Chapter Twenty-Two: Something's happened!

Chapter Twenty-Two: Something's happened!

Josie's pupils suddenly contracted, turning into an inconspicuous pebble at the last second.

The cold touch of the ground reassured her slightly, but she could still feel her heart pounding.

She remained still and lay there quietly. Soon, she saw a zombie that looked different from the others slowly walking towards the open area under the glass dome.

Its gait was unusually steady, and smooth muscle lines could be vaguely seen beneath the decaying muscle tissue.

What's even more chilling is that the face covered in lividity could make subtle changes in expression—it was sniffing, it was thinking.

"It can think..."

This realization made Josie's breath catch in her throat.

Then I saw the evolved zombie walking towards the stairwell.

It can climb stairs; it really is an evolved zombie!

Josie quickly surveyed her surroundings; there were also many zombies wandering in the corridor on the second floor.

Fine, let's give it a shot!

She is in stone form. No matter how monstrous this zombie is, it can't possibly guess that a stone is human, right?

Clear footsteps echoed one after another in the quiet hall.

Josie watched helplessly as the evolved zombie walked up the steps and stopped in front of her.

It took a few steps on the platform at the corner.

Just when Josie thought it would continue upstairs, it suddenly turned around and walked towards the corner where she was curled up.

A pair of dirty shoes stopped in front of her.

Josie's heart was pounding in her throat. Had it... discovered her?

She had lived for three years in her previous life and had never seen a zombie like this before.

But she had heard of a type of zombie that, in its later stages, could control hordes of zombies, much like a zombie king.

That is—a mind-control type zombie!

Only zombies with the keen ability to detect supernatural energy fluctuations will be able to detect her presence.

Josie took a deep breath. Was she really that lucky?

She had never seen zombies in her previous life, but in this life, after being reborn, she had to come into close contact with them!

The zombie bent down and picked her up from the ground, where she had turned into a pebble.

It did nothing else, just held it in its hand and examined it, seemingly hesitant as to why the food looked somewhat different.

Just as Josie was about to faint from its stench, the evolved zombie seemed to lose interest in her and simply threw her to the ground.

She breathed a sigh of relief, wanting to leave the area as soon as the evolved zombie was gone.

But a minute, ten minutes... an hour passed.

She kept transforming and no one was charging her, so her powers were being consumed in huge quantities.

Moreover, the time agreed upon with Feng Ye was almost up, and she had only discovered two evolved zombies.

She even suspected that the evolved zombie was waiting for her powers to run out before eating her.

Time continued to pass, and the evolved zombie had excellent patience. She tried to roll to the edge of the steps and roll down, looking for a chance to escape.

Who knew that the moment she moved, it would step on her.

After several attempts, she not only failed to roll down the steps, but also got further and further away from them.

Just as she was about to throw herself down through the gap under the glass, she heard a noise from upstairs.

Hehe...

The chaotic footsteps and the excited "hoho" sounds of the zombies created a jumbled mess.

Josie couldn't help but look up, only to see zombies moving in that direction.

Has anyone come in?

Just as this thought crossed her mind, she saw a familiar figure.

After Lu Yuyang forced back the zombies behind him, he was about to go downstairs when he saw a zombie standing at the corner.

Three icicles formed between his slender fingers.

With a whooshing sound, the ice spike aimed straight for the back of the zombie's head.

However, something shocking happened.

The ice spikes suddenly froze a meter away from the zombies, as if they had hit an invisible barrier.

Josie seized the opportunity and instantly reverted to human form, her dagger flashing coldly as she stabbed at the zombie's head.

The zombie dodged the attack by tilting its head at an odd angle, a sneer appearing on its rotting lips, before quickly retreating to avoid the dagger's attack.

"Josh?"

Once freed, Qiao Xi immediately moved closer to Lu Yuyang.

"Are you alright?" Lu Yuyang helped the staggering Qiao Xi up, his icy palms sending chills down her spine.

Josie noticed that his clothes were covered in black blood, indicating that he had fought his way in.

How did you get here?

Shouldn't he be in the shelter?

"Instead of waiting for you in the shelter, I'd rather come with you; perhaps I can still help you."

"Thanks."

I originally wanted to build a relationship with him, in case it came in handy in the future.

But she didn't expect Lu Yuyang to be so sincere, that he would come here for her.

She really didn't expect to encounter a psychic zombie, otherwise she would never have agreed to help Feng Ye.

While the two were talking, several more zombies appeared nearby.

The zombie on the far left has crimson flames burning on its hands, while the one on the right has sharp earth spikes growing out.

Lu Yuyang immediately shielded Qiao Xi behind him and fired a series of ice arrows.

"Whoosh! Whoosh!"

The zombie was able to dodge quickly; only one arrow grazed its head, taking away some of its withered hair.

Lu Yuyang realized the situation was very tricky, so he immediately turned to her and said, "I came in from the second floor, and we can leave from there too. I'll cover you, and you hide yourself."

As they spoke, the ice arrow seized the opportunity to stab at the mentally-based zombie who was standing aside watching the show.

A blazing fireball suddenly struck them at that moment.

Josie shoved Lu Yuyang away and quickly turned into a pebble.

The fireball whistled past the stone surface, leaving charred marks on the wall.

In the blink of an eye, two more evolved zombies appeared below.

Unable to launch any further attacks, Lu Yuyang activated his special ability to form a massive ice shield in front of them.

Bang!

laugh!

Under the fierce attack of the evolved zombies, the ice shield gradually cracked.

Josie knew that if they didn't deal with that psychic zombie, he and Lu Yuyang would definitely lose their lives here.

So, gritting his teeth, he transformed into a piece of paper and floated behind the mutated zombie. Almost immediately, he transformed into human form and stabbed the zombie with a dagger.

But as he raised his hand, it was restrained by a force.

She watched helplessly as the zombie's rotting face loomed larger before her, its stench reeking on her skin...

The ice shield vanished instantly, and countless ice arrows shot towards the psychic zombie in front of Josie.

Pfft!

An ice arrow pierced the zombie's wrist, and the psychic zombie quickly retreated.

With Lu Yuyang no longer protected by the ice shield, a fireball struck him, and even though he tried his best to dodge, his arm was instantly torn open.

Josie quickly walked towards him and noticed that Lu Yuyang's expression was off.

"I can't move!"

As the earth spikes and fireballs flew toward them, Josie could only hold onto Lu Yuyang tightly to dodge them.

"There are mind-controlling zombies here, we need to get out of here quickly."

Fortunately, this psychic zombie wasn't strong enough to control them for long, otherwise they would already be dead.

In just a moment, Lu Yuyang regained his freedom and immediately used an ice shield to protect the two of them.

Just then, the sound of running came from upstairs again.

Before they could tell whether it was a human or an evolved zombie, a bolt of lightning struck down from the sky, hitting an evolved zombie at the second-floor stairwell.

Josie's tense expression relaxed when she saw the man in camouflage and military boots.
