't easily disturb them. And if I am discovered, I can blend into my surroundings. It's most suitable for me to go and check the situation!"

Seeing that he wanted to say something, Josie cut him off, "That's the decision. Wait for me to come back."

After saying that, she quickly opened the door, turned into a pebble, and rolled out.

Seeing her swift and decisive action, Lu Yuyang withdrew his hand that was about to pull her up.

She didn't choose the path they had just taken, because they had walked that way before, and there were hardly any guards around. Besides, the fact that the girl deliberately chose that place to cry meant it wasn't an important place.

After hesitating for a moment, she turned and walked towards another passage.

After walking for a while, people began patrolling the passageway.

They carried not only knives at their waists, but also guns.

Josie's eyes flickered, and she rolled past their feet.

As she rolled along, she came to the entrance of a warehouse.

There were two guards at the warehouse entrance, talking in hushed tones.

"I'll drug them again tomorrow morning. That woman... I can't stand just looking at her. If it works, I can sleep with her once in a while. Even if I get eaten by zombies in this life, it'll be worth it." The man said, his eyes revealing greed.

"Don't worry, the boss said to kill the men first, and keep the women for fun. We'll deal with them if we break them."

"The last one was pretty good-looking too, but it's a pity she died in less than three days. How boring..."

The man next to him patted him on the shoulder, "As long as we follow the boss and work hard, there are plenty of idiots like this outside, in addition to zombies. We'll be happy as long as we live one day at a time."

"Absolutely! I think it's even better than before the apocalypse. Before the apocalypse, I could never even dream of such a beauty. Just thinking about possibly getting to taste her tomorrow makes me so excited I can't contain myself..."

"You'd better keep your composure and not let them notice. The two men next to her, one big and one small, don't look like they're easy to mess with."

"What are you afraid of? Boss has medicine. No matter how strong they are, one packet of medicine will knock them all out."

"Huh? Do you feel a little chilly?"

"Don't scare me, this is not a place for jokes."

The two looked together at the warehouse behind them, their previously smug and satisfied expressions turning into hesitation and fear.

Josie lay not far from them, her murderous intent almost seeping out from the cracks in the rocks.

After a long while, she finally suppressed her impulse and controlled the deformed stone to slowly roll.

Neither of the two guards noticed that a pebble was slowly rolling over them and into the warehouse.
