Chapter 668 High Shelter

He knew that this sense of security might be short-lived and fragile, and that the danger outside could shatter this tranquility at any time. But in this moment, he allowed himself to immerse himself in this moment of peace and let his tense nerves relax a little.

His thoughts drifted in exhaustion, imagining that he could get a short rest in this corner, recover some strength, and accumulate strength for the unknown challenges in the future.

That sense of security was like a candlelight in the darkness. Although it was weak, it was enough to warm his heart that had experienced so many storms and give him the courage and hope to move forward.

However, life on the high ground was far from as smooth as Xiao Yi had imagined. When night fell quietly, darkness spread rapidly like thick ink, and a cold breath followed.

The cold night wind was like a vicious beast with sharp teeth, mercilessly penetrating his clothes and biting his skin. The chill seemed to penetrate his bones, making him shiver uncontrollably.

Xiao Yi gritted his teeth, trying to resist the biting cold, but his body trembled more violently. He knew that if he did not take measures, the cold would probably take away his body temperature without him knowing it, endangering his life.

So, he forced himself to look for something warm in the abandoned building, his eyes searching the darkness eagerly, not missing any possible corner.

Finally, he found some worn-out clothes in a room full of junk. Those clothes had long lost their original color, were covered with dust and stains, and even had some holes.

But at this moment, for Xiao Yi, these worn-out clothes were like a life-saving straw. He couldn't wait to hold them in his arms, feeling the remaining warmth.

Returning to his hiding place, Xiao Yi quickly wrapped himself in these clothes. Although they exuded an unpleasant smell and were rough and thin in texture, even if they only added a little bit of resistance, they also made him feel a little comfort in this cold night.

However, the cold wind still seeped in through the gaps in his clothes, waking him up from the cold from time to time. Every time he woke up, he could only curl up more tightly, praying for the early arrival of dawn to end this long and unbearable cold night.

In Xiao Yi's predicament on this high ground, the only thing that can keep him alive is the limited food and water stored in the space.

At every meal, he would very sparingly take out a tiny amount of food from his space. It might just be a few pieces of dry bread or a small pack of compressed biscuits. He chewed slowly, trying to make this scarce food stay in his mouth longer, to get that faint feeling of fullness.

Water was extremely precious. He only dared to take a small sip each time, letting the moist feeling spread in his mouth, and then swallowed it with difficulty to moisten his dry throat.

But he knew in his heart that the food and water in the space were decreasing at a visible rate, and such reliance could not last long.

He often sat in a corner, frowning, thinking hard about how to solve these problems. He considered leaving the highlands to look for new resources, but the unknown dangers outside discouraged him.

I also thought about trying to grow some crops myself on the highlands, but the poor land and harsh environment seemed destined to destroy this idea.

Xiao Yi's eyes occasionally fell on the increasingly empty corners of the space, and the anxiety in his heart was like a tangled mess, getting tighter and tighter. He knew that he had to find a sustainable way to survive as soon as possible, otherwise he would face an even more difficult and desperate situation.

At night, as the cold wind howled, Xiao Yi lay on the icy ground, his mind still pounding on how to escape the impending crisis of food and water, how to continue to survive in this cruel world. Xiao Yi stood firmly on the high ground, his posture upright but revealing an unconcealable fatigue. His eyes were as sharp as a hawk's, not missing any subtle details of the surrounding environment.

He squinted his eyes slightly to block out the strong sunlight. Sweat dripped down his cheeks, but he didn't bother to wipe it off, completely absorbed in observing his surroundings.

He first cast his gaze into the distance, where rolling mountain ranges stretched. Their peaks appeared majestic and imposing against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. However, his eyes did not linger on the beauty for long. Instead, they quickly scanned the contours of the mountains, watching for any unusual smoke or moving figures.

Then, his gaze slowly descended, towards the vast forest below the plateau. Lush trees intertwined, forming a sea of green. He carefully observed the edge of the woods, searching for signs of danger, such as broken branches or unusual footprints.

Then he turned to look at the ruins around him: the collapsed buildings, abandoned vehicles, and piles of rubble. He examined every corner, trying to find useful clues or hidden resources in this mess.

Xiao Yi's breathing was steady and long, as if he had become one with his surroundings. His ears were always perked up, listening for even the faintest sound of wind, birdsong, or other suspicious sounds. He stood there quietly, observing intently, not missing any details that might affect his survival.

In a remote corner of the high ground, Xiao Yi's eyes were suddenly attracted by a dilapidated house.

The house stood there alone, as if forgotten by the world. The erosion of time had left its exterior walls mottled and the original color had long since faded, leaving only a gray and vicissitudes of life.

The door of the house was half-open, as if telling Xiao Yi a story of the past. The door was already rotten, with cracks and holes from insects on the door panel, and the door hinges made a creaking sound, as if protesting against being disturbed.
