Chapter 686: A Life-threatening Disguise

He quickly treated the woman's wound, and with trembling hands he dug out first aid supplies from his backpack. Xiao Yi's eyes were filled with concern, and his gaze was fixed on the woman's wound, as if everything in the world no longer mattered.

He first carefully wiped the blood around the wound with disinfectant, and every movement was as gentle as if he was protecting a rare treasure. Xiao Yi frowned, and fine beads of sweat oozed from his forehead, but he didn't bother to wipe it off.

Then, he picked up a clean gauze and covered the wound little by little, pressing gently with his fingers, afraid to hurt the woman. His eyes were focused and serious, full of anxiety and worry, and he kept whispering to the woman, "Be patient, it will be better soon."

While treating the wound, Xiao Yi's breathing became cautious, as if he was afraid of disturbing the woman's pain. He raised his eyes from time to time to observe the woman's expression. As long as there was a trace of pain on her face, his movements would become more gentle.

When the wound was finally bandaged, Xiao Yi breathed a sigh of relief, but the concern in his eyes did not diminish at all. He gently stroked the woman's hair and said in a gentle voice: "Don't worry, you will be fine."

"Why are you doing this?" Xiao Yi asked. There was a hint of urgency and confusion in his voice, and his eyes were fixed on the woman, full of complicated emotions.

The woman smiled weakly: "I don't want to owe you a favor." Her voice was as light as falling feathers, and every word seemed to be spoken with all her strength.

Xiao Yi's brows furrowed even more. He looked at the woman's pale face, and his doubts grew stronger. "Just because you don't want to owe someone a favor? That's too simple a reason." Xiao Yi's tone was filled with a hint of disbelief.

The woman closed her eyes slightly, took a deep breath, and then slowly said: "From the moment you saved me, I knew that you were a good person. I don't want to hide behind you all the time, being protected by you, but doing nothing." Her voice was weak, but firm.

Xiao Yi was silent for a moment, and a trace of emotion flashed in his eyes: "But it's too risky for you to do this. You may lose your life."

The woman raised her hand with great effort, wanting to wave it, but then it fell down helplessly. "If it weren't for you, I would have died long ago. Even if I really die this time, at least I have repaid you."

Xiao Yi's eyes were slightly red, he bit his lip and said, "Don't talk nonsense, you will be fine."

The woman nodded gently, with that weak but warm smile still on her face, as if telling Xiao Yi that she did not regret her decision. Although the woman's bravery and sacrifice made Xiao Yi's heart waver, the vigilance he had developed in the apocalypse for a long time made him unable to let down his guard easily.

Xiao Yi's gaze lingered on the woman's pale face for a long time. The tenderness and trust that had just emerged in his heart were quickly suppressed by the past experiences that kept emerging in his mind. He remembered the betrayals and traps he had suffered because of his credulity. Those painful lessons were like scars engraved in his heart, constantly reminding him not to relax easily.

The woman's disregard for her own safety really shocked him, but Xiao Yi knew that in this end-times full of fraud and danger, appearances are often deceiving. There was a struggle in his eyes. On the one hand, he was moved and admired by the woman's brave behavior, and on the other hand, he was deeply afraid of the unknown risks.

Xiao Yi's fingers unconsciously rubbed the weapon in his hand, as if the cold touch could keep him awake and alert. His heartbeat was still rapid, not only because of the fierce battle just now, but also because of the entanglement and contradiction in his heart.

He repeatedly warned himself in his heart not to be swayed by momentary emotions. Even though the woman in front of him seemed so sincere and fearless, he could not rule out the possibility that all this was a carefully planned scam.

Xiao Yi's brows were furrowed, forming a deep furrow. His eyes moved away from the woman from time to time, scanning the surrounding environment, as if he was always on guard against new threats that might arise.

At night, when the woman fell into a deep sleep from exhaustion, Xiao Yi still couldn't fall asleep. He sat by the campfire, staring blankly at the dancing flames, his mind constantly replaying every detail since he met the woman. He pondered every detail over and over again, trying to find any hidden conspiracy.

Xiao Yi knew that in this apocalypse, a single negligence could lead to fatal consequences. He couldn't easily abandon the vigilance he had relied on for years just because of a woman's bravery, even if it made him appear cold and ruthless.

He knew that in this cruel world, a moment of kindness and bravery was not enough to prove a person's true intentions.

Xiao Yi's eyes became deep and solemn, as if his pupils reflected all the darkness and cunning of the world. He recalled the betrayals and deceptions he had encountered, and the hideous expressions of those seemingly friendly faces at critical moments left him with lingering fears.

In this world, people do whatever it takes to survive. Kindness may just be a disguise, and bravery may be a performance to achieve some ulterior motive. Xiao Yi gritted his teeth, his thoughts intertwined like a tangled mess.

He thought of those who, in times of crisis, used kindness as a guise to gain the trust of others, only to stab them in the back. Their smiles, once full of warmth, turned into deadly poison in the blink of an eye.

There are also those who, under the guise of bravery, attract others to follow them, but ultimately push their companions into the abyss just to save their own lives. Their heroic deeds are nothing but carefully woven lies.
