Xiao Yi dashed to the basement door and peered out through the crack. Amidst the distorted heat, he witnessed a horrifying scene: three enormous mutant lizards roaming around the gas station. Their scales shone metallically in the sunlight, and corrosive mucus dripped from their forked tongues.
"Damn it," he cursed under his breath, "it's a desert monitor. How did they get here?"
Lin Yuxuan had already set up her sniper rifle. Her movements were clean and sharp, and the wound on her leg was completely invisible. "These beasts chased us all the way. They are particularly sensitive to the smell of blood."
Only then did Xiao Yi notice the blood seeping from the bandage on her right leg. He quickly calculated in his mind: three giant lizards, each over two meters long, with skin as hard as iron. With their current equipment, a head-on confrontation would be impossible.
"Listen," he turned to Lin Yuxuan, "I know there's still some gasoline in the tank at the gas station. If we can blow it up, maybe we can take care of these guys."
Lin Yuxuan frowned: "That will cause more trouble."
"It's better than being torn to pieces by these guys." Xiao Yi took out a roll of wire and a simple detonation device from his backpack, "I'll set it up, you cover me."
"Are you crazy?" Lin Yuxuan grabbed his arm. "It's over 70 degrees outside. You'll be roasted!"
Xiao Yi gave a wry smile: "I have a heat-insulated suit, and..." He pointed to his backpack, "I also have a secret weapon."
Before Lin Yuxuan could object, he had already put on his heat-insulating suit and exited the basement through another exit. The heat wave instantly enveloped him, and even through the special suit, he could feel the pain of his skin being burned.

Suddenly, a gunshot pierced the silence. Xiao Yi saw a ball of blood burst out from the monitor lizard's head. It was Lin Yuxuan's sniper shot. But the shot was not fatal. Instead, it enraged the monitor lizard. It let out a piercing roar and rushed towards the gas station.
"Damn it!" Xiao Yi quickened his pace and rushed to the oil tank. Behind him, he heard the loud sound of a giant lizard hitting the wall, and the entire gas station was shaking. He heard Lin Yuxuan fire two more shots, followed by the sound of shattering glass.
The oil tank was right in front of him, but the second giant lizard blocked his way. Xiao Yi's heart beat to his throat. He could see the sharp teeth in the giant lizard's mouth, each of which flashed coldly like a dagger.
At this moment, he remembered the "secret weapon" in his backpack. It was a sound wave generator, originally used to drive away wild animals. Xiao Yi pressed the switch without hesitation, and a sharp sound wave spread out instantly.
The monitor lizard roared in pain. This frequency of sound waves was a fatal blow to their auditory system. Xiao Yi took the opportunity to bypass the monitor lizard and installed the detonator on the oil tank.
"Retreat!" he shouted into the intercom while pressing the detonation button.
The deafening roar of the explosion sent blazing flames soaring into the sky. Xiao Yi was knocked to the ground by the blast, his heat-insulating suit scorching. He struggled to his feet and saw three giant lizards struggling in the sea of fire, screaming miserably.
But before he could breathe a sigh of relief, a more terrifying fact came before his eyes: the flames of the explosion were particularly conspicuous in the vast Gobi Desert, which meant that more predators were heading here.
Xiao Yi stumbled back to the basement, the heat wave hitting him almost suffocated him. Lin Yuxuan was holding the unconscious Lin Xiaobei, her face even paler than before.
"We have to leave immediately," Xiao Yi said breathlessly, "the explosion will cause more trouble."
Lin Yuxuan nodded, but her right leg was obviously weak. Xiao Yi then noticed that her bandage was completely soaked with blood.
"I'll carry him," Xiao Yi took Lin Xiaobei without hesitation, "you hold my shoulders."
The three struggled to climb out of the basement. The scene outside was suffocating. The wreckage of the gas station was burning, and the air was filled with a pungent smell of burning. In the distance, dust billowed, and more dark shadows could be vaguely seen moving.
"Go west," Xiao Yi said, "I know an underground passage that can avoid them."
Lin Yuxuan suddenly grabbed his arm: "Wait, that metal box!"
Xiao Yi then remembered the box he had found before. He hesitated for a moment, but seeing Lin Yuxuan's determined eyes, he nodded.
"Two minutes," he said. "Two minutes at most."
They temporarily placed Lin Xiaobei in a shaded area. Xiao Yi and Lin Yuxuan rushed to the metal box. The lock of the box had been deformed by the high temperature. Xiao Yi pried open the lid with a military knife, and the contents inside made both of them gasp.
"This is..." Lin Yuxuan's voice trembled a little.
Several special rifles and several sealed metal cans were neatly placed in the box. Xiao Yi recognized the logo on it - this was the latest biological weapon developed by the military.
"No wonder those beasts are so persistent," Xiao Yi muttered, "They can smell the scent in these jars."
Suddenly, Lin Yuxuan raised her gun and said, "Get down!"
Xiao Yi instinctively fell to the ground, a bullet grazed his scalp and flew past. He rolled behind the bunker and saw several figures appear in the distance.
"It's the Predators," Lin Yuxuan gritted her teeth. "They've been hunting us."
Xiao Yi's heart sank. In this environment, humans were sometimes more dangerous than mutants. He quickly checked his newly acquired weapons and found that they were all fully ammunition.
