Chapter Twenty-Six: They've Been Found!

Chapter Twenty-Six: They've Been Found!

"Whether he lives or dies is none of my business."

Her voice was as calm as if she were discussing the weather, and her eyes showed not a trace of emotion.

This isn't out of spite; it's because I genuinely don't care anymore.

In her past life, those zombies not only devoured her flesh and blood, but also ripped Xu Linchuan out of her heart.

Those heart-wrenching pains and those sleepless nights had long since worn away that feeling.

Now her heart will never beat for Xu Linchuan again.

Feng Ye's deep gaze lingered on her face for a moment. Seeing that there was indeed no lingering affection in her eyes, he nodded almost imperceptibly and did not bring up the topic again.

"Let's go back."

He had just turned around and taken half a step when Josh's voice came from behind him: "Wait, Feng Ye."

Feng Ye stopped in his tracks, his black combat boots carving a semi-circle in the dust.

He turned his head to the side, the sunlight casting a sharp shadow on his angular jawline: "What's wrong?"

“We won’t be going back,” Josie said with a slight smile. “We’re getting ready to leave now. Hope we meet again someday.”

In the post-apocalyptic world, convenient transportation is long gone. Once humans settle down in a place, it's usually for a lifetime.

So in her past life, Qiao Xi had never met Feng Ye.

But she hopes there will be a chance to meet again in this lifetime.

After all, I helped him a lot today, and I'm hoping to get on his good side in the future.

She was thinking to herself, but waved casually, "Bye-bye~"

"Where are you going?" Feng Ye's voice suddenly deepened.

Josie glanced at Lu Yuyang beside her. The latter simply stood quietly to the side, wary of his surroundings, and did not disturb their conversation.

“Let’s go to the nearby safe zone,” she said, turning her gaze away. “It should be much safer there than these small shelters.”

"Safe zone?"

"Um."

"Are you sure such a place really exists?" Feng Ye raised an eyebrow almost imperceptibly.

“Of course,” Josie said confidently, “the nearest one is not far from here, it’s only a ten-day or two-week walk away.”

Feng Ye fell silent.

Josie could tell he was weighing the pros and cons, a thoughtful glint in his sharp, eagle-like eyes.

"Hmm? Shall we go then?"

She deliberately dragged out her words and looked up at the sky.

The sun was already setting; if we delayed any longer, we would have to travel in the dark.

“I’ll be with you all,” Feng Ye suddenly spoke, his voice deep and powerful, “as well as Granny Chen and Wenjing.”

Before they could respond, he added, "You two can split the crystal cores as compensation for this trip."

During this period, evolved zombies were extremely rare, and crystal cores were incredibly precious to those with superpowers.

Josie's eyes lit up instantly, not for the crystal cores, but because having a powerful teammate like Fengye would greatly increase their chances of survival.

She nodded without hesitation, then looked at Lu Yuyang beside her, "Can we wait another day?"

Lu Yuyang had already witnessed Feng Ye's strength, so he had no objections: "Alright, let's avoid this place for now and set off together tomorrow morning."

After agreeing on the plan, the three of them walked back the way they came.

With two mutated superhumans protecting her, Josie didn't even need to transform. The zombies that rushed towards her by smell were either charred into charcoal by Feng Ye's lightning or nailed to the wall by Lu Yuyang's ice spikes.

They soon returned safely to the shelter.

"Sister, you didn't leave?"

Zhao Wenjing came out of the room and saw them. Her little face was full of surprise.

Feng Ye strode over. "Wenjing, come here for a second. Is Grandma home? She has something to tell you."

Wenjing said "Oh" and hopped into the house like a little rabbit.

Qiao Xi and Lu Yuyang followed closely behind.

In the dimly lit room, Chen Qiurong, wearing reading glasses, was mending an old garment.

Hearing the noise, she looked up, a hint of surprise flashing in her cloudy eyes: "Xiao Ye, you and Xi Xi didn't leave?"

“If we’re leaving,” Feng Ye’s voice softened unconsciously, “we’ll leave together first thing tomorrow morning.”

Chen Qiurong nodded and put the needle and thread into the tin box: "Then bring everything you need, don't forget anything."

As she spoke, the wrinkles on her face smoothed out, and her face was full of a loving smile.

"Mother-in-law, you and Wenjing pack your things. We'll leave together tomorrow morning."

Zhao Wenjing was taken aback and looked at him in surprise, "Are we... leaving too?"

"Yes, let's leave together first thing tomorrow morning."

Chen Qiurong frowned, her thin hands clutching the mended hem of her clothes. "Xiaoye, Wenjing and I won't go. It's safe and secure here, don't worry."

Feng Ye pursed his lips into a straight line, as if he was thinking about how to persuade them.

Seeing his predicament, Qiao Xi smiled and squatted down next to Chen Qiurong.

“Grandma,” she said softly, her fingers gently resting on the old woman’s trembling hand, “the shelter is too small, and the nearby resources are almost exhausted. The place we’re going to is like a small city, with a hospital and a school. You and Wenjing will live there, a hundred or a thousand times better than here.”

She glanced at Feng Ye, then lowered her voice: "If you don't want Feng Ye to worry, going to the safe zone will truly put his mind at ease. Besides... if Feng Ye really leaves, those men in the shelter won't let Wen Jing off the hook."

Chen Qiurong's hand, covered with age spots, trembled slightly, and her cloudy eyes reddened as she couldn't help but look at her granddaughter.

On the one hand, she didn't want to cause trouble for Feng Ye, and on the other hand, she couldn't let go of her only granddaughter.

After Josh patiently persuaded him, the old man finally relented.

"Xixi, Xiaoye, Wenjing and I are sorry for causing you trouble."

"No trouble at all, it's on my way."

Josie smiled broadly, her appearance quite endearing, as she readily accepted the favor.

Chen Qiurong smiled and agreed, "Okay, let's set off together tomorrow."

As she came out of the room, Feng Ye called out to her, "Thank you."

The coldness in his eyes had dissipated considerably, and even a rare hint of gentleness could be seen.

Josie winked and smiled like a sly fox: "No need to thank me, I always make sure to leave my name when I do good deeds. Just remember to repay this favor when I need it in the future."

Feng Ye was stunned for a moment, and surprisingly, he curled the corners of his mouth into a smile: "Okay."

Before they knew it, it was dawn the next day. As the sky began to lighten, the group quietly got up and started packing.

Early risers were already busy at the shelter.

They moved through the warehouse district silently, like shadows.

Just as they were about to turn into the corridor, Xing Jiao suddenly pushed open the wooden door of the toilet and came out.

Upon seeing this, Josie secretly thought to herself, "Oh no!"

Xing Jiao rubbed her sleepy eyes, and when she saw the scene in front of her, her eyes widened suddenly: "What... what are you doing?"

Zhao Wenjing, who was walking at the front, was also startled and almost dropped the bundle in her hand.

Xing Jiao immediately realized what was happening, her sharp voice piercing the morning tranquility: "You're leaving the shelter?"
