Chapter Twenty-One: Extreme Danger

Chapter Twenty-One: Extreme Danger

Chen Qiurong was clearly taken aback for a moment, then said with relief, "Okay, you're young, maybe you can find a better place."

Her wrinkled hand grasped Josie's, her warm, dry palm conveying the care of an elder. "From now on, I'm entrusting Xiaoye to you. You two must support each other and face hardships together. Grandma wishes you a long and peaceful life together."

Seeing the old man's incredibly sincere and earnest expression, Josie was speechless for a moment, and could only respond with a smile: "I will."

There was no way to explain it now, so she simply acquiesced.

When Fengye returns, they will know the truth.

"The outside world is too dangerous. You must not take any risks. Just live a peaceful and stable life..."

Chen Qiurong kept rambling on and on, and Zhao Wenjing couldn't help but speak up: "Grandma, Sister Xixi knows."

"Look at me, I couldn't control myself and said too much."

"No, my mother-in-law is just concerned about us, thank you."

She hadn't felt the care of her elders for many years, and this unexpected warmth warmed her heart, yet she had to cruelly let it go.

Chen Qiurong and Zhao Wenjing were going to work, and Qiao Xi quickly tidied herself up and left the house where she had lived for several days.

When Josie arrived at the entrance of the shelter, Fengye was already waiting there.

The morning light gilded his sharply defined profile, his camouflage uniform encasing his muscular physique, and the steady thud of his military boots on the ground.

Just standing there gives people an invisible sense of security.

Hearing the noise, he turned his head, his eyes reflecting the dawn's light.

"Ready?"

"Well, I came suddenly, so I don't have much to pack." She said as she walked to his side.

"Let's go then." With that, he turned and led the way decisively.

They avoided the main road teeming with zombies, and Feng Ye led her through the balconies of residential buildings.

Below was a dense horde of zombies, and the stench of decay rose up constantly.

Josie nimbly followed behind him, watching him kick a zombie that suddenly pounced on him down the stairs, the severed limbs arcing through the air.

"Can we leave?" Feng Ye pointed to the air conditioner unit on the outer wall.

Josie silently assessed the distance. In her previous life, she had also struggled through three years in the apocalypse, so she was not powerless.

"I'll give it a try,"

After saying that, she deftly flipped over the railing, her fingers gripping the security bars tightly, her toes precisely finding every protrusion. Her movements were so fluid that Feng Ye raised an eyebrow.

"Jump."

With Feng Ye's low shout, the two fell into the alley one after the other.

A supernatural light emanated from his palm, instantly blasting the heads off several wandering zombies.

The journey that followed seemed meticulously calculated. They navigated through the ventilation ducts of the underground parking garage and around the maze of supermarket shelves, miraculously avoiding the massive horde of zombies and arriving at their destination.

"We've arrived." Feng Ye stopped and looked ahead.

Following the direction she was facing, Josie saw a white building stained with blood—the city center hospital.

The glass doors of the outpatient building were shattered, and a shadowy figure could be vaguely seen moving inside.

“I need you to confirm the number of evolved zombies.” Feng Ye lowered his voice, his burning gaze sweeping over her. “They are more agile and will actively patrol their territory. They are completely different from ordinary zombies. As long as you pay attention, you can find them.”

Josie was secretly surprised. It had only been three months since the apocalypse, and most people couldn't even handle ordinary zombies, yet he had already figured out the characteristics of evolved zombies.

Indeed, the strong adapt to any environment faster and better than others, seizing the initiative.

"clear."

After saying that, she was about to turn around and leave when Feng Ye raised his hand to stop her.

His eyes burned with intensity. “Under any circumstances, ensure your own safety first. Don’t get trapped; you must get out within two hours.”

After hearing his words, Josie's opinion of him improved a little.

Even if he had a conscience, she wouldn't risk her life to do someone a favor, even if he didn't say anything.

The reason I agreed was because I saw his potential and wanted to do him a good thing.

For anyone else, it would be unthinkable.

"Okay, I got it. I'm off."

After saying that, she waved her hand dismissively and turned to leave.

She could feel that gaze following her the whole time.

Yes, just you wait and see!

Remember this well!

The nearby zombies smelled the scent and turned to pounce on her.

The road outside the hospital was wide, but there were very few zombies.

She didn't transform; she just ran and dodged, and soon managed to rush through the gate.

The inside and the outside are like two completely different worlds.

Even the garden outside the outpatient building was teeming with wandering zombies, and the ground was covered with dried, mottled bloodstains.

Two zombies rushed up to her, excitedly "ho ho," ready to have a feast, but Josie's figure vanished in the blink of an eye.

She rolled to a slightly sparser area and immediately transformed back into human form, continuing to run into the outpatient building.

Just then, a zombie in the garden caught her attention.

Even though she was far away and none of the zombies in that area noticed her, the zombie was already running towards her at top speed.

Its movements appeared much more agile than the surrounding zombies, and it ran at a speed almost equivalent to a human walking briskly.

But it was too far from Josie, and Josie wasn't planning on waiting for it.

He turned around and rushed to the front of the outpatient building.

Looking inside, Josie gasped in shock.

Even though she had lived two lives and had spent three years in the apocalypse, she still couldn't help but feel a chill when she saw the densely packed dark figures in the outpatient hall.

But with evolved zombies approaching from behind, she had no time to think.

With a determined effort, he turned into a stone and rolled into the outpatient hall.

Countless feet trampled around her, and sometimes she would get stepped on and unable to move.

The further you go in, the dimmer it gets, but once you get used to it, you can still see your surroundings clearly.

After the zombie kicked her against the wall, she slowly rolled along the wall.

As she rolled, she rolled to the bottom of the glass dome in the middle of the hall.

The place was very empty; it should have been the place where the most zombies gathered, but now it was deserted.

Josie had a vague feeling of unease and didn't dare to step into that empty space.

She lay down and looked around, finally deciding to go up the stairs on the side of the hall.

Two hours is too short. She would prefer to have the evolved zombies come to her, which would save a lot of time.

Without thinking twice, Josie immediately rolled down the edge of the stairs.

There were two wandering zombies near the greenery.

After observing them carefully for a while and confirming that they were not evolved zombies, Josie quickly transformed into human form and ran up the stairs.

The zombie noticed her presence and immediately turned around to pounce, but because it couldn't climb stairs, it tripped over the stairs.

Josie quickly ran to the center of the first and second floors.

The zombie at the second-floor stairwell noticed her and tumbled down the stairs.

Once they rolled to his side, Josie gripped the dagger and swiftly plunged it into their heads.

Only then did he stand up and observe the surrounding movements.

An eerie silence fell over the entire outpatient hall as Josh kept turning around, observing everything around him.

Suddenly, an extreme sense of danger made her hair stand on end.
