Chapter 16 Regret

Xiao Han paused while chewing the egg, a hint of vigilance flashed in his eyes, and then he returned to his nonchalant look.

"Doctor? No." Xiao Han answered casually, "He died on the way here."

He put his fork down and wiped the corners of his mouth.

"That guy was unlucky. He was the chief surgeon of a military hospital with first-rate skills. When he was passing through the suburbs of S City, his tire burst. He went down to change the tire, but was bitten by a zombie hiding under the car."

Xiao Han's tone was understated, as if he was narrating a trivial matter.

"He got infected right away. All we had to do was—" he made a gun gesture, "finish him before he mutated."

Su Wan listened to this conversation and breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, it was okay.

Lu Shiyan gently put down his knife and fork, his eyes lingering on Xiao Han's face for a moment.

"Regret." He only said this one word, his voice was as cold as ice, but it made Su Wan's back chill.

His tone not only expressed regret for the innocent doctor who died, but also... regret for not being able to immediately verify the truth of her pregnancy.

"It's a pity indeed." Xiao Han continued, but glanced in Su Wan's direction, "But it's the end of the world, and no one can tell when it will be their turn."

He put his napkin down and stood up.

"Speaking of which, if Miss Su is really pregnant, she can't do without a doctor."

Su Wan felt Lu Shiyan's gaze directed at her, sharp as a knife.

"What a coincidence," Xiao Han continued, "I remember there seemed to be a private clinic near this area. The place is quite remote, so maybe it wasn't completely looted."

He stretched lazily as if nothing had happened.

"Should we organize a team to go check it out? Medicines and medical equipment are more valuable than gold nowadays. Maybe we can find a pregnancy test kit or something."

Xiao Han emphasized the last sentence, his eyes moving between Lu Shiyan and Su Wan.

Su Wan's fingers almost deformed the napkin. If she really found the pregnancy test stick, then she... Although she also suspected that she was pregnant, she didn't dare to gamble.

"No need." Lu Shiyan's voice sounded suddenly.

Su Wan looked up suddenly, unable to believe her ears.

"It's too dangerous and not cost-effective to go out now." Lu Shiyan said calmly, as if he was just discussing an ordinary strategic issue.

He stood up and looked down at Su Wan's pale face.

"Go back to your room and rest. Aunt Zhang will bring up some easily digestible food."

As she walked out, she couldn't help but wonder, what secrets were they going to tell her that they wanted to drive her away?

But on second thought, she found it funny. What did Lu Shiyan have to say that required him to avoid her?

He was the one who held her life and death in his hands. If he wanted her life, it would only take a word. There was no need to be sneaky.

Returning to the room, Su Wan immediately locked the door, leaned against it, and gasped. She felt like an acrobat walking on a tightrope, and could fall into the abyss at any time.

Why didn't Lu Shiyan seize the opportunity to expose her? Did he want to give her more time to prove herself? Or... did he have other plans?

Just as she was lost in thought, there was a slight knock on the door.

"Miss, please have some porridge." It was Aunt Zhang's voice.

Su Wan took a deep breath and opened the door. Aunt Zhang was holding a tray with a bowl of steaming white porridge and light pickles on it.

"Mr. Lu specifically told me that you have a poor appetite and need something light." Aunt Zhang's eyes were filled with obvious curiosity. "He also told you to have a good rest and to tell him if you feel uncomfortable at any time."

Su Wan took the tray, and her heart was in turmoil. Is Lu Shiyan... concerned about her? No, it's impossible. How could the man who wished she was dead care about her?

Putting down the tray, Su Wan walked to the window and looked out at the gloomy sky. In the distance, several hungry zombies were wandering along the wall, making creepy roars.

There is inescapable danger both inside and outside the house.

Su Wan stirred the porridge in the bowl with a spoon. The rising steam blurred her vision.

Why?

She put down the spoon and put her face in her hands. How could the man who wished her dead care about her?

It had only been two days since Lu Shiyan broke into her room. And the man who had sworn to kill her in front of her was now telling her to "have a good rest"?

This is so abnormal.

Suddenly, footsteps were heard outside the door. They were not the light steps of Zhang Ma, but steady and powerful male steps. Su Wan tensed up, staring at the door that could be opened at any time.

The footsteps stopped in front of her door, but there was no knock. Only a slight "click" was heard, as if something was placed on the ground.

The footsteps gradually faded away.

Su Wan waited for a full five minutes before carefully opening the door.

There was a cardboard box on the ground outside the door, containing several bottles of mineral water and some medicines - vitamins, calcium tablets, and... folic acid tablets?

Su Wan's hands began to tremble. These were obviously nutritional supplements prepared for pregnant women!

She quickly looked around and confirmed that no one was around, then picked up the cardboard box and went back to her room, locking the door. With trembling fingers, she picked up the folic acid bottle, which had the words "essential for pregnancy" printed on it.

Su Wan felt dizzy. Did Lu Shiyan... believe it?

No, it's not possible.

Su Wan shook her head. This was either Lu Shiyan's delaying tactic, or... he really believed the lie that she was pregnant, but only because of that "child" and not because of her.

She flipped out a piece of paper and thought seriously about her escape plan. The villa was surrounded by zombies, and escaping rashly would be tantamount to suicide. She had to wait for the opportunity, or... create the opportunity.

In the evening, the sky darkened completely, leaving only the occasional dark shadows and low roars passing by the wall outside the window.

There was a sharp feeling of emptiness in my stomach.

The light porridge at dinner had long been digested, and coupled with the tense nerves throughout the day and the physical recovery exercises done secretly, the feeling of hunger was particularly strong.

She pressed her lower abdomen, which was still flat.

The bottle of folic acid tablets was still on the bedside table, like a silent mockery.

Just then, there was a knock on the door, two knocks, neither light nor heavy.

Su Wan's heart skipped a beat and her body tensed instantly.

Who could it be? Aunt Zhang? Or...

"Come in."

Aunt Zhang pushed the door open and came in, holding dinner in her hand.

"Mr. Lu said you need a light diet, so I made chicken noodle soup." Aunt Zhang put down the tray and looked at the nutritional supplements on the table for a moment, with a hint of inquiry in her eyes, "Do you need me to help you open the folic acid bottle?"

"No need." Su Wan remained calm, "I can do it myself."

Aunt Zhang hesitated to speak.

"Anything else?"

"That is..." Aunt Zhang lowered her voice, "Are you really... pregnant with Mr. Lu's child?"
