Chapter 819: Fighting Together 26

Just when they were about to feel despair, a team member shouted in surprise: "Captain, look here!" Xiao Yi quickly turned his head and saw that in the corner of a shabby bookshelf, they found some books about skin diseases. The covers of those books have yellowed, and the spines have signs of wear, but at this moment in their eyes, they are like precious treasures. Xiao Yi couldn't wait to pick up a book and read it quickly. At the same time, another team member found some simple testing tools in a drawer under the table. There were worn but usable microscopes, scattered glass slides, and some small sampling tools. These discoveries instantly ignited a glimmer of hope in their originally heavy mood, as if they had grabbed a life-saving straw in the dark. Xiao Yi took a deep breath, and his eyes revealed determination: "Maybe we can find the answer from here."

Back at the warehouse, Xiao Yi didn't even bother to rest; he immediately set to work checking the team members against their books and tools. He first found a relatively flat, clean surface and carefully spread out the precious books. The yellowed pages looked incredibly old in the firelight. He then neatly placed the testing tools he had just found nearby. Though simple and somewhat worn, they now held the hopes of everyone. Xiao Yi beckoned the team members to come forward one by one, his expression serious and focused. His eyes were no longer filled with anxiety, replaced by a steely determination. The first team member approached, nervously standing before Xiao Yi. Xiao Yi picked up the tools and, with gentle yet precise movements, began to take a sample. Beads of sweat beaded his forehead, but his movements remained unaffected. He examined the sample carefully, comparing it to the description and images in the book, his brow furrowed and then relaxed. The other team members waited anxiously, their eyes fixed on Xiao Yi. The warehouse was so quiet that only the crackling of the fire and the occasional flipping of a page could be heard. Xiao Yi was concentrating on the inspection, not missing any tiny details. He knew that this concerned the lives of every team member and the future of the entire team.

After intense and meticulous effort, Xiao Yi's forehead was covered in sweat, his eyes gleaming with fatigue yet still filled with a thirst for discovery. He repeatedly compared samples, consulted books, and combined his tools with numerous tests and analyses. Finally, he discovered that the scaly disease afflicting the team members appeared to be a new, unprecedented viral infection. However, this preliminary conclusion brought him little joy, but instead a deeper sense of heaviness. He had no idea of the virus's exact source. Was it from the outside world? Or was it spread by some mysterious creature? He had no idea. And there was no cure. The books contained no relevant information, and the simple tools available offered no clues. Xiao Yi felt a deep sense of powerlessness, as if he faced a bottomless black hole, with no guiding light to illuminate the way forward. Reluctantly, he flipped through the books again, hoping to find even a glimmer of information he had missed. But each search ended in disappointment, the blank pages mocking his incompetence. Xiao Yi gritted his teeth and swore in his heart that no matter how difficult it was, he would find the key to solve the mystery and save the lives of his team members.

"Is this another curse of the end of the world?" Xiao Yi murmured to himself. His voice was low and hoarse, like a sigh of despair squeezed out from the depths of his soul. His eyes wandered between the painful faces of the team members and those strange scales, his eyes full of confusion and helplessness. Xiao Yi's lips trembled slightly, and these words seemed to carry a thousand-pound weight, slamming heavily into his heart. He thought of the tragic scenes after the end of the world, the endless wars, the ruined homes, the lost lives... and now, this mysterious scale disease is like a new trick of the devil, forcing them into despair again. Xiao Yi frowned, his thoughts tangled like a tangled mess. In his heart, he repeatedly questioned this cruel world, why it brought them such a heavy blow again and again. Is it a punishment from God? Or a trick of fate? His voice echoed in the empty warehouse, but no answer was received. Only the heavy breathing of the team members and the occasional "crackling" sound of the campfire responded to his helplessness.

At that moment, the once quiet warehouse erupted in a piercing scream from a team member. The sound threatened to pierce the roof and pierce the heavens, instantly shattering the brief moment of peace and sending everyone's heart pounding. Xiao Yi turned to see the team member collapsed to the ground, his body trembling uncontrollably, his hands frantically scratching at the scales on his body. His face was twisted beyond recognition by agony, his eyes filled with fear and despair. As everyone gathered around him, cracks began to appear on his body, like shattered porcelain. Then, black pus and blood slowly oozed from the cracks, emitting a pungent, nauseating stench. It flowed down his body, forming a horrifying puddle on the ground. The team member's screams continued, his voice hoarse, yet it failed to alleviate the pain. Xiao Yi's face turned pale instantly. He stared at the horrific scene with wide eyes, his heart filled with helplessness and anger. The other team members were also frightened by this sudden situation and were at a loss as to what to do. The entire warehouse fell into chaos and panic.

Xiao Yi's heart sank at the pained screams, and without hesitation, he rushed to help. He quickly crouched down and tried to hold down the team member's flailing hands to prevent him from injuring himself further. However, the team member, in excruciating pain, unleashed incredible strength, and Xiao Yi's best efforts were unable to control him. Xiao Yi's heart was pounding, his eyes quickly scanning the team member's broken scales and the black pus and blood that continued to flow, his mind racing, thinking of a solution. He tried to wipe the pus and blood with a clean cloth, but the flow continued unabated. He searched for medicine he had brought with him, but found none that could help the situation. Xiao Yi's forehead was covered with sweat, which dripped down his cheeks and onto the ground. His eyes were filled with anxiety and helplessness. He was usually strong and decisive, but now he was helpless. He could only watch the team member struggle in agony, unable to alleviate his suffering. This feeling of powerlessness filled Xiao Yi with immense frustration and pain.
