Chapter 838: Fighting Together 47

After a brief rest in the copper coin space, Xiao Yi and Lin Xue decided to continue searching for a safer place. The beasts outside had left, but the chaos on the streets was getting worse. News of the drug shortage spread throughout the city like a plague, and people began to resort to any means necessary to survive.

"We must be careful, any exposure could be fatal." Xiao Yi whispered to Lin Xue, with a hint of vigilance in his eyes.

Lin Xue nodded and tightened the knife in her hand. Although her movements seemed a little unfamiliar, her eyes revealed a determination.

The two walked along the abandoned streets, trying to avoid contact with anyone. However, just as they passed a dilapidated pharmacy, they suddenly heard a fierce quarrel coming from inside.

"These medicines are mine! I found them first!" A man's voice was filled with anger and despair.

"Bullshit! Whoever gets it first gets it!" Another voice was even more brutal, followed by the sound of fighting and objects breaking.

Xiao Yi's heartbeat quickened, and he quickly pulled Lin Xue aside and looked inside through the broken window. Inside the pharmacy, two men were fighting over a few boxes of medicine, their faces full of ferocity and madness.

"We can't stay here, it's too dangerous." Xiao Yi whispered, and was about to leave when he suddenly heard a scream from one of the men.

He looked back and saw that the man had been stabbed in the abdomen with a knife, and his clothes were instantly stained red with blood. However, he did not fall down, but instead grabbed the man's collar tightly and fought desperately for the boxes of medicine.

"These medicines...are my child's life..." There was despair in his voice, but in the end, he fell to the ground and never got up again.

Xiao Yi's heart sank. He knew that this was just the beginning. The shortage of medicine had made people lose their minds and even risk their lives.

"We have to go, quickly!" Xiao Yi urged Lin Xue in a low voice, pulling her out of the pharmacy quickly.

However, just as they turned a corner, they suddenly heard a burst of hurried footsteps behind them. Xiao Yi quickly turned around and found several ragged men running towards them, their eyes full of greed and madness.

"They have drugs! Catch them!" one of them shouted, with a hint of hysteria in his voice.

Xiao Yi's heartbeat quickened, and he quickly pulled Lin Xue to run. He knew that if he was caught by these people, the consequences would be disastrous.

"Enter the space!" Xiao Yi shouted in a low voice, silently reciting in his heart: "Enter the space."

The next second, they reappeared in the copper coin space. Lin Xue gasped, her eyes filled with fear and shock.

"Why...why are they like this?" Lin Xue asked in a low voice, with a hint of trembling in her voice.

Xiao Yi was silent for a moment, then whispered, "The shortage of medicine has caused people to lose their minds. In order to survive, they will not hesitate to hurt or even kill their own kind."

Lin Xue lowered her head, a trace of sadness flashed in her eyes: "We...what should we do?"

Xiao Yi did not answer, but listened carefully to the movement outside. Those people did not leave, but wandered around, as if looking for their traces.

"We can't stay here forever." Xiao Yi whispered, with a hint of urgency in his tone, "We must find a safer place and try to avoid contact with anyone."

Lin Xue nodded. Although her heart was filled with fear, she knew that now was not the time to retreat.

Xiao Yi quickly checked the supplies in the space, and after confirming that everything was safe, he whispered, "We have to wait until they leave before we act. But before that, we must be prepared."

Lin Xue didn't say much, but silently checked her equipment with determination in her eyes.

Xiao Yi's fingertips paused on the keyboard for 0.3 seconds.

On the Meteorological Bureau's circular monitoring screen, the normally regularly rotating radar echoes suddenly twisted into a strange spiral. He pulled up a real-time cloud map of the Western Pacific. Fourteen of the seventeen monitoring buoys were frantically flashing red alerts.

"80mm of precipitation per hour, tropopause height exceeding 1 meter..." He muttered the data on the screen, cold sweat dripping down the back of his neck. This wasn't the value of an ordinary rainstorm at all, it was more like...

"Energy released when the typhoon's eyewall is displaced." A hoarse voice came from behind him. Xiao Yi turned around and saw Lin Xiaoxia's pale face. The newly promoted meteorological analyst was holding a crumpled satellite fax paper in his hand. "But the problem is, there is no typhoon at all."

The central air conditioning vents whimpered. Xiao Yi slid his mouse to bring up a three-dimensional simulation. After the storm clouds formed in the Yellow Sea, they rushed straight towards Shanghai at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. According to this trajectory, at three in the morning, it would be—

"Urban canyon effect." The two said in unison. Xiao Yi's temples throbbed. The special wind tunnels formed by the ultra-high density of skyscrapers would cause heavy rain to have a terrifying superposition effect between the cracks in the buildings.

"We must activate the red alert immediately!" Lin Xiaoxia rushed to the duty director's office, her ponytail swirling in a blood-red arc under the illumination of the alarm lights. Xiao Yi, however, stared at the constantly jumping number in the lower right corner of the screen. It was the real-time load of the municipal drainage system—it had reached 92% of its design capacity.

He suddenly remembered the drunken boast of the municipal engineer during the inspection of the new subway line last week: "Drain pipes? Just connect them directly to the branch line of the old system. It won't be used at full capacity for decades anyway..."
