In every difficult moment, their words of encouragement became each other's motivation to move forward. The girl smiled more and more, and Xiao Yi's eyes became more and more determined. They knew that as long as they relied on each other, there would be no difficulties that could not be overcome.
Xiao Yi was thinking about taking the woman back to the base. His brows were furrowed, and his eyes revealed deep thought. Along the way, his brain kept working, with various thoughts and worries intertwined.
He knew that the base was the last safe haven and the only hope for survival for this group of survivors. There were fortifications they had painstakingly built, precious supplies stored, and partners who fought side by side and trusted each other.
"Although I've decided to help her temporarily, the safety of the base is of paramount importance." Xiao Yi muttered to himself, slowing down his pace slightly. He weighed the pros and cons in his mind. On the one hand, he couldn't ignore the poor girl in front of him; her plight filled him with sympathy. On the other hand, the rules and safety of the base could not be compromised. He couldn't bring potential threats to everyone because of a momentary sympathy.
Xiao Yi recalled the various regulations of the base and the crises he had encountered in the past. The blood and sweat he had shed to defend the base made him dare not be careless in the slightest. "Who is she? Could she be a spy sent by the enemy?" Such questions kept emerging in his mind.
He tried hard to recall every moment he had spent with the girl, trying to find clues in her words and actions to determine whether she was trustworthy. However, the girl's eyes, filled with fear and helplessness, made him hesitate and reluctant.
"I can't easily let someone I don't know enter." Xiao Yi gritted his teeth and made up his mind. He knew that this decision might disappoint the girl or even make her despair, but for the sake of everyone in the base, he had to act cautiously.
"We are going to my base, but before that, you have to tell me the truth about something." Xiao Yi looked at the woman sharply. His eyes were like two sharp swords, piercing straight into the woman, as if to penetrate her soul and find the most real answer.
Xiao Yi's expression was serious and solemn, and his tightly pursed lips revealed his determination. His body leaned forward slightly, and an invisible sense of oppression came over him.
"I must ensure the safety of the base and not let any potential dangers in. So, where are you from? Why were you kidnapped by mercenaries? Also, what is your true identity?" Xiao Yi's voice was low and powerful, and every word was clearly heard by the woman.
His eyes never left the woman's face, not missing any of her subtle changes in expression. Xiao Yi's breathing was slightly rapid, showing his inner tension and caution.
At this moment, the air around them seemed to freeze, with only Xiao Yi's questioning voice echoing in the silence. The woman was intimidated by his gaze and momentum, and she lowered her head involuntarily, her hands tightly clasped together.
The woman looked bewildered. "What do you mean? What could I possibly be hiding from you?" Her eyes widened, a look of innocence and confusion. Her brows furrowed slightly, her facial muscles tense with tension.
Xiao Yi sneered: "For example, your true identity, why were you caught by mercenaries?" There was a hint of suspicion and distrust in his sneer, and his eyes were still fixed on the woman, as if he wanted to find a flaw in her expression.
The woman bit her lip and began to recount how she had been discovered and abducted by mercenaries while out foraging for food. Her voice trembled, tinged with deep fear and pain. "That day, I simply left camp to find something to eat, as usual." The woman's eyes grew hollow, as if she had been transported back to that terrible moment. "I walked carefully, trying not to make any noise, but they still found me." Her hands clenched unconsciously, her knuckles turning white from the strain.
"They rushed out suddenly and surrounded me. I had no time to escape, and I had no ability to resist at all." The woman's eyes were filled with tears, and her voice became choked with sobs. "I begged them desperately to let me go, but they ignored me and took me away like an animal."
The woman sniffed and continued, "Since then, I have been locked up by them, not knowing what will happen to me. It was not until I met you that I saw a glimmer of hope." She raised her head and looked at Xiao Yi with pleading eyes, hoping that he could believe in her.
Xiao Yi listened to her story, remaining calm and composed on the surface. His face was like a stone sculpture, without a single change of expression. Only his slightly narrowed eyes showed that he was listening intently. However, deep down, he was still full of doubts.
His mind raced, analyzing every detail of the woman's story, trying to find any flaws. Although the woman's tone was filled with fear and helplessness, and her description seemed very real, Xiao Yi didn't dare to let down his guard easily.
He deliberately changed his route midway, and instead of turning left at the fork in the road, he suddenly chose to turn right. His eyes seemed to casually glance at the woman, but in fact he was carefully observing her every subtle reaction.
At first, the woman didn't notice the change in route, still immersed in her own memories and narration. But when they passed a section of scenery that was clearly different from the previous one, the woman's words paused briefly, and a subtle panic flashed in her eyes.
Xiao Yi caught the change at this moment, and his suspicion deepened. But he did not show it immediately, but continued to move forward calmly, waiting for the woman to show further.
