Chapter 821: Fighting Together 28

On the bustling streets, the figures of police and firefighters stand out. Their expressions are stern, their gazes resolute, as they strive to maintain order. The police constantly direct traffic, channeling vehicles and crowds, ensuring smooth passage. Their voices are hoarse, but they still shout, reminding passersby and drivers to be safe. Firefighters are constantly on the lookout for potential fire hazards, inspecting surrounding facilities, and meticulously looking for any security loopholes. However, amidst this intense and hectic work, illness has quietly taken its toll. They are constantly exposed to the public, allowing the virus to penetrate any pore. Despite wearing masks and taking all necessary protective measures, they are still unable to resist the virus's attack. Some police officers suddenly feel unwell after their shifts, suffering from persistent high fevers. Some firefighters develop persistent coughs and fatigue while on duty. Even in the face of illness, they refuse to retreat. As long as their bodies can support them, they will remain steadfast in their posts, fighting the disease with a tenacious will, and contributing their strength to maintaining social order and security. They are fully aware of the heavy responsibility they shoulder, and even if they suffer from illness, they must protect this land and ensure the normal life of the people.

Throughout the city, panic and despair permeated every corner like a thick haze. The once bustling crowds on the bustling commercial streets had vanished, replaced by shuttered shops and deserted streets. The occasional pedestrian, also wearing a mask, hurried by, their eyes filled with anxiety and fear. They hurried, afraid to linger anywhere for even a second, as if every second they paused brought danger closer. At school, the playground, once brimming with laughter, was now silent. The empty desks and chairs in the classrooms spoke of the children's longing for school life and their fear of the unknown. Parents were consumed with anxiety, fearing their children's futures and uncertain when this disaster would end. Hospital entrances were crowded with anxious people, some worried about their sick loved ones, others terrified of being infected themselves. The mingling of sobs and sighs added to the heavy atmosphere. In residential communities, people gazed out windows at the world outside, filled with helplessness. Neighbors no longer engage in the cordial exchanges of the past; instead, they shut themselves in, bearing their inner torment in isolation. On public transportation, passengers remain silent, maintaining a measured distance from one another, their faces filled with uncertainty about the future and frustration with the present. In parks, once bustling amusement parks are now deserted, and the rustling of the trees in the wind is a city's lament. The entire city seems to have been paused, and every corner is filled with panic and despair, leaving people feeling incredibly depressed and weighed down.

That once ordinary, warm and harmonious family was now shrouded in a haze of gloom. Xiao Ming helplessly stood by his parents' bedside, tears blurring his eyes like a flood. He stared blankly at his parents in the hospital bed, his heart aching. His mother's once gentle face now looked so pale, and his father's once strong figure now looked so frail. Xiao Ming's hands clutched the bedsheets tightly, his knuckles turning white from the strain. "Dad, Mom, you must get better," Xiao Ming sobbed, his voice trembling and filled with pleading. Each word seemed squeezed from the depths of his shattered heart, filled with endless fear and hope. However, his parents had fallen into a deep coma, unable to respond to his heartbreaking calls. The room was eerily silent, only Xiao Ming's sobs echoing in the air. He desperately hoped for even a faint response, a gentle comfort from his parents, but all he received was a deathly silence. Xiao Ming felt as if he were trapped in a dark abyss, unable to find a glimmer of hope. His gaze darted back and forth between his parents' faces, trying to find a sign of improvement in their closed eyes and weak breathing. But every time he looked, his heart grew heavier. Xiao Ming stayed by the bedside, time seemingly frozen, his world crumbling in that moment, leaving only endless pain and deep helplessness.

Despair, like a vast, invisible net, enveloped the land tightly. The next day, the epidemic, like a wild beast out of control, grew in severity, wreaking havoc on the people's bodies and minds with ever greater recklessness. The streets were dead silent, the former bustle long gone. Most people seemed drained of all strength, utterly weakened. They lay in bed or slumped in chairs, their eyes hollow and their faces sallow. Their once-vigorous steps had become unsteady, and now even the ability to move had been completely lost. Raising a hand felt like a thousand pounds; standing up seemed an impossible luxury. Every breath felt labored, every subtle movement demanding immense energy. At home, the elderly leaned weakly against the wall, their eyes filled with a longing for life and a sense of helplessness at the current situation. Children, too, had lost their former liveliness, lying helplessly in their parents' arms, unable even to cry. At workplaces, the once bustling bustle had vanished, leaving only a silence and desolation. Those who once struggled to make ends meet now silently endure the torment of illness, despairing of the future. Hospital beds are already full, and the corridors are crammed with patients awaiting treatment. Doctors and nurses, despite their best efforts, feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of patients. The world seems plunged into endless darkness, and people struggle in despair, seemingly unable to find a way out.
