He knelt on the ground, his hands tightly grasping the dirt, and burst into tears. His cries echoed throughout the empty base, a pain that penetrated deep into his bones, a deep regret for the loss of his homeland, and a fear and uncertainty about the future. Those around him, hearing his cries, couldn't help but weep too, and the entire base was shrouded in a blanket of sorrow.
Despair spread through the crowd like a plague. Helplessness and fear filled every face, a deep, unspeakable despair. At first, only one or two eyes dimmed, their heads lowered, shoulders slumped, as if crushed by an invisible burden. Then, like wildfire caught in a raging wind, the emotion spread like wildfire. People began whispering to each other, their voices filled with trembling and desperate cries. Their words were like sharp daggers, piercing each other's hearts. "What should we do?" "There's no hope..." These words echoed through the crowd. Children clung to their parents' arms, crying, their clear eyes devoid of their former innocence, replaced by a fear of the unknown. The elderly sat by, blankly staring, reminiscing about good times, but now, those memories seemed to fade with the spread of despair. The once united crowd began to disarray. Some roared in anger, others collapsed to the ground, and still others ran blindly around, trying to find a way out that didn't exist. Despair had made them lose their minds, forgetting their former courage and perseverance. This despair continued to ferment and swell, as if to swallow everyone into an endless abyss of darkness, leaving them no chance of glimmering hope.
Without the protection of the base, the future became bleak, and the hope of survival was slim. Once, the base had been their haven, a sturdy fortress against the dangers of the outside world. But now, all that was gone. They were exposed to the fury of nature, without solid walls to block the fierce winds or a stable roof to shield them from the torrential rain. Every gust of wind brought a biting chill that made them shiver; every drop of rain stung their skin like an icy arrowhead. Food supplies were rapidly dwindling. Without the base's warehouses, the limited resources could not be properly stored, eroding them and preying on wild animals. Water was also becoming scarce. The once-convenient water supply system was gone, forcing them to search for clean water, a difficult task in this desolate land. Disease began to spread among the people. Without medical facilities and medicine, even a minor infection could be fatal. Their bodies were weakening, and they had no way to recover. The surroundings are filled with unknown dangers, and every step carries the risk of a trap. Without the familiar paths and defensive fortifications of their base, they are like blind men groping in the dark, facing imminent doom at any moment. Every day ahead feels like a nightmare, the endless darkness suffocating them. Every morning they wake to an even more daunting challenge, and every night they fall asleep, uncertain whether they will be able to open their eyes again the next day. The hope of survival, atop these ruins, flickers like a candle in the wind, faint and shaky.
"What should we do?" These trembling, bewildered words echoed through the crowd. Helpless eyes were everywhere, each filled with deep confusion and fear. The children's eyes widened, their once clear and innocent gazes now lost in bewilderment. They clutched the hems of the adults' clothes, as if they were their only support in this chaotic world. Tears streamed down their tender cheeks, but they dared not cry out loud, simply gazing around with terror. The adults' eyes were equally filled with helplessness, their brows furrowed, their gazes wandering. Some gazed at the ruins of what had once been the base, their eyes filled with nostalgia for a past stable life and disbelief at their current predicament. Others gazed into the distance, as if hoping for a miracle, a glimmer of hope, but their gazes ultimately dimmed, as they saw only endless desolation and uncertainty. The elderly's cloudy eyes betrayed a deep despair, the wrinkles carved by time now even more profound. They stood trembling, their hands trembling constantly. Their helpless eyes seemed to tell that they had already experienced too much suffering, but they had never expected to face such a desperate situation at the end of their lives. No matter where they looked, those helpless eyes were heartbreaking. They intertwined, forming a web of despair that tightly engulfed everyone, making it impossible to escape and unable to see the future.
The people faced a difficult decision: to stay in the ruins and attempt repairs, or to leave and find a new home. Staying in the ruins meant facing enormous challenges and uncertainties. Everything within the ruins was in tatters, and the materials needed for repairs were extremely scarce, with most tools destroyed in the disaster. Cleaning every brick and stone, re-erecting every beam and pillar, required immense effort and painstaking labor. Furthermore, there was no guarantee that natural disasters wouldn't strike again during the restoration process, potentially wiping out all previous efforts in an instant. Yet, this was familiar land, a place brimming with memories and emotional bonds. They knew every inch of it intimately, a place that held their past and their dreams. Choosing to stay was a commitment, a deep attachment to their homeland, and a reluctance to leave. Leaving to find a new home was equally fraught with uncertainty and risk. The road ahead was shrouded in fog. They didn't know what kind of terrain and climate they would encounter, nor did they know whether a new place would truly offer them safety and stability. Along the way, they could face threats from hunger, disease, and wild animals, or even lose their way, never finding a suitable habitat. People gathered, engaged in a heated discussion. Some advocated staying, their voices firm and resolute, convinced that with a united effort, they could rebuild their homes. Others leaned toward leaving, their eyes revealing a longing for the unknown and an anticipation for new hope. Everyone weighed the pros and cons, their hearts filled with conflict and struggle. Children clung to their parents, their innocent eyes betraying worry about the future. The elderly sat silently by, reminiscing about the good old days, their eyes alternately firm and confused, unsure of what to do. In these difficult times, every decision was a matter of life and death, the future of the entire community. Anxiety and unease were written across everyone's faces, knowing full well that once this decision was made, there would be no turning back.
