Some people's bodies began to undergo terrifying changes. At first, subtle and imperceptible, they quickly became overt and heartbreaking. Their fingers and toes, as if filled with an invisible gas, gradually swelled. Then came their limbs. Their once-normal arms and legs grew thick and clumsy, their skin stretched to a sheen, as if ready to burst. Their faces were not spared either, their cheeks swollen and rounded like balloons. Their eyes were squeezed to a mere slit, their once distinct features blurred and unrecognizable. As their bodies swelled, their movements became incredibly slow. Movements that had once been effortless became incredibly difficult. Every step felt heavy and labored, as if their legs were being weighed down by lead weights. Lifting an arm to pick up an object required immense strength, a slow, labored process, and constant trembling. Turning around, their entire bodies felt clumsy, their former flexibility and agility gone. Those who once could run and leap swiftly now found even walking a challenge. Every few steps, they had to stop and gasp for air, their foreheads covered in beads of sweat. Worse still, the swelling not only impaired their mobility but also brought them endless pain. Every inch of their skin was stretched to its limit, their muscles and bones were under immense pressure, and the pain was a constant constant torment.
Xiao Yi himself was caught up in this terrifying predicament. Initially, he felt only a slight discomfort, like a faint current coursing through his body, but the sensation quickly grew stronger and impossible to ignore. The inexplicable force, like a wild beast out of control, tore through his meridians. Wherever it passed, a sharp, stabbing pain ripped through his internal organs, as if countless needles were simultaneously piercing his body. Xiao Yi could clearly feel the force surge from his abdomen, rising like a surging tide. As it passed through his chest, his breathing became rapid and labored, each breath akin to swallowing fire. Then, the force surged towards his head, threatening to explode. Brilliant flashes of light filled his vision, accompanied by a wave of dizziness that left him almost unsteady. Sometimes, the force would gather in his limbs, straining his muscles to the point of clenching, as if they were being torn apart. Xiao Yi curled up in agony, clutching his hands tightly, trying to suppress the raging force, but to no avail. Every time this power surged, he groaned in agony, the sound squeezed out from between his teeth, filled with endless torment and despair. Sweat rolled down his forehead like a waterfall, soaking his clothes. His face was as pale as paper, his eyes were bloodshot, and he seemed to be struggling on the edge of hell. This pain not only tortured his body, but also destroyed his spirit. Xiao Yi didn't know how much longer he could endure it, and he didn't know where this mysterious power would eventually lead him.
From the moment symptoms first appeared, the doctors at the base were locked in a relentless battle. They hurried between wards, their steps heavy with anxiety. The small infirmary was packed with patients, their moans of pain and cries of anxiety intertwined in a chaotic cacophony. The doctors' white coats swayed in the crowd, their foreheads beaded with sweat, yet they didn't bother to wipe them. A senior doctor, holding a medical record, scanned the lines rapidly, constantly asking his assistant for the latest test results. His eyes betrayed fatigue and worry, yet he forced himself to find a clue among the complex symptoms. Another young doctor, nervously examining a patient, gently pressed her fingers on the swollen area, carefully observing the skin changes, and softly inquiring about the patient's feelings. But no matter how carefully and attentively she applied her force, she could not reach a clear diagnosis. Other doctors sat in a group, intensely discussing the patient's condition, their desks piled high with medical documents and test reports. They raced against time to exchange their ideas and thoughts, attempting to develop an effective treatment plan. However, each proposed solution was rejected upon further research and discussion. Despite exhausting their knowledge and experience, trying every conventional treatment, and utilizing every available medication and medical device at the base, the doctors remained helpless against these bizarre symptoms. Each treatment attempt failed, leaving them feeling incredibly frustrated and helpless. Watching their patients' conditions worsen, the doctors were distraught, yet they could only watch helplessly, the feeling of powerlessness piercing their hearts. Amidst the busyness, they felt hopeless, exhausted and lost, unsure how to save these suffering people, or how to break this terrifying impasse.
Panic spread like a plague through the crowd. The mobile base, already rife with anxiety and unease, was now enveloped in a haze of dread. The people's eyes lost their former resolve and hope, replaced by a deep sense of fear and helplessness. Their voices trembled, their words filled with the dread of the unknown. Children clung to their parents' arms, trembling, their eyes filled with tears of fear. The adults, pale and bewildered, didn't know how to face this sudden disaster. Panic, like wildfire, instantly ignited everyone's deepest anxieties. Once harmonious neighborhood relations were now strained and filled with suspicion. Everyone began to suspect the mutated marine creatures were to blame. Recalling the memory of consuming those strange, glowing creatures, they were filled with regret and fear. Some angrily blamed the individuals who had decided to consume these creatures, their voices filled with despair and anger: "It's because of eating those things that we're suffering retribution!" Others, consumed by self-blame, muttered to themselves, "It's all my fault. For the sake of a momentary satiate, I've harmed everyone." A sense of despair permeated the crowd, as everyone speculated about what even more horrific events would unfold next. Some even imagined themselves becoming like the seriously ill, their bodies swollen and covered in strange markings. Fear blinded them, and arguments and complaints erupted. The entire base was in chaos, as if the end had already arrived.
