Chapter 687 Pretending to Trust

The woman's face also showed a hint of relaxation, but more of confusion and uncertainty about the future.

The walls of the base were tall and solid, casting long shadows in the afterglow of the setting sun. The guards at the gate showed surprise on their faces when they saw Xiao Yi return, but when their eyes fell on the woman, they were full of vigilance and doubt.

Xiao Yi led the woman through the gate. The road beneath their feet felt both familiar and strange. The surrounding buildings were scattered and orderly, with busy people bustling about. The air was filled with a familiar atmosphere, but the presence of the woman gave it a strange feel.

Along the way, familiar faces kept casting curious glances at them, and whispers of discussion echoed behind them. Xiao Yi straightened his back, trying to remain calm, while the woman unconsciously moved closer to Xiao Yi, as if seeking some invisible protection.

Finally, they arrived at Xiao Yi's residence. The moment the door closed, they both breathed a sigh of relief. But they both knew that the real test had just begun.

Everyone at the base was curious about the strange woman Xiao Yi brought back, but Xiao Yi just gave a brief introduction and did not mention much about the woman's origins.

The moment Xiao Yi and the woman stepped into the base, the originally busy and orderly scene suddenly rippled. People stopped what they were doing and their eyes were all focused on them, especially the strange woman.

Curious eyes roamed over the woman, and whispers rustled like the wind through a wheat field. Some whispered to each other, speculating about the woman's identity and her relationship with Xiao Yi; others looked puzzled, their brows slightly furrowed, trying to find the answer from Xiao Yi's expression.

However, facing everyone's curious gazes and eager inquiries, Xiao Yi just stood there calmly. He cleared his throat and simply said, "This is the person I brought back, her name is Lin Yue." Then he said no more. The brief introduction made everyone's curiosity even stronger.

Someone couldn't help but ask: "Xiao Yi, where did she come from? Why is she with you?" Xiao Yi's eyes swept over the man and responded lightly: "You will know later." There was a hint of unquestionable determination in his tone, which made those who wanted to continue asking questions swallow back the words on their lips.

Although everyone's hearts were filled with countless questions and speculations, Xiao Yi's tightly closed lips and firm attitude made them understand that further questioning would not yield any more answers. So, with their hearts full of curiosity and doubts, people could only temporarily turn their eyes away from the woman and continue with their work, but private discussions and speculations quietly spread throughout every corner of the base.

The woman behaved very well and friendly. Although Xiao Yi still had doubts in his heart, he expressed his trust in her on the surface.

Every move she made was filled with gentleness and deference. Her smile was like the spring sun, warm but not blinding. Whenever she met anyone at the base, she would nod slightly and whisper a gentle greeting. Her voice was soft and sweet, like a spring breeze.

Whether helping distribute supplies or tidying up the mess, the woman did her best without complaint. Her eyes were clear and sincere, making it hard to dislike her.

Xiao Yi observed all this silently, but the doubts in his heart lingered like a shadow. He recalled the various experiences he had with the woman since he met her. Those inexplicable coincidences and the mysterious expressions she occasionally revealed made it difficult for him to completely let down his guard.

However, every time he saw the woman's eyes full of expectation and dependence, Xiao Yi felt that he might be too suspicious. He kept reminding himself in his heart that he could not easily deny a person's sincerity because of the shadow of the past.

So, in front of everyone, Xiao Yi tried hard to squeeze out a smile, affirming and praising the woman's performance. His words were full of encouragement and support, as if he really trusted the woman without reservation.

But only Xiao Yi himself knew that beneath that seemingly calm appearance, his heart was still wavering between vigilance and trust, waiting for time to prove everything.

At the same time, there was jubilation in the laboratory of the base.

Under the bright lights, the researchers' faces were filled with excitement. They cheered and hugged each other, their voices echoing in every corner of the laboratory.

On the lab bench, the newly achieved research results were displayed. This was the dawn of victory after their days and nights of hard work, countless attempts and failures. The instruments and equipment flashed with light, and the data charts danced happily on the screen, as if celebrating this moment.

Some people excitedly waved their reports and read out the key data and conclusions aloud, their voices trembling with excitement. Others gathered around, their eyes fixed on the reports, occasionally exclaiming in amazement and cheering.

In the corner, several young researchers were so excited that they burst into tears. They had put in so much effort and hard work for this project, and the success at this moment made them feel that it was all worth it.

An elderly scientist, usually serious and composed, couldn't help but smile with satisfaction. He patted the young man on the shoulder and showered him with praise and encouragement.

The entire laboratory was filled with a joyful atmosphere, with laughter and cheers mingling like a melody of victory. Amidst this jubilation, they saw hope for the future and were inspired to further develop the base.

After a long period of hard work and countless experiments, researchers finally succeeded in developing rice seeds that can be grown in a doomsday environment.

In that dim and cramped laboratory, researchers toiled day after day, their eyes bloodshot and faces etched with fatigue, yet a fire of determination burned in their gazes.
