Chapter 818: Fighting Together 25

At the outset of their escape, Xiao Yi's face was grim, his teeth clenched as he led his squad through the desolate ruins, running with all his might. Every step raised clouds of dust, as if roaring an unyielding rage against the cruel world. Their figures seemed so small yet so resolute amidst the devastation. Xiao Yi's eyes, bloodshot, revealed a resolute and determined spirit. He glanced back repeatedly. Behind him, thick smoke billowed, spreading like the claws of a demon, obscuring half the sky. The thick black smoke seemed to engulf them, plunging them into endless darkness. And behind it, a looming threat loomed like a shadow. It was an indescribable fear—perhaps pursued by the enemy, perhaps an unknown disaster—but the oppressive feeling of oppression enveloped each of them. With each approaching footstep, their hearts beat faster, their breathing quickened. Xiao Yi shouted, cheering his squad members on, sweat dripping down his cheeks onto the parched earth. Their clothes were already soaked with sweat and clung tightly to their bodies, but no one had the slightest intention of stopping, because they knew that if they stopped, they would be plunged into an abyss of no return.

They had spent days on the endless flight, without a moment's sleep, without a single respite. Each of their eyes was bloodshot, their former brilliance long gone, only a deep sense of exhaustion and pain. The bloodshot threads crisscrossed like a spider's web, revealing the limits of their physical and mental endurance. Yet, even so, the will to survive burned like a blazing fire within them, daring them not to slack off even for a moment. Every time their heavy eyelids threatened to close, the urge to live was like a powerful force, forcibly pulling them back from the brink of sleep. They knew that if they relaxed their vigilance, if they succumbed to exhaustion, a merciless death awaited them. So, even though their steps seemed unsteady, even though their minds were groggy, they gritted their teeth and pressed on. Every step they took was a desperate battle against death. Their resolute gazes revealed only a determination to survive, without a single thought of retreat or surrender.

Xiao Yi, the always resolute and courageous leader, now frowned, as if it were a puzzle that could never be solved. His furrowed brow formed a deep furrow, laden with endless sorrow and worry. His gaze was deep and solemn, staring straight ahead at the war-torn landscape. The worry weighed on him as heavily as the charred earth, nearly suffocating him. He recalled the vibrant, lush greenery, and laughter that once filled this place. Now, only ruins, silence, and desolation remained. The war had mercilessly devoured all beauty, leaving behind only despair and pain. Every bombed-out house, every fallen figure, pierced his heart like a sharp knife. He knew he held the life and death of his squad on his shoulders, and even more so, the mission of rebuilding hope. This responsibility weighed on him like a boulder, deepening his anxiety. However, even though the worries in his heart were as heavy as mountains and seas, Xiao Yi's eyes still flashed with an unyielding light. He secretly vowed to lead everyone out of this darkness and into a bright future.

As he raced forward, he frequently glanced back, his movements swift and agile, his eyes filled with concern and caution. Each glance back was like a crucial confirmation. His gaze, sharp as a hawk's, swept across every figure in the group. He carefully observed the team members' pace and their expressions, fearing that any one would fall behind or encounter an accident. Sometimes, he would slow down slightly, waiting for the team members who had fallen behind to catch up, giving them an encouraging look and a firm gesture. Only when he was sure that everyone was still closely following the group would he breathe a sigh of relief, then turn again and lead everyone forward. Each glance back was not only a manifestation of concern for the team members, but also a manifestation of responsibility. On this difficult escape, he knew that no one could be left behind. Every team member was a precious force, a part of the support that supported them towards hope.

"Everyone, keep pushing! As long as we get through this ruin, we'll have hope of finding safety!" Xiao Yi shouted with all his might. His voice echoed through the desolate ruins, carrying an unmistakable determination and urgency. Every word seemed to burst forth from the depths of his soul, brimming with strength and desire. Xiao Yi's throat grew hoarse from the prolonged shouting, but he paid no mind, continuing to roar with all his might. His face flushed crimson, and veins bulged in his forehead, a testament to his total devotion. His gaze fixed intently on each team member, filled with encouragement and anticipation. It was as if his cry could transform into an invisible force, infusing each of them, renewing strength in their weary legs and rekindling a spark of hope in their despairing hearts. Amidst the billowing smoke and the shattered walls, this cry resounded and resonated. Like a banner, it led everyone forward, striving towards the possible safety that lay ahead.

The team members gasped for air, each breath a heavy, labored strain like pulling on a worn-out bellows. Their chests heaved violently, as if they were about to puke their lungs and hearts out. Despite this, they dared not pause. Their feet felt heavy as if they were filled with lead, yet they mechanically moved forward, each step fraught with pain and struggle. However, during this incredibly difficult escape, Xiao Yi began to notice something unusual. His sharp gaze flickered around, his mind, once focused on leading the team forward, now shifted to a more vigilant tone. He noticed that the sound of the wind around them had taken on a strange, unnatural whistle, now laced with a faint, low hum, as if something unknown was watching them from the shadows. The distribution of the rubble and broken walls in the ruins seemed illogical, as if deliberately manipulated by some mysterious force. And then there were the shadows that occasionally flashed by in the distance, so fast they were hard to grasp, yet cast a shadow of unease in his heart. Xiao Yi frowned even tighter, and the worry in his heart grew heavier. He knew very well that behind these anomalies, there might be a greater crisis hidden.
