Su Wan was awakened by an unusual noise. It was not the usual morning silence, but a kind of oppressive busyness. Footsteps, the friction of objects being dragged, whispered conversations, all the sounds were deliberately quiet, revealing a sense of caution.
Her stomach was so empty that she felt uneasy. She subconsciously pressed her belly. The aroma of food wafted in. It was the meal that Zhang Ma cooked. Millet porridge, white flour buns, a "state banquet" in the end times.
These days, she lived like a captive. She ate and slept all day, her morning sickness miraculously disappeared, and her appetite improved amazingly. She was happy to be free, temporarily shelved her mission to survive, and entered the "strategic lying down" mode.
Lu Shiyan was very busy, leaving early and returning late, with a cold body, and he went to the corner to wipe his cold dagger when he came back. She pretended to be asleep, listening to the sound of metal friction.
The only comfort was the supplies that always filled up the space without her noticing, and Lu Shiyan's silent "replenishment". Food, water, clothes, and even some tools she didn't recognize, piled up.
Three days passed in a flash.
News came that Xiao Han's fever had subsided. Not only that, he also awakened his wind-related abilities, and it was said that even the bullet wounds on his body healed rapidly.
The movement at this moment told Su Wan that something was about to happen.
She sat up, and the quilt slipped off. In the living room, a figure swayed.
Zhang Ma, Agui, Afu, and Xiao Han's remaining three men were all packing up their things, their movements were quick and their goals were clear. Several large backpacks were bulging against the door.
No one came to wake her up. No one told her the schedule for the day in advance.
She just had to wait. Wait until they packed up everything and got in the car.
Like a piece of luggage forgotten in a corner that you just remember to take with you.
My heart felt a little tight. Sure enough, it was just a pendant. A pendant that was properly kept, fed on time, and needed to be brought along at critical moments.
She lowered her head and looked at her wrist. It was empty, but there seemed to be an invisible chain, and the other end was held in someone's hand.
Aunt Zhang came over with a cup of warm water and placed it on the low cabinet next to her. Her movements were gentle. "Drink some water first. The car will be ready soon."
Where to? She didn't ask.
You probably won't get an answer even if you ask.
Or, the answer doesn’t matter.
She just had to follow. Follow the man who fed her, "replenished" her space, and gave her a temporary safe corner.
Su Wan just felt a breath stuck in her chest. Forget it, she was clearly arranged.
That's fine. No worries.
She picked up the water cup and drank slowly. The water was warm, soothing her empty stomach.
"Miss, you can have breakfast in the car later." Aunt Zhang's voice was calm, but the next words made Su Wan's hand holding the cup of water stop in mid-air. "The master has ordered not to disturb your rest. Everyone is waiting for you to wake up."
Wait for her to wake up? Su Wan's mind buzzed.
Waiting for her? Everyone? Just to wait for her to sleep until she wakes up naturally?
This is wrong. Very wrong.
She thought she was just delivering a parcel by the way, but now it seemed like it was one of those high-end parcels that needed to be specially marked “fragile, please handle with care, await instructions”?
Would Lu Shiyan be so kind? The way he looked at her before was clearly full of scrutiny and danger.
Was this some new trap? Was he deliberately giving her this kind of preferential treatment to make her let down her guard?
Or is it that the baby in her belly is more important than she imagined, important enough to make Lu Shiyan suspend the actions of the entire team?
Thoughts flashed through her mind, and she thought of the supplies piled up in the space, of Zhang Ma's care for her in the past few days, and of how Lu Shiyan, although indifferent, had never really hurt her. Then she looked at the people in front of her, all waiting quietly, without urging or dissatisfaction.
The blocked feeling in my heart suddenly changed.
That's a bit ridiculous.
There is also a subtle benefit.
It turns out that she is not just a simple pendant. She is also a high-level pendant that can stop the entire team from running. Okay. A high-level pendant is a high-level pendant.
She put down the cup, threw back the quilt and got out of bed. She had to live up to this "high-class" treatment.
The car door closed with a dull, heavy sound, and Su Wan sank into the soft leather seat.
Zhang Ma followed and sat down beside her. Almost at the same time, she produced a small folding table from nowhere and fixed it in place with a click. The smooth wooden tabletop looked like it had just been made.
A thought popped up in her mind: Could it be that Lu Shiyan did it himself? That was what he should do. After all, she was pregnant with his child.
The steaming breakfast was served one by one. The glutinous rice cakes exuded a sweet fragrance and were still warm from the pot.
Su Wan picked up a piece, it was warm to the touch, and took a bite. The glutinous rice was soft and sticky, and the meat filling in the middle was salty and fragrant. Hmm, this glutinous rice cake tastes really good today.
This is Zhang Aunt’s craftsmanship. It was made early in the morning and is still hot.
The driver's door opened and closed again. The car body sank slightly. Lu Shiyan got in without making any extra noise, and just started the engine. Before he started, his eyes swept across Su Wan's lower abdomen.
Just before the car started slowly, Lu Shiyan's deep voice came, without a trace of warmth, but clearly drilled into Su Wan's ears: "Hold on tight, this journey will not be peaceful."
Next came the co-pilot. Xiao Han got in.
For a moment, the only sounds in the car were the low engine running sound, Su Wan's light chewing sound, and the echo of Lu Shiyan's warning.
"Oh," Xiao Han said lazily, breaking the silence, "A pregnant woman still has such a good appetite."
His tone was a little teasing, but also had some other meaning. "We were delayed for more than two hours waiting for you."
He paused, as if to emphasize, "I am a patient, but I don't get the same preferential treatment as you."
Su Wan paused for a moment while holding the glutinous rice cake. She didn't look at Xiao Han or Lu Shiyan, but just stared at the cake in her hand and snorted softly, thinking about the deep meaning of Lu Shiyan's words "it won't be peaceful".
The journey today was safe and peaceful, not like the apocalypse. There were no screaming mutants, no sudden attackers, and even the scattered infected people wandering around were hard to find.
Su Wan's fingers curled up unconsciously. It was too smooth.
Xiao Han's voice was a bit teasing, breaking the silence in the car. He seemed to see through the doubts in Su Wan's heart. "Why, looking at the road conditions, do you feel that you are unlucky today?"
He raised his chin towards the front row. "This is all the result of your family's hard work."
Su Wan's fingers tightened unconsciously around the water bottle, and the bottle made a slight plastic twisting sound. "My man?" she repeated, with a hint of confusion in her voice.
Xiao Han chuckled as if he had heard something funny. "It's your husband, isn't it?" He said it as naturally as if he was saying that the weather was nice today.
The carriage instantly fell into a subtle silence.
Lu Shiyan's voice was smooth and every word was clear: "Don't talk nonsense."
"Tsk, you're denying it so quickly?" Xiao Han added, "Everyone saw it."
